BHEL in Water treatment An Overview

BHEL has been in the field of Water treatment for many years now. The first one million gallons
per day Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant in India for public utility needs
was put up by BHEL in Narippayur, Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu in the year 1999.
Subsequently BHEL developed RO based water treatment plants for boiler feed make-up for
power plant applications. BHEL has an agreement with M/s. GE, one of the world leaders in
water treatment for the manufacture and supply of large RO based water treatment plants.
Now BHEL has rich experience in treating water from different sources for use in various
applications.

Small steps that create a big difference

While designing a Reverse Osmosis plant, it is very important to keep in mind the
characterisation of raw water and its pre-treatment design. With all the important variables like
physical, chemical properties, temperature and fouling potential of feed water, a proper
Reverse Osmosis plant can be built only after a detailed analysis of feed water is done. All this
plus the expertise of plant supplier go a long way in determining the success of a Reverse
osmosis plant. BHEL with its rich experience in water treatment is committed to provide
durable water treatment plant for years of hassle free operation to Customer.

Boiler feed water
Boiler feed water quality (often called DM
[De-Mineralized water] water) is of utmost
and primary importance for the successful
operation of the power plant. Many of the
outages of the boiler are due to the tube
failure, a direct consequence of scaling.
Boiler feed water should essentially have a
conductivity of less than 0.1 S/cm & silica
level of less than 0.02 ppm.
Traditionally boiler feed water was
generated through conventional DM plants
Pressure Sand Filters at
after pre-treating the feed water through Pipavav 700MW Power Plant
Clarifier, filters like PSF, ACF, etc.

Benefits of Ultra filtration & Reverse Osmosis

RO comes in handy where the TDS levels in the raw water are high. The basic principle of RO
helps in removing the dissolved salts and reduces the load on MB system.
With the introduction of Ultra filtration
(UF) upstream of the RO system, specific
elements like colloidal silica (which are
otherwise difficult to remove) gets
separated with consistent SDI15 < 3
making the water fit for admission to RO
process.
Thermal Power plants which use Sea
water for the process should necessarily
go for two stage RO and a MB unit to
produce boiler quality water. RO concept is gaining momentum (due to reduced membrane
cost & energy efficient membranes) even in the Middle -East, where Thermal Desalination
process was dominating till recently.

Electro De-Ionisation (EDI), units are now poised to replace resin based DM plant due to
advantages like lesser foot print and very less chemical consumption.

Sewage Treatment Plant (STP)
BHEL can also provide sewage treatment plants with highly efficient state-of-art Membrane Bio
Reactor (MBR) technology for waste recycle and to meet strict pollution control norms.

BHEL have recently set-up 2 sewage treatment plants of 1MLD each at BHEL-Ranipet factory
and at BHEL-Ranipet Township.
