TEACHER: Karen Olivas DATE

TEKS: GRADE LEVEL: 9th

Biology 5(A) Describe the stages of the cell
cycle, including deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
replication and mitosis, and the importance
of the cell cycle to the growth of organisms.
Biology 6 (G) Recognize the significance of
meiosis to sexual reproduction.

LEARNING TARGET: Meiosis, Mitosis FLIP COMPONENT URL:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dP27dyr6eFg

Big Idea:

Mitosis is for growth and repair. Meiosis produces haploid gametes.

Essential Questions:

What are the stages of mitosis?

How is meiosis important for reproduction?

TEKS covered: (Please list relevant TEKS covered in your lesson)

BIOLOGY- Science concepts. The student knows how an organism grows and the importance of cell differentiation.
The student is expected to:

5 (A) describe the stages of the cell cycle, including deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) replication and mitosis, and the
importance of the cell cycle to the growth of organisms
6 (G) Recognize the significance of meiosis to sexual reproduction

Objective/Purpose: (The student expectations must be clearly defined and in line with the district/state standards. For
the students benefit, explain what students will be able to do by the end of the lesson and why these objectives are
important to accomplish

We will distinguish between meiosis and mitosis.

I willcomplete vocabulary, watch a video and complete my foldable, and complete a meiosis & mitosis cell activity!

Materials/Resources/Equipment Needed:

Projector
Our video, and rap video
Phones/Computers with Internet Access
Worksheets.
Definitions posters
Foldables
Cell activity worksheet, and cutouts
Pencil /Pen
Mnemonic

7-E LESSON PLANNING MODEL: Modified Madelyn Hunter/5-E Lesson Planning Template (1-16/RLA)
Instructional delivery (What information is essential for the student to know before beginning and how will this skill
be communicated to students? This is the section where you explicitly delineate how you will present the lesson.
Direct instruction? Small group? Centers? The instruction could include a variety of instructional delivery
methods.)

1. The students can remain in the seats they are usually in, but there will be no more than 6 groups in the
class.
2. We will first work on the vocabulary poster activity.
3. To motivate the students to learn about the differences between meiosis and mitosis, we will begin by
showing a silly meiosis and mitosis rap video.
4. Next, we will do a phases hand gesture activity.
5. We will then play the Video, and simultaneously the students will be completing the foldable by filling in the
blanks as the video is being played.
6. Complete meiosis and mitosis cells activity.
7. Verbally share something you learned closure, and/or see if students are able to answer the essential
questions.

Prior Understanding/Knowledge Transference (ELICIT)

Task: Complete the vocabulary.

Tools:
1. Vocabulary posters.

Strategies:
There are terms that the students need to know in order to understand what we are talking about,
which is why I we made the posters, so the students can learn these definitions before moving on
to anything else.
Each table will be assigned a word to explain. The definition (obtained from the biology book), is
already given to the students in the poster. The students will have 2 minutes to use any of their
technology to look up the word assigned.
After the two minutes, the selected speaker of each group should be able to explain to the
classmates in student friendly language what that scientific word means.

Anticipatory Set (ENGAGE):

To engage the students into the topic we will show a video from ASAP Science titled Mitosis vs Meiosis
RAP BATTLE!. The video will make the students laugh, and they will get a quick overview about what
mitosis and meiosis are.

7-E LESSON PLANNING MODEL: Modified Madelyn Hunter/5-E Lesson Planning Template (1-16/RLA)
(EXPLORE):

Task: Learn the order of the meiosis, mitosis phases (Prophase -> Metaphase -> Anaphase -> Telophase.
Tool: Mnemonic hand gesture activity- I Passed My Algebra Test with a C. Interphase, Prophase,
Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, Cytokinesis.
Strategy: We will show the students a kinesthetic mnemonic, that we will all do as a class together. This
activity is kinesthetic, because the students have to be moving their hands and making different shapes.

Model (EXPLAIN):

Task: Watch the video about meiosis and mitosis and complete the foldable.
Tool: Video, Foldable
Strategy: Students will be watching our video, and simultaneously complete the foldable they have.

Independent Practice (ELABORATE):

Task: Complete the mitosis and meiosis cell activity to have a visual representation of meiosis and mitosis.
Tool: Worksheets, cutouts to put on worksheets.

Strategy:
The students will receive a cells activity worksheet with meiosis and mitosis (1 per group). As a
group, the students will receive cutouts with the stages of the different cell phases, and the students
will have to place them in the correct space.
The students will also label the phases as they are completing this activity- Prophase, Metaphase,
Anaphase, Telophase

Transfer of Learning (EXTEND):

Task: Complete the mitosis and meiosis cell activity

Tool: mitosis and meiosis cell activity
Strategy: The activity described previously is an extension of everything the students have learned. They
are using the previously learned information to order the cell phases, differentiate between meiosis &
mitosis, and using the hand gesture activity to fill in the information about the phases. From everything they
have learned the students will be able to provide reasonable solutions, and they do all of this in this cells
activity.

Check for Understanding (EVALUATE):

We will evaluate if the students understand the concept by reviewing their cell activity work to see if
they are correct.

Closure:

Share something you learned today, or ask the students to answer one of the essential questions. Randomly
picked students will verbally share something they learned.
