HOPE PLUS

PROPOSAL FOR
SERVICES
For Red Cross Grant Funds

Hope plus would like to take the time to thank Red Cross for considering Hope Plus as the
organization to receive the grant for disaster relief. Our goal is to help people and change lives.

INTRODUCTION

In the last decade, the world has seen some of the most devastating natural disasters on
record. These include Hurricane Katrina, Haiti earthquake, Pakistan floods, and more recently
hurricane Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Weve seen how badly they effect families and children.
Some countries have limited resources and are left with nothing. With finances low, and lack of
emergency organizations, the health and well-being of citizens are at risk. Kids are left with
nowhere to play and no environment to feel normal and be a kid. Families have trouble getting
back on their feet with limited supplies. Lack of awareness, discrimination, and finances all play
a role in this issue. We are proposing for our non-profit organization, Hope Plus, to step in and
use our services to benefit countries effected by natural disasters. Bringing supplies, first aid
training, and activities for kids will benefit families is the aftermath to try and get back on their
feet. Within the years weve seen the importance of assisting those in need. Not only will this
bring relief, but it will also bring awareness to the lack of aid.

Current Situation
In the United States alone, weve experienced 49 separate weather, flood, and climate
natural disasters. This is tied for 2nd for most natural disasters on record. Worldwide, natural
disasters kill around 90,000 people, and affect 160 million people worldwide (Rice, 2017).
Getting deeper into the issue, natural disasters do more than just kill. They leave families
hopeless and with nothing to live off of. Taking away homes, supplies, and having to get
back up on their own. In the aftermath of a natural disaster, the issue tends to fade away
and is forgotten. We have to think about all the children affected and how their lives have
now changed. These victims (especially children) are more at risk and have the least
schooling, lower nutritional status, and sparse financial reserves compared to national
averages when disaster strikes. These families and childrens conditions deteriorates
further with little mean to recover from these shocks. At this time, disaster risk reduction,
preparedness, and organizations are largely based on assumptions, and not focused on the
actual field based findings with who exactly these disasters effect and how. We need to
focus on the months and even years after a disaster.

1
More than 90% of natural disaster deaths occur in countries that are poor and under
developed (Rowling, 2016). They rely on help and assistance from other countries to help
their citizens. Most of these people are not aware, not prepared, and lack resources. Post
disaster-lives are changed, especially for children. Their lives have been shaken, and
changed. Many are forced out of their homes, having to start in new communities. Many
kids also suffer from PTSD, anxiety, and depression following the trauma of being displaced
by a natural disaster. Children have unique needs that are not being prepared for,
addressed, or followed up on.

Displacement Worldwide

As shown in the above chart, displacement is the major effect of natural disasters. These areas
hit are financially instable and cause further issues for the community. Hurricane Maria is a
recent event that proves the troubles and hardships in the months after a disaster. It has been
over a month since Hurricane Maria, and places like Puerto Rico are still dealing with the
effects. The situation starts to feel like a new way of life instead of a tragedy. With 3.4 million

2
people in Puerto Rico, about 35% of households are without drinking water (Sutter, 2017). This
issue with water leads to a high risk for diseases such as cholera. Much of Puerto Rico was also
left without power and is still now barely recovering. Outsiders are not able to comprehend the
entire culture has arisen around the catastrophe. Emotional trauma, economic disaster, along
with environmentally devastating. This place is no longer what people used to call home. The
biggest issue is the delay in organizations role in helping out. Citizens lives are at risk and are
being forced to survive in dangerous circumstances.

Hope Plus is an organization that will go above and beyond to insure success and relief for
victims. We have been established for a short amount of time, but bring to the table fresh ideas,
innovation, and most importantly, passion. Our goal is to be there as first response, and get
right to the core of issues right away. We want to provide supplies, first aid, and activities for
kids that will make the situation as positive as possible, and least traumatic as possible.

The earthquake in Haiti had major effects as you can see above. Notice how a huge percentage of those effected
were ages 10-19, with 80% living in poverty. These countries depend outside help/ resources.

Project Plan
Our project plan incorporates using innovation, urgent methods, and a highly responsive
approach to managing and helping victims. Following is a description of our project methods,
including how the project will be developed, and reasons for why we suggest developing the
project as described. These steps are followed within days of any natural disaster. Our team will
help any country, with any disaster; we will not turn anyone away. Depending on the disaster
and the impacts it had, we plan accordingly. Step 1 is done before our team heads to the
destination, in order to properly access the situation. This might vary, as we might get more
valuable information and observations while being at the actual location.

3
Step 1-Scoping
Phase 1 is used as a stage to obtain an understanding of the existing disaster and situation.
This enables the project team to refine the scope of the project and identify the main and urgent
issues at hand. Not every natural disaster is the same and the damage both emotionally and
physically can range extravagantly. Being detailed oriented, Hope Plus strives to make each
mission both efficient and catered to victims exact needs

Step2- Supplies
After assessing the situation at hand, we will gather and equip the supplies needed to give to
the victims. Hope Plus uses specific vendors for this step and assure the amounts are correct.
We will receive shipments to our given location.

Step 3- Warehouse
Hope Plus has come up with a concept of a Warehouse to store all of the supplies, activities,
and act as a safe haven for anyone in need. This simple idea will make it cost efficient,
weather protected, and provide an all-in-one experience to help as many people as possible.
Listed below are our main focus in terms of supplies:

Supplies Description

Textiles Clothing, blankets, towels, home supplies

Hygiene Deodorant, shampoo, soap, feminine products, toothbrush/toothpaste

First Aid Bandages, wraps, ointments, medicine

Step 3- Set Up
With all of our volunteers, Hope Plus can set up our warehouse efficiently and quickly, being
one of the first to respond to disasters. Not only do we set up fast, but we remain at the location
ready to help for a long period of time, long after the disaster has happened. This gives us a
high percentage help rate. Especially for our programs for kids, we hope to really change
childrens lives by getting to know them and watch them grow throughout the activities.

QUALIFICATIONS
Hope plus is continually proven to be an industry leader for disaster relief in following ways:

Hope Plus was established in 2017 with a main goal of simply helping people. Though a new
company with limited experienced, we are still the most qualified organization in terms of
ambition and innovation. We strongly believe in qualities such as unity, passion, and teamwork

4
as missions for our team. We are detail oriented and will go to various length to ensure these
victims are treated sufficiently and return to their lives as soon as possible. Though we werent
established as an organization, we had any of our team member involved in the aftermath of
Hurricane Matthew and their relief efforts. Many of our team members come from backgrounds
of education and dealing with families and kids. This is important due to our goal of focusing on
kids and helping them cope with disaster. We understand the effects and how families are left
without supplies for a long period of time. We also take into consideration all factors including
location and culture. The aspects that make us different are:
Innovative
Hands-On
Detail-Oriented
Research/ Close Up Experience

COST
Hope Plus is requesting the full offered grant amount of $100,000. This would be fully utilized for
travel, supply, and warehouse costs. We believe this investment will greatly benefit Red Cross
and their outlook on new and younger organizations. Advantages of choosing Hope Plus will:

Provide an innovative outlook to the Red Cross Organization

Will save lives, provide better quality of life
Give a new organization a chance to thrive
Open gateways for diverse and hands on opportunities
