Instructions: Select a 4 - 7 minute clip from one of your practicum teaching rehearsals and review your direct instruction through answering the following questions. Please write 3- 7 sentence answers for each question. Be thorough and specific.
1. Had I written out my script in a direct instruction model? Would it have
helped my lesson delivery and success if I had done so? I did! It helped keep me on track this lesson and allowed me to have a lot more freedom in what I wanted and I actually was able to read the room and tell that I needed to just go ahead and sing the first verse with the diction I modeled before going into the history or meaning of the piece. 2. What was my ratio of 1, 2 and 3s? My ratio has been getting better and better with every rehearsal but the nature of this rehearsal made it 1 heavy for me! I still believe that this was the best rehearsal we have had so far this semester for me and that makes me happy to see improvement. My threes have also been getting better! 3. Were my students doing lots of 2s the entire time? Were they on task? As always my students were right on top of things and were on task and following beautifully the entire lesson. I wish someone else would have spoken in addition to Ellie when I asked about personal meanings, but thats okay! 4. Did I talk too much between every 2 and back to a 1? I think I didnt have as much off task talking this lesson but I still talked a bit too much. Im improving but I need to be more concise! 5. What kind of 3s did I use in this clip? Do I need to improve my use of 3s and if so, in what way? I used lots of 3sra feedback this rehearsal! I was also a lot more fluid in my 3s and conveying what I meant without tripping over that much over my tongue. 6. Were there any DI errors in this script? I dont believe so, but I could spent a lot less time on the history of the piece by knowing what I was saying about it a lot more fluid than what I did. 7. Did I turn any 1os into a 1a? I did! After sharing my own personal story with the piece I asked the choir to show their relation to the piece on their faces as I would be with mine. light and bright like the bells that would be dinging! 8. What was the pattern of the best chunk in this teaching sequence? (For example, 1a, 2p, 1a, 1d, 2v, 1o, 1a , 2p, 3sra) 1a, 1d, 2p, 1a, 1d, 2v, 1a, 1d 9. To summarize, what were the strengths of my Direct Instruction Model in this lesson? My strengths this rehearsal were definitely my fluidity within my lesson plan and my ability to dial it forward because I knew my plan so well! 10. To summarize, what were the weaknesses of my Direct Instruction Model in this lesson? My weaknesses were of course my of task talking, but Im still working on that and Im getting better every time! I also see that I need to work more on my pattern and my overall gestures to match what Im asking from the choir more. 11. What are my next steps? Concert, YAY!
