Second Sunday of Advent
Recently I saw a van driving down a busy Arch Street at midday in the middle of the week. Its windows
were open and the music was blaring. It was a commercial vehicle and had Pest Control written in
large letters all around the van. The high-volume music was the very recognizable peppy dance music
that Schroeder plays during the Charlie Brown Christmas Special. I wondered whether the driver of
the van was knew how funny this scene was. Or maybe I was the only one who found this humorous.
Doesnt our life of faith sometimes make us feel out of sync with the larger culture? If it never feels that
way, Id suggest that we are doing something wrong. Even within the life of faith, there are different
ways to go about it.
Think for a moment about the fact that so many of our Advent and Christmas images are associated with
the season of Winter. In the Southern hemisphere, faithful Catholics go through this liturgical season in
late Spring and early Summer. Perhaps this forces the use of somewhat different symbols, but these folks
have the same Catholic faith.
Think about the faith of someone who participates in all things about this holiday, but has no money for
presents. For much of the world, the extravagance available to some North Americans is out of the
question. So wealth and monetary generosity isnt an absolutely essential part of the faith, nor of the
celebration of Christmas.
There is a sense in which people of faith really are marching to the beat of a different drummer. Their life
of faith should feel odd and weird and surreal. We dont jump on the next fad or trend, especially if that
trend means de-humanizing someone. Having the generosity of Spirit that Jesus had means sharing our
time and resources with causes which might be unpopular in the general population.
A note about how things are going at the Shrine these days. We continue to be ambitious, tackling big
projects when we are able. Our partnership with Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program continues
to strengthen. We are planning to expand our women-only medical clinic from one day to two days a
week, in order to meet the growing demand. We are so grateful to the many people who have made this
clinic such a success. We also appreciate the confidence that homeless women show in the staff and the
friars of the Shrine. You are most welcome here.
