Exclusive Interview with Prof. V. K.

CHAUHAN

Prof. V. K. CHAUHAN, a 1976 passed out of the Nehru College is a well-known face
amongst the Homeopaths. He did his Masters in Homoeopathy in Repertory from
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad, 2006.

A humble and sensitive Homoeopath with over 32 years of clinical and teaching
experience is really a boon for the clan. He has taught Anatomy and Practice of
Medicine all these years that simply means he had remained in touch with all
students of his college for maximum number of years.

He is one of the few senior Homeopaths who have really contributed to all
dimensions of Homeopathy in the Present arena. He had taught as Demonstrator,
Asstt. Professor, Professor and Principal.

He has served as a Principal Investigator of collaborative extra-mural research

project of Dept. of AYUSH, Govt. of India and Dilli Homoeopathic Anusandhan
Parishad, As an Examiner and paper setter for BHMS and MD Examinations for
number of Universities . He had been a member of Dilli Homoeopathic Anusandhan
Parishad, Govt. of Delhi, and of Academic Council of National Institute of
Homoeopathy, Govt. of India. He is a Resource person for various Reorientation
Training programmes, CME programmes, seminars and workshops in different
homoeopathic Institutions and organizations from all over India. He had also been
member of CCRH Governing Body, CCRH Standing Finance Committee, and CCRH
Scientific Committee.

His relentless work and zeal to contribute to the Profession has Yielded in a Number
of Prestigious and Authentic Publications

His work had been repeatedly recognised as State Award for meritorious service to
the field of health care from Govt. of Delhi in February 2006. He is Recipient of Life
Time Achievement Award from Board of Homoeopathic System of Medicine, Delhi in
April 2009. He has received WHO Fellowship and is also a fellow of Royal London
Homoeopathic Hospital, London, U.K.; New England School of Homoeopathy,
Connecticut, USA, and from Management Sciences for Health, Arlington, USA in
2006.
These are the excerpts from the discussion with him to review the present state of
Homeopathy and seek his directions for the fraternity.

Questions 1.

As a Teacher and senior Faculty, you have seen the transition over
years, According to you what are still the Grey areas for a Homeopath?

There is no doubt on the perceptible transition in the medical field in

general and homoeopathy in particular.
In the current scenario, homoeopathic medical colleges and hospitals
need to be upgraded both in terms of infrastructure and current medical
education and quality protocols.
Shortage of medical, nursing and paramedical staff should also be
addressed urgently.

Question 2.

In the present scenario, how the fresh Graduates should approach the
society?
Keeping themselves update in their knowledge, skills and aptitude in
consonance with current developments in medical science.

The fresh graduate has many options open apart from going into private
practice. They can always go for advance studies in your branch liking
which are offered in MD Homoeopathy.
Young Homoeopath who has administrative vision you can think about
MBA Public Health or Hospital Administration.
Research oriented graduates can plan their own research and get the
collaboration with some organization or submit their project protocol to
CCRH.
They also have a choice to join Homoeopathic Pharmaceutical
Company.
Question 3.

What are the Topics you suggest should be included in the curriculum at
the under graduate and masters level to improve the clan of
Homoeopaths?

As far the current curriculum is concerned my perception is that no

change as such is required immediately but the curriculum needs to be
updated regularly with changing trends and priorities in medical field.

Question 4.

As a senior Faulty, what are your Suggestions for the amateur

Homoeopath to approach practice to earn their Livelihood respectably?

Homoeopathy demands far greater dedication and hard work with

commitment to the cause, along with keeping themselves update in their
knowledge, skills and aptitude in consonance with current developments
in medical science.

Question 5.

Charitable Organisations (free Homeopathic Dispensary /Clinics) do they

really help the cause of a Homeopaths?

No.

Question 6.

Do we really Groom our Students in Homoeopathic Colleges as per the

Present Demand / need of the Medical Sciences?

Homoeopathic medical colleges and hospitals need to be upgraded both

in terms of infrastructure and current medical education and quality
protocols.

addressed urgently.
Question 7.

Do we provide a platform for the research for the research activities in

our Institutes?

Homoeopathic medical colleges and hospitals have enough clinical

material and skill-set to conduct research.
In Delhi we have DHAP.
However, the need of the hour is more of knowledge sharing and
collaboration among all institutes, and documentation of day-to-day
activities.

Question 8.

Kindly put some light on the role of Apex bodies like CCRH and DHAP
for Research Activities?

CCRH, the apex body in research is already conducting research in

different areas, along with publication of their studies, monographs, etc.
They are also involved in revision of old textbooks, development of
clinical protocols, and international collaboration in research.
They also provide aid to medical colleges for conducting research under
their extramural schemes and STSH scheme for students.

Question 9.

As a professional how a Homoeopath should approach the Society to

lead a respectable and acceptable Lifestyle?

Respect and regard, you have to earn with your hard work and untiring
commitment to your patients.
Out past generation is best example they never had those facilities
where they studied. They left no stone unturned to compensate their
deficiency through group learning in the form of monthly group
discussions.
In their personal and professional life they were sincerely and
empathically remained committed to their patients at large.
They educated patients about the goodness of homoeopathy and
propagated the system at grass root level and brought this system to
current national level in India.
We feel happy and proud to be the part of Primary Health Care system
under the Umbrella of AYUSH.
If we want to have respect and regard in society then need of hour is to
work dedicatedly, update your knowledge, skills and aptitude keeping in
with current developments in medical science and translate same into
patient care.

Question 10.

Any Suggestion / Appeal to the students of Homoeopathy/ Institutes /

Governing Councils / Govt. Bodies, etc.

Students should be more dedicated to the profession.

Institutes must raise their standards with respect to current standard
treatment protocols and quality benchmarks.
Governing councils and Govt. bodies must ensure strict implementation of all
minimum standards of medical education and patient care.
