Grade: 2 Topic: Reading and Literature Content Area: ELA

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

After being introduced to the concept of theme through a BrainPop Jr. video, students will
participate in a class discussion about the elements of a story, paying particular attention to the
concepts of conflict, adversity, and perseverance. After going over their new vocabulary, and
working in their digital notebooks, students, will display their knowledge of the topic by
engaging in an online formative assessment, through Kahoot, scoring at least a 6 out of 8.

CCLS / +NYS STANDARDS AND INDICATORS

English Language Arts (CCS): LITERACY. (RL.2.3)

Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. Analyze how and
why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.

Indicator:
This will be evident when the students define and understand key vocabulary words such
as obstacle, overcome, adversity, perseverance, and answer questions about the
the story The Tortoise and the Hare in their Kahoot quiz

Technology (ISTE): KNOWLEDGE CONSTRUCTOR. (3c)

Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create
collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.

Indicator:
This will be evident when the students work in their digital notebooks on their ipads and
complete the interactive assignments -- dragging and dropping the characters under either
antagonist or protagonist and drawing lines with their stylus to match the vocabulary
word with the correct definition.

MATERIALS
BrainPop Jr. video, SMARTboard, whiteboard, dry-erase markers, ipads, digital
notebook activities, The Tortoise and the Hare passage, Kahoot quiz.

STRATEGIES

Teacher demonstration, guided practice, guided reading, group discussions, independent

practice, formative assessment.

MOTIVATION

Students will watch a BrainPop Jr. video detailing the concept of theme in
literature. Students will pay specific attention to the meaning of the word conflict and
how a character responds to hardships.

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES

Students will start off the lesson by watching an informational BrainPop Jr. video.
This video is mainly about understanding the theme of a story, there a few elements of
the video that the teacher should highlight, including the portion where they discuss
conflict and character dilemmas. After the conclusion of the video, the teacher will have
the students take the post-video quiz. (What is the theme of a story? What does the word
conflict mean? What happens when a character faces hard times? What did you learn
from the video?)

Students will then go over key vocabulary words with the teacher. Many of these
words and concepts are completely new to these students so it is important to be
thorough in the explanation. These words include: protagonist, antagonist, adversity,
obstacle, overcome, and perseverance. (Think of some heroes or main characters, what
traits do they have? Think of some villains or bad guys, what traits do they have? Do
you have any examples of adversity? How about perseverance? What does it mean to
overcome obstacles in a story?)

The class will then participate in a guided reading of the story The Tortoise and the
Hare. After the conclusion of the story, students will turn and talk with their group
mates about the story as well as the concepts introduced beforehand. (Who is the
protagonist of this story? Who is the antagonist? Did any character face and adversity
or obstacles? How did they overcome these obstacles? Give one example of
perseverance shown by a character in this story?)
After their group discussion, students will get their ipads and work individually on their
digital notebooks. The first assignment requires them to drag the words and pictures from the
middle and drop them onto the appropriate side, depending on whether or not the character is an
antagonist or a protagonist. The second assignment deals with the new vocabulary words,
students will be tasked with using their stylus to draw a line connecting the vocabulary word to
the correct definition. (What character is this? Is this a good guy or a bad guy? Is an antagonist
good or bad? Is a protagonist good or bad? Think about the definitions we went over earlier,
what words match with what definitions?)

The lesson will conclude with a formative assessment through a kahoot quiz. This quiz
consists of eight multiple choice questions relating to the plot of the story The Tortoise and the
Hare as well as questions about the new vocabulary words. This quiz should be a fun and
interactive way for students to display their understanding of the content. (I cant move on to the
next question until it is completely silent in here. Talking loses a point. Who got that one right?
Try your best!)

ADAPTATIONS

Students that read below grade level will be given to opportunity to work with a teacher or
a student that will assist them during the reading of the story. Students with fine motor skills
deficiencies will be allowed to point out their answers to the vocabulary match activity and
another student or teacher can physically draw the connecting lines for them.

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION

The teacher realizes not all students learn the same way. The class will be separated by
perceptual preferences.

For the students who are visual learners, the lesson was modified to include color
coordinating on the vocabulary section of the eTextbook. Each vocabulary word is in a
different font color and the color corresponds to the appropriate definition. This will help
students when they have to recall these definitions later on in the lesson. This section of
the eTextbook can be used as a reference throughout.
For the students who are interpersonal learners, the class will move into different
groups during guided reading. These groups will then turn and talk about the story, the
group discussion will help these learners understand the story and give them an
opportunity to express their opinions to their classmates.
For the students who are intrapersonal learners, the class will work individually during
the digital notebook activities.

For the students who are kinesthetic learners, the lesson includes the use of technology
in which they can drag and drop the pictures and words onto the appropriate side of the
page .

ASSESSMENT

The teacher will formally assess the Kahoot quiz, students are expected to score at least
a 6 out of 8 on the assessment.
The teacher will informally assess the student's ability to work together and cooperate
when they are in small groups during the guided reading.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICES

The students will be given a homework assignment where they will be tasked with
reading a story of the choice and listing the protagonist and antagonist, as well as detailing
a moment where a character faced adversity, overcame an obstacle, or showed
perseverance.

DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION AND ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT

DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION

Students who didn't meet the objective will be provided with a copy of the vocabulary
words and definitions to take home and use as assistance during their homework
assignment.

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT

Students who met the objective and demonstrated a great understanding of the lesson,
will be tasked with listing all of the antagonists and protagonists they can think of from
familiar movies or television shows, they will then list examples of these characters facing
adversity.
