CHAPTER I
PRELIMINARY

1.1 Background
Writing is an activity that can not be separated from the students, especially during
lectures. Both in writing lab reports, papers, final assignments, essays and so on,
students are required to write it properly and correctly. But in reality, not all students
have a good understanding of it.
Why can we say that? This can be proved by looking at the student's scientific work,
one of which is an essay. Most structures are less organized and the discussion is
not fixed on one topic. In addition, students usually do not include facts that support
their opinions in the essay. These things still miss the making of essays among the
students.
Therefore, to deepen the knowledge and improve the ability of students in the
activities of writing scientific papers, especially essays, needed a deeper discussion
of the essay, both in terms of characteristics, forms, tips and writing steps. The
above issues will be discussed in an Indonesian paper entitled "Essays".

2.5 Part of the essay
A basic essay can be divided into three parts:
Preliminary
This section contains background information that identifies the subject and the
introduction of the subject to be assessed by the author.
The body of the essay
This section presents all information about the subject matter.
Closing
This passage concludes by recalling the central idea, the summary of the body of the
essay, or adding some observations about the subject judged by the author.
2.6 Tips in Essay Making
A good essay should contain opinions or views, proof of that view, and facts or
examples as supporters. It can be seen in the following format:
Topic : ............
1. The first opinion
a. Explanation / discussion
b. Proof
c. Example

2. Second opinion
a. Explanation / discussion
b. Proof
c. Example
3. And so on.
2.7 Essay Making Steps
1. Define theme or topic.
Determining the theme or topic to be discussed in an essay and poured into a central
idea in the form of one complete sentence, where the main idea is a view or stand on
the selected topic.
2. Create an outline or outline of ideas to be discussed.
The purpose of making an outline is to put ideas about your topic in a script in an
organized format. Then write an outline of your idea of the topic you are referring to
If you try to convince, give the best argument
If you describe a process, write down the steps so readers can understand
If you are trying to inform something, explain the main categories of the information
3. Write down our opinions as the author with a brief and clear sentence.
4. Write the body of the essay.
Begin by sorting the key points that will be discussed, then make some sub-themes
of discussion to make it easier for readers to understand the purpose of our idea as
a writer, then we must develop the subtema we have made before.
5. Make the first paragraph of its nature as a prelude.
6. Write down the conclusions.
This is important because in order to shape the opinion of the reader we must give a
conclusion of opinion of our idea as the author. Because the essay writer's job is like
that. In contrast to news writers in the mass media who should (indeed) be neutral.
2.8 Essay Practice Practice
Allowing Poor Students
It's ugly, poor, less intelligent, and alive again! That's how Tukul often mocks.
Children like that from year to year meet our foundation schools. Should I feel bad
about managing this kind of school? Is there any reason to be loyal to his students?
For what school is built? This is an important question in addressing the reality of our
school which is mostly filled with poor children. School is a living room. At school a
person develops his personality. So it should not matter with any kind of kid at
school, including the frail capital of his life. However, to be honest, it is not easy to
latch on to these kind of students.
Students who are poor, shabby, less intelligent again, often addressed as bad luck.
What's more unlucky is when they do not get a chance to cultivate their life by
studying in school. Those are the kind of kids that many writers meet in class.
They are a representation of the nation's children who are defeated because of
poverty. Fortunately, the foundation is committed to making room for them. We hope
our school provides opportunities for the growth of their personalities.
Poverty makes them less intelligent. Most of them are school graduates who do not
have a good study tradition. So it's not easy to invite them to persevere in class.
Therefore, we are consciously too heavy to displace the achievements of favorite
school students who freely recruit smart children, have enough, and have a good
tradition of study.
One thing we strive for is to stop the "misfortune" of our children's lives. If there are
one or two of our graduates who finally can compete with kids from favorite schools,
it's been great.
If any of our children graduate with the awareness of the importance of caring for the
struggle for our own destiny, it becomes our satisfaction as an educator. We see
they have exposed the shell of their lives because of poverty. Is not this the essence
of education that struggles to uncover self-impairment?
For those of us who have long struggled with poor children, there are many struggles
of life as educators while accompanying them. A friend of ours was made to cry
when her disciples did not want to take the exam because they prefer to work to
support their family.
Other friends feel meaningful as an educator when forced to take a number of
students to take the exam even though they have not paid the tuition.
The others were relieved when all the students could take the test even though for
that he had to beg the donors for the cost of the examinations of his students. There
is also a grateful and amused because several times must be willing to sell pet birds
for the cost of accommodation for the students race.
In such a reality, the poor children in school are actually guiding the teacher's life
struggle. They are like creating an outbound for the growth of our souls as
educators. They "force" us to teach in as simple and creative ways as possible.
Weakness of reason and low endurance to persevere in the classroom to educate us
to be more patient.
The children help us jump over the boundaries of life as educators. They are our real
helpers to gaining meaningful living as educators. With poor children, we are not just
teachers who teach knowledge. More than that they help us learn to be the perfect
human being.
However, not many teachers have gained meaningfulness of living with their poor
students. Many teachers from favorite rich schools are not willing to relocate to poor
schools. They feel discarded when transferred to poor school. The reason is, in poor
schools their income outside the basic salary dropped dramatically, no physical
gallantry, nor did the students meet interesting again.
The flow of hedonism, consumerism, and pragmatism has displaced the ideals of
many teachers. All measured by money and facility updates. Moreover, these years
of teacher attention are often mobilized by salaries and various benefits. The
dynamics of education that is more like the appearance of a kind of building and a
variety of luxurious activities make the teacher no longer grazes the struggle as an
educator. Poor schools became bad luck.
Until here we ask, what kind of generation will be born from educators who are nih
idealism and struggle?
