Introducing Photogrammetry
Photogrammetry is a process of creating 3D geometry from 2D photos.
The use of modern cloud computing makes an entirely new application
of photogrammetry accessible to less specialised audiences, including
smartphone users with no technical exposure to survey concepts.

If you have ever watched an episode of NCIS, played the latest version of Microsoft Kinect, or been
pulled over by the police after being clocked at doing 40 mph in a 25 mph zone, you have been
exposed to photogrammetry. The use of photogrammetry dates back to the mid-nineteenth century.

Today, this way of measuring is being combined with optics and scanners for a synergy in technology.

Johnson, Gena (2013)

In this white paper, we explore the theory and concept of photogrammetry, with examples to illustrate how it can
be applied to preliminary infrastructure design.

Autodesk 123D Catch allows 3D models to be
formed from photos taken with a smartphone,
tablet or DSLR camera. One of the most popular
uses of this is creating 3D models of friends and
family, which can then be viewed, shared or
printed in 3D.

The Technical Concept
The concept of taking multiple images of the
same object/scene (from different angles) to
extract 3D coordinates from projections of points
identified on the images is well-defined and
commonly used. While this concept is not new,
recent advances in cloud computing now provide
the power to automate the process with very
little input from the user.

The calculations in photogrammetry are based on spatial resection. To illustrate how this works, we created a simple
example using three images of a basic rectangular box, viewed from different positions (see diagram below). Some
obvious common points, (A, B, C, D) have been highlighted in colour. These are used to correlate the images and
form the geometry in 3D space as a point cloud.

The same process is used for more complex geometry, just in a vastly larger scale. The screen capture below is from
the online viewer on ReCap 360, which shows the camera positions and images used to form the model of a church.

Using ReCap 360
When using ReCap 360 to build models from photos, there is very little required in terms of user interaction and
inputting parameters most of the process is automatic. While there is optional functionality available for inputting
coordinates and distances, producing a model based on defaults is a simple task.

Uploading the photos from a desktop to the cloud can be the most time-consuming part of the process. High
resolution images from DSLR cameras are large files, even in JPEG format, so the uploading process is often
performed overnight. As soon as this is completed, the process of forming the 3D point cloud can be initiated. This
process will also take some time (depending on the resolution of the photos and quality of mesh selected), but also
requires no interaction from the user.

Once the model is formed, an email notification is sent and the model can be viewed online (from computer, tablet
or smartphone) and downloaded. If certain areas of the resulting 3D point cloud are not displayed correctly, more
photos can be taken and added to the project.

There are two main considerations in taking the photos:

Allow plenty of overlap between images.

1 This allows the cloud engine to identify common
points and process the model.

Make the images as sharp as possible.

Take photos 2 It is critical to have everything in focus, not just

example 2:
Infrastructure

In an experiment to explore the concepts, we used a preliminary reconstruction design that required placing a
roundabout into an existing five-way intersection.

The scenario presented a challenge when taking the photos to construct the 3D model, as an intersection does
not have the same clear reference points for overlap that are found on a building. Some experimentation was
required to achieve the correct camera angles and positions, but the resulting model was perfect for a preliminary
conceptual design that shows where the roundabout would fit, and its effect upon surrounding properties.

The 3D point cloud of the intersection is shown below in RGB colour.

Upon acceptance of the concept design, the detailed design process (including a full survey) can occur. The accuracy
of the point cloud can be verified from the survey and used for visualisation purposes, as well as adding extra detail
in the documentation process. The illustration below shows the preliminary design in the ReCap 360 point cloud.

Using this technique for preliminary design is not appropriate for all projects, as it could be 'overkill' for simple jobs,
or the specialised skills may be needed elsewhere. The five-way intersection example is a relevant one though, as
the hypothetical proposed roundabout involves reclaiming some public green areas, which could be a sensitive issue
from the public angle.

Cloud-based solutions present an attractive option for producing 3D models, with the advantage of requiring little
input from the user. Design software has matured to incorporate point clouds, so approaches that would have once
been impractical are now very feasible. The functionality can be used in a variety of workflows to add a new
dimension of rich data to existing processes. This involves evaluating which scenarios/projects are potentially
relevant, and establishing which groups and areas within the design workflows will benefit from the enhanced
models, so relevant discussions can occur.

Ultimately, as illustrated by the popularity of 123D Catch, the next

generation of designers will approach design challenges with
thought processes based on these concepts, so existing workflows
and practices need to evolve. The reality is that the options and
examples discussed in this paper are available today, and can be
readily applied to current projects.
