SPED 775 Journal Reflection from Teaching Video

The purpose of this journal was to encourage us to become reflective in our teaching by

examining our instruction, recognizing research-based practices, and by improving and

modifying our lessons. This particular journal assignments topic was feedback.

This assignment was addressed by actively watching my lesson plan three video while

note-taking. Taking notes throughout the video helped me to identify some strengths,

suggestions of what I should have or could have done, and areas of weakness that I still need to

work on. Feedback was an area of focus for me after reviewing this video. I still continue to

develop in the area of feedback. After reviewing the video, I then read the four articles about

feedback in order to incorporate research-based practices into my own. What I was able to

observe in the video was supported by the research-based articles where I was able to express

the meaning of each observation.

The journal assignment did not require any revisions grammatically. The professor made

some comments that justified my findings. One comment I did make was the revelation I had of

using the language I love or I like due to the fact that it implies judgement. This course has

really taught me the meaning of implying judgement through words. The feedback given has

made an impact on my teaching. I have continued to reread that journal reflection to remind

myself of how feedback should be given. It is something I continue to work on professionally as

well, especially as I continue to videotape lessons and analyze them.

I learned the value of feedback from this assignment. I also learned that I lack in the

area of verbal feedback, which is an area I am still conscious of. The articles helped me to

organize ways on how to provide the verbal feedback and just how effective positive feedback

can be, especially to students with disabilities. The professor from my advanced practicum

course mentioned a strategy that has stuck with me. She had mentioned to place a symbol in

my classroom that reminds me to give that verbal feedback. I have a sign in my classroom that

states the power of feedback. This is my constant reminder to provide that verbal feedback to

my students on a daily basis.
