Lesson Objectives/Goals - Students will have a discussion about the
storyline, characters, and problems in this book - Students will demonstrate their understanding of the text by writing and creating the next chapter of the book
Assessment - Students will be assessed on their
understanding of the book as they present their chapters to their peers
Lesson Structure/Procedures 1. Students will begin this lesson in large
group at the carpet 2. Students will be sitting in a large circle to create a space for open discussion 3. The following questions will be written on the whiteboard to be discussed - What is this book really about? - How would you describe Ceces personality? - What are some of the ways in which everyday life is set up for people who can hear? How are some of those things challenging for people who are deaf? - In what ways did Cece have to stand up for herself? Have you ever had to stand up for yourself like this? - What happens in the end? - What is the message of this story? 4. After about a 20 minute conversation about the previously asked questions, I will introduce the following writing assignment to write and draw the next chapter of the book 5. I will re-read the last few pages of the book and ask rhetorical questions like What do you think happens next? Do you think Cece and Martha stay friends? How does the rest of Ceces year look like? 6. Students will be given a blank sheet of white paper to write and draw what the next chapter of the book will look like 7. When they are finished, students will be presenting their chapters to their classmates
