ASIA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION

CT095-3-2
Principles of Networks and Network Design (PND)

Group Assignment

Intake :
Lecturer : Dr. Ma'en Tayseer Ekrayem Alrashdan

Learning outcomes:
1. Assess organizational and technical goals and determine suitable tools and technologies
to design a network.
2. Propose a network topology and model for addressing and numbering.
3. Recommend suitable switching protocols, routing protocols, network management
strategies and security mechanisms in relation to network design.
4. Construct a suitable test plan and document a proposed network design.

SCENARIO

You are employed by Signom Networks, a company that provides installation and technical
support services for clients networks. They regularly take on a number of apprentices and guide
them through their studies and implementation.

One of their clients which is a multinational motorcycle manufacturer requests to design a new
network that will let the company scale to a larger size. The campus network will support about
200 employees and a new data center. Another feature of the campus network will be a state-of-
the-art manufacturing facility with networked equipment that communicates with servers in the
data center that support real-time control and management. Engineers will access the servers
from their PCs in the access layer of the campus network. This client is planning to open a
branch sales office in the city where the retail companys corporate headquarters which reside
about 500 Kilometres away.

Your team (group) is responsible of proposing the network, the necessary equipment,
security issues, and any other operational requirements for their client. You are also
requested to:

1. Develop a multi-site computer network scenario to support various segments of network

to meet both technical and business requirements. Minimum number of sites (segments)
is 4. Discuss the rationale for your groups defined requirements.
2. Design the logical network to support the multi-site daily operations your design should
consider (Topology, Models for addressing and naming, Switching and routing protocols,
Security strategies, Network management strategies)

3. Design the physical network (LAN, WAN, VLAN, etc) and select the associated
internetworking devices (routers, gateway, switches, bridges, printers, firewalls) and
protocols.

4. Implement the topology optimization, simulation tests, etc

5. Design documentations :

a. Business goals explain the role the network design will play in helping an
organization succeed
b. Technical goals include scalability, performance, security, manageability,
adaptability, and affordability
c. Design requirements reflect priorities and tradeoffs, show how technical goals
help meet business goals

ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS

1. You are required to complete the assignment in a group of not more than 4 members.
2. You are required to build a complete computer network environment for the organisation
which you have selected. Part of the project requires to do some research on the network
devices which have been used in the project. The comparison and reasons should be given
the choices of devices.
3. Discussion and justification of logical and physical design decisions explicitly related to
business and technical goals, design requirements and summary of service requirements.
4. Recommendations for deployment and a plan for evolving the design as new requirements
arise or future growth
5. As part of project management, you are required to develop a Gantt chart (project plan) that
indicates clearly the activities that are required in order for the project to be a success.
6. The report has to be well presented and should be typed. Submission of reports that are
unprofessional in its outlook (dirty, disorganised, inconsistent look, varying coloured paper
and size) will not fair well when marks are allocated.
7. Ensure that the report is printed on standard A4 (210 X 297 mm) sized paper. Paper weight
of 80 grams and above is highly recommended.
8. The report should have a one (1) margin all around the page as illustrated below:
1 inch 1 inch

9. Every report must have a front cover. A transparent plastic sheet can be placed in front of the
report to protect the front cover. The front cover should have the following details:-
a) Name of group members.
b) Intake code.
c) Subject.
d) Project Title.
e) Date Assigned (the date the report was handed out).
f) Date Completed (the date the report is due to be handed in).

10. Plagiarism is a serious offence and will automatically be awarded zero (0) marks.
11. All information, figures and diagrams obtained from external sources must be referenced
using the Harvard referencing system accordingly.

*IMPORTANT*

You have to hand in your assignment hardcopy on time with the Course Work Submission and
Feed Back Form.
