engagement of their daughter, Tina Sevilla, to Eric Stear,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Stear of Batavia, OH.
Tina is a 2003 graduate of St. Ursula Academy and
2008 graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a
bachelors degree in Interior Design. She is employed as
a Trends Analyst for LPK in Cincinnati. Eric is a 2002
graduate of Derby High School in Derby, KS, and a 2006
and 2008 graduate of the University of Cincinnati with
bachelor and master degrees in Architecture. He is an
architect with Jose Garcia Design in Cincinnati.
A fall 2010 wedding is being planned in Toledo, OH.
Blaisdell - Gindy
June Blaisdell of Sylvania announces the engagement
and future wedding of her daughter, Audrey Blaisdell, to
Allan Gindy.
Allan is the son of Sam and Gayleen Gindy, of Sylvania.
Allan is a 2004 graduate of Northview High School and
a 2009 graduate of the University of Toledo College of
Engineering. Audrey is a 2006 graduate of Northview High
School and will graduate from the University of Toledo
School of Nursing next spring.
Allan has been employed at SSOE, and Audrey has been
employed at Wood County Hospital. They have planned a
May 28, 2011 wedding.
Kern - Halsey
Scott and Julie Kern of Sylvania happily announce the
engagement of their daughter, Erika Ellen Kern, to Colin
David Halsey, son of David and Melita Halsey of Jenison,
MI.
Erika is a 2004 graduate of Northview High School. She
received a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from
Michigan State University in 2008. She is currently working
at Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital in Omaha, NE.
Colin is a 2004 graduate of Jenison High School. In
2008, he graduated from Michigan State University with a
Bachelor of Science in Construction Management. Colin is
employed with McCarthy Building Companies in Omaha,
NE.
A September wedding is planned. Once married, the
couple will reside in Omaha, NE.

Local student caddie wins top honors

in Evans Scholars Program
Dale Kretz, a former cad-
die from Sylvania Country
Club in Sylvania, was se-
lected as the Evans Scholars’
2010 Scholar of the Year at
the Foundation’s annual
Summer Outing on July 19.
Scholar of the Year is one of
the top honors in the Evans
Scholars Program.
Kretz, who is from Water-
ville, OH, graduated from Mi-
ami University in May with
a 3.96 GPA and degrees in
history and political science.
While in school, he earned
four perfect 4.0 semesters
and received several top Ev-
ans Scholar academic awards,
including the Carleton Blunt
Scholarship Award and the
National Committee Academ-
ic Achievement Award. At
his Evans Scholars Chapter,
Kretz served as chapter presi-
dent. He earned the Adelor J.
Petit New Scholar of the Year
Award and has twice received,
by Chapter vote, the highest
Scholar rating in the House.
In 2008, he studied abroad in
Florence, Italy, and in 2009,
he was selected Scholar of the
Year by the Toledo Golf Hall
of Fame. He is now pursuing
his Ph.D. in political science
at Washington University in
St. Louis.
In a recent letter to mem-
bers at Sylvania Country
Club, Kretz wrote: “This Pro-
gram has made everything in
my academic career possible.
The lessons I have learned,
the friendships I have made,
the person I have become: it
is the greatest understatement
conceivable to say that this
scholarship has changed my
life.”

outstanding leadership in the
classroom, at the Scholarship
House and on his university
campus,” said WGA President
and CEO John Kaczkowski.

Results of the 30th annual

Sylvania Triathlon
The maximum field of
750 participants competed
in Olander Park, Sylvania,
& Sylvania Township
during the 30th annual
Sylvania Triathlon on
Sunday, August 8.
Sylvania’s triathlon
began in 1981 as one of
the first in the nation, and
is actually four different
races: Olympic, Sprint,
Team, & Duathlon.
There were three win-
ners in the Olympic
Triathlon. The “First” to
cross the finish line were
actually a pair of com-
petitors! Aaron Scheidies
from Farmington Hills,
who is legally blind, com-
pleted the event in 1 hour,
57 minutes, and 21 sec-
onds, with his “guide,”
Matt West of Ypsilanti.
Despite Scheidies vision,
it is no surprise he and
West finished first.
Scheidies was the 2003
& 2004 International
Triathlon Union Physically
and West achieved their
goal of finishing in less
than 2 hours.
Because Scheidies and
West are in the Physically-
Challenged category,
bicycling together on
a twin bike, the official
Sylvania Triathlon win-
ner is Alex Resseau of
LaSalle, Michigan. He is
one of the few champions
in the 30-year history to
break the 2 hour mark, at
1:59:15. Jeanne DeBonis
of Brecksville, OH, was
the Women’s victor in
2:14:14.
Olympic triathletes
swim one mile in Lake
Olander, then bicycle
26 miles and conclude
with a 6.2-mile run, end-
ing on Vicksburg Drive.
This division features the
Collegiate category for
college-age participants,
as well as the Clydesdales.
William Vann, representing
Michigan State University,
led all Collegiate par-

the same Swim/Bicycle/
Run format as the longer
Triathlon, but at shorter
distances for newcomers.
Sprint triathletes swim
one-quarter mile, bike 13
miles, and run 3.1 miles.
John Hartpence of Defiance
won in 58 minutes and
53 seconds, with Tracy
DiSabato of Sunbury,
OH, the Woman’s titlist in
1:04:44.
The Duathlon has a
Run/Bicycle/Run format,
running 3.1 miles around
the Olander Park oval,
then biking 26 miles and
running another 6.2 miles
on the same course at the
triathletes. The Men’s
winner is Zach Szablewski
of Tiffin in 2:07:32, with
the Woman’s champion
being Jennifer Finn of East
Lansing at 2:27:24.

We will travel by Lakefront Lines from Neville Funeral Home,
Reynolds Corners Chapel, 5052 Dorr Street in Toledo, at 7:30 A.M.
arriving in Grosse Pointe Shores, MI at 10 A.M. to explore the home,
grounds and outer buildings of the Ford Estate nestled on the shores
of Lake Erie. Lunch is on your own at Bob Evans. Following lunch
we will travel on to Trader Joe’s, an alternative answer to your day-
to-day grocery experience. After boarding the bus at 4:30 P.M. we
plan to arrive home by 6:00 P.M. The cost is $43.00 and includes
continental breakfast, all transportation costs, access to the estate
as well as individual goodie bags. Join the fun! Seating is LIMITED
