MODEL QUESTION PAPER
Time: 03 Hours Maximum Marks: 100
Instructions to candidates:
1. Answer FIVE full questions selecting one from each unit.
2. Each unit consisting of two questions of 20 marks each.
UNIT-1
1 a Explain the functional requirements of pavements.
10
b List the functional distresses of cement concrete pavements and causes for any two
types of distresses, highlighting their remedial measures. 10
2 a Explain the Structural requirements of pavements 10
b List important failures in flexible pavement. Explain any two of them, giving details
on the primary causes and remedial measures. 10
UNIT-2
3 a Write the criteria for measurement of alligator cracking, edge cracking and rutting on
Bituminous pavement? 10
b Explain measurement of roughness of pavement using any two response type of
equipment 10
4 a What are the factors affecting the skid resistance? Explain briefly 10
b What are the different methods of measuring the pavement surface texture? Explain
any two methods. 10
UNIT-3
5 a Data obtained from DCP test conducted on the pavement is given in the table below.
Determine the i) pavement layer thickness and ii) CBR value of layers using any
relationships developed. Draw charts wherever necessary.

b What are the advantages of Interlocking Concrete Block Pavements? 5
c Discuss on the salient features of white topping proposed for an existing bituminous
pavement.

8 a Calculate the remaining service life of the pavement for the following data:
E1 = 2400MPa
E2 = 100MPa
E3 = 85MPa where E1, E2 and E3 is the modulus of elasticity for overlay and
surface, granular and subgrade course respectively. The calculated strain from IIT
Pave software was 592 and 205strains respectively at the bottom of bituminous
layer and on top of Subgrade layer respectively. Take Modulus of resilience of the
Subgrade to be 76 MPa. Compare the results obtained with the permissible limits as
per IRC provisions. 10
b Explain the step by step procedure for arriving at overlay thickness with FWD data,
based on IRC:115-2014. 10
UNIT-5
9 a Explain the salient features of Model box study and semifield test track studies.
Explain their advantages and disadvantages. 10
b A continuous vibration test conducted on a flexible pavement with a cyclic
continuous vibrator at 4000cps frequency yielded the following results.
