Abstract
At Texas Childrens Grace Hospital we have had a recent decrease in the number of

parents choosing to vaccinate their children. Some parents who are uneducated about

how the vaccines work. This product is something that our company can benefit from

with a decrease in number of patients being affected during seasonal outbreaks. The

Quadrivalent flu shot is different than the flu nasal spray. The flu nasal spray should not

be used during 2017-2018 CDC.gov).Texas Childrens Grace Hospital will have a more

innovative way to safely, efficiently, and effectively treat their patients. Medicine is

constantly advancing, and this product has the potential to be very beneficial to Texas

Childrens Grace Hospital.

iii
Introduction
Purpose
The reason that Texas Childrens Grace Hospital should acquire the flu nasal spray
formulations is because this product has the potential to decrease the number of
children affected by the seasonal influenza, which is a major health concern. Annually,
there is an estimated 3 to 5 million cases of seasonal influenza in a severe level. With
an estimate of 250,000 to 500,00 deaths(CDC.gov). The flu vaccine is very common,
and can be easily contracted through simply coughing, sneezing or talking. The flu can
cause serious complication in a child's health, and can even lead to death. When a child
isnt vaccinated it not only puts that child at risk, but also puts others at risk. Our
purpose is to inform parents and our team about the research that we have gathered
about the traditional flu vaccine, the flu nasal spray, why parents choose not to
vaccinate their children, and which vaccine parents choose is they do decide to
vaccinate their children.

Problem
The problem is simply the amount of children that arent being vaccinated for the
seasonal flu annually, and the lack of multiple vaccinations provided. At Texas
Childrens Grace Hospital we have had a recent decrease in the number of parents
choosing to vaccinate their children. Some parents are uneducated about how the
vaccines work. This product is something that our company can benefit from with a
decrease in the number of patients being affected during seasonal outbreaks. The
Quadrivalent flu shot is different than the flu nasal spray. The flu nasal spray should not
be used during 2017-2018(CDC.gov).Texas Childrens Grace Hospital will have a more
innovative way to safely, efficiently, and effectively treat their patients. Medicine is
constantly advancing, and this product has the potential to be very beneficial to Texas
Childrens Grace Hospital.

Description
By utilizing advanced medication, the medical field has gained a way to treat multiple
types of influenza for patients. The Quadrivalent flu shot is an injectable vaccination that
is injected into the muscle of the upper arm (WebMD). This shot is known to be made
from dead influenza virus so one cannot get the flu. It is approved for use in different

1
age groups, including children as young as 6 months. Mothers who have babies and
want them to get vaccinated during the flu season can be sure that the medication is not
harmful to the baby in any way. The injectable shot is different from the spray because
the spray does not protect against the most common flu strains. This why experts have
recommended that patients discontinue using the product until researchers fix the
problem.
Benefits

Effective
The traditional influenza vaccination is more protective than the flu nasal spray. It is
used every flu season and has not been recalled from the market. Children and adults
are able to get this vaccination. It is highly recommended for young children, pregnant
women, people with weakened immune systems, and patients with asthma, and
diabetes. The health factors stated previously can contribute and typically make one
have high risk of complicated influenza that in some cases can amount to pneumonia.
Safe
There are no added products that will harm the patient in any way. The product is
simply to protect against strains of influenza during the upcoming season. There has
been many studies comparing both the nasal spray and the flu vaccine by the American
Academy Of Pediatrics, and the Quadrivalent shot is deemed more effective(AAP.org).

Affordable
The price of the flu vaccinations range from $15.00-$30.00. Health insurance price
discounts may vary depending on what coverage a person has.

Concern
Although the vaccination protects and lower risks for getting the flu, One can still get it
but the complications and death is less severe (Health and Wellness). Since the
vaccination takes up to two weeks to develop in your immune system, you are
unprotected at this time. Children who are attending daycare or grade school that has
recently been vaccinated can still pick up this virus if the medicine has not yet
developed its immunity. There are also some allergy concerns associated with the flu
vaccine. Flu Vaccines are manufactured with egg based technology, they contain a
small amount of egg protein called Ovalbumin. Although severe allergic reactions are
uncommon it would be beneficial to monitor patients with known allergies to eggs.

Conclusion
Texas Childrens Grace Hospital values the health and safety of its patients and
employees. Although other medications have been sufficient, effective and safe in the

4
past, the rapid advancement in medicine has showed that we need this product to lower
the risk of people catching this virus. By providing the company with the Quadrivalent flu
vaccination, we have added an extra healthcare solution for those in need. This
vaccination along with other that we already have here at our company, will make it
easier, safer, and more sufficient for us to treat patients. In the near future we plan on
making this vaccination the number one treatment for the seasonal outbreak.
