Educational Philosophy

Teaching is one of the most noble professions one can pursue. Becoming a teacher has
been my dream from the time I was a young child and, in the time since, my reasons for wanting
to be a teacher have both increased in number and evolved. I want to become a teacher for so
many reasons, the primary of which being that I want nothing more than to make a difference in
the world, and educating the minds and hearts of tomorrow is the best way I can imagine doing
so! Teaching English to young adults is the best way I can imagine making a positive influence
on someones life. Living my life serving the higher cause of education is the best way I can
imagine spending my professional career.

Education means many different things to both practicing and aspiring teachers, however,
in my opinion, the primary purpose of education is to increase the mind in some way, whether
that be the gaining of content based knowledge or increasing ones ability to empathize with
people of different cultural background, education is the imparting of any new knowledge. This
belief coincides with another reason Ive always wanted to become a teacher. I want to be able to
not only improve the minds of young people via teaching them information but to improve their
minds by teaching them to be good citizens. By teaching students both informational knowledge
and moral knowledge students will be able to leave my classroom citizens of the world who will
then be able to go out and make the it a better place.

To achieve this dual purpose in my teaching career I plan on creating a student-centered

classroom which emphasizes both learning and teaching in my classroom. In my future
classroom, I plan to emphasize the universal nature of learning in that every student has the
ability to learn and every person has the ability to be a student. As a teacher, I hope to model
good learning in my classroom as I write, read, and learn alongside my students. I will also
continue the learning process throughout my career as I assess the way I teach and constantly
improve upon the structure of my classroom, as teaching is an ever-changing craft. In addition to
the content-based knowledge I hope to share with my students I aim to create a sense of
community in my classroom through which my students will learn the basics of good citizenship.
This endeavor will also be pursued in my classroom through discussion based critical thought
activities which challenge students in their cultural knowledge and moral justifications.
