Description of the artifact and how it meets the standard and criteria:

My artifact is a student interest survey that I used in my classroom. This specific survey
is one I designed for my reading class. There are a variety of questions on my survey.
Some questions are content-related; some are not. Administering a student interest
survey helps me get to know my students and their needs. When I know what my
students are interested in and enjoy, then I can plan meaningful instruction for my
group. I am able to incorporate my students preferences and strengths into reading.
My reading class is a pull-out class for students that really struggle in reading. When I
am able to make connections to topics my students enjoy, I get better results in the
classroom.

Reflection on the artifact:

Giving student interest surveys and getting to know my students background are a few
of the key activities at the beginning of the school year. Its very important to me that I
create meaningful connections to my students and their interests. I know that the
material I teach is more powerful when it matters to my students. It sticks with them
longer, and my students are more engaged when I take this extra step. Finding out
information about my students can be done in many formats, and student interest
surveys are just one tool that I use. Other examples include team building activities and
sending parent communication.
