2. Objectives

How to determine the actions for maintaining the serviceable condition of

spare parts during their storage period?

The objective is to develop a process for determining maintenance actions to

keep spare parts serviceable during their storage period by analyzing the
different processes to determine maintenance tasks and the different
deterioration factors between installed and spare parts.

Process Criteria

Determine at the beginning the most important spare parts.

Is the selected safeguard technically feasible and worth doing?
The process steps 2 through 6 of the RCM procedure.
Harmonization of the interval by consolidation into smaller number and
packages.
Clustering of the action.

1) Functions the desired capability of the system, how well it is to perform, and under what
circumstances
2) Functional failures the failed state of the system (when the system falls outside the desired
performance parameters)
3) Failure modes the specific condition causing a functional failure
4) Failure effects the description of what happens when each failure mode occurs
5) Failure consequences the description of how the loss of function matters
6) Maintenance tasks and intervals the description of the applicable and effective tasks, if any,
performed to predict, prevent, or find failures
7) Other logical actions including but not limited to run-to-failure, engineering redesigns, and
changes/additions to operating procedures or technical manuals

Maintenance Theory

Maintenance is the set of activities needed to sustain the integrity of

the spare part such that it operates as expected when required.

The basic of the reviewed maintenance methodologies is the one of

functional failure, which does not differentiate between the different
spare parts

OEMs storage instructions are not determined through a proactive

procedure.
