Foreword for SH3 Newbies and Pros!

Silent Hunter III is a relatively old game from the year 2005. To be able to play SH3 with the currently available SuperMods (e.g.: LSH3, CCoM, GWX, WAC or others) with
all Windows variations, the following have to be kept in mind:
- SH3 PATCH 1.4 The actual SH3 program version 1.4 is for all SH3 Supermods required
- 4GB-PATCH The with LSH3 V5.1 delivered 4GB-PATCH has to be applied to the SH3.EXE on all operating systems
- STARFORCE The outdated copy protection system of STARFORCE does not work under Windows 7 & VISTA and has to be bypassed
The following pages will describe in details all necessary steps for a successful installation of SH3 (with LSH3 V5.1). The complexity of the installation has increased
considerably. Therefore we advise to read this document carefully before starting a new installation of SH3 with LSH3 V5.1.

LSH3 V5.1 UPDATE or FULLVERSION?

Basically we recommend for all SH3 players a completely new installation, followed by the installation of LSH3 V5.1 FULLVERSION!
Some of the possible mistakes which may occur during updating (e.g. from LSH3 V5 to LSH3 V5.1, change from another SuperMOD or even a SH3-Multiinstallation) will be
excluded from the outset.
Additionally there is the LSH3 V5.1 UPDATE available for experienced LSH3 V5 players. It may be installed after LSH3 V5. For further information concerning
UPDATE or FULLVERSION see page 13.
System requirements
To use LSH3 V5.1 in a satisfying game play, the computer should meet certain minimum requirements.
Quality and performance of the built in hardware determine the loading time and the usability of the game:
Minimal: Processor Intel Centrino 2,0 GHz or comparable AMD-Processor, 2 GB main memory, graphics adapter with 256 MB of dedicated memory.
Loading time 15 to 20 minutes possible
Average: Processor Intel Pentium 2,6 GHz or comparable AMD Athlon, 3 GB main memory, graphics adapter with 512 MB of dedicated memory.
Optimal: Processor Intel Pentium i7 3,0 GHz or comparable AMD Athlon, 4 GB main memory, graphics adapter with 1024 MB of dedicated memory.
LSH3 V5.1 requires a sufficient amount of free hard disk space - minimum 20 GB. The MainMod requires approximately 3.8 GB. Additionally there will be the required disk
space for the backup oft he files to be overwritten by the JSGME when activating a new MOD.
LSH3 V5.1 desperately needs the 4GB-Patch for all operating systems! The 4GB-Patch is included in the LSH3 V5.1 packet and has to be activated by you
after the installation. Detailed information is available at page 16.
SH3 Uninstallation
If SH3 is already installed the game has to be removed completely. The game should be
completely removed by using the installation routine from the DVD.
Make sure that after the uninstallation the folder /SH3/ at your personal files is deleted. If not so
just delete it yourself.
For Windows 7 and Vista the folder /SH3/ will be located at My documents.
Advice: We strongly recommend using no saved careers or single missions from older LSH3
Versions!
Check SH3 DVD for PATCH 1.4 & STARFORCE

Since the year 2005 there are different Original SH3 DVD versions circulating with and without Patch 1.4 as well as with and without STARFORCE copy protection.
Please check your SH3 DVD to be able to choose the right installation steps consecutively.
Place your SH3 DVD into your computer > open Windows Explorer > navigate to setup.exe > click the right mouse button and select PROPERTIES > switch to register
VERSION:
Check the VALUE of FILEVERSION!

Check for PATCHVERSION
Value: 1.0.xxxx means - WITHOUT PATCH 1.4
Value: 1.4.xxxx means - WITH PATCH 1.4
If your DVD version is without PATCH 1.4, you may download the original patch 1.4 for free
from the UBI website here:

Advice: Both in the forums mentioned patch names (1.4 und 1.4b) refer to the same patch

Check for STARFORCE

Value: 1.0.0xxx means - WITH STARFORCE
Value: 1.0.1xxx means - WITHOUT STARFORCE
Value: 1.4.0xxx means - WITH STARFORCE
Value: 1.4.1xxx means - WITHOUT STARFORCE

SH3 Installation
Place your SH3 DVD into your drive and follow the instructions. If the AUTORUN window is not shown, start Windows Explorer, navigate to your DVD drive and start the
AUTORUN.EXE manually. Please mind that the following pictures may differ concerning your DVD version and operating system.
Choose the right language for your game.
Accept the license agreement with CONTINUE >
Windows XP: Accept the given destination folder at

C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\ and CONTINUE >
Very Important: for Windows 7 and VISTA the game must not be installed
into the given destination folder!
Therefore click BROWSE and create a folder outside of C:\Program Files\ for
example:
C:\Games\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\! or
"D:\Games\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\..." if there are more drives available!
Accept the recommended choice and click CONTINUE >
Agree to the suggested program folder for the start menu and CONTINUE >
The game will now be installed. This may take up to 20 minutes.
Concerning your DVD Version there may appear a window GAMESHADOW Installation-
Wizzard.
GameShadow is an out-dated tool and NOT necessary to play SH3!
Therefore you may CANCEL all questions concerning its installation.
After finishing the installation the UBI registration dialogue appears.
We suggest not to register at the moment and to click OK.
The SH3 installation is completed when the configuration window is displayed. Even
with the newest systems the recommend settings will show incorrect or incomplete
values. Just ignore this information of the out-aged program.
!!! IMPORTANT if you have a DVD with STARFORCE!!!
Do NOT start the game now because this will activate STARFORCE for your
PC! SH3 will not work with STARFORCE and Windows 7 / VISTA!
We recommend for all users who bought a legal version of SH3 to install the
No-DVD/Fixed EXE, to make STARFORCE inoperative.
With this fixed exe SH3 can be played with all Windows versions, without a
DVD inserted into the drive!

Copy the content of the packet into the game folder, where five files will be replaced.
Afterwards SH3 can be played without an activated STARFORCE!
Now start the game for the first time!

This first start may take up to 10 minutes!
For Windows XP only:

However if you want to activate STARFORCE ignore the above given advice and start
the game. Enter the key-code of your SH3 DVD in the dialog shown at game start.
SH3 will start now.

Checking patch-version in game

You can verify the installed patch-version in the main menus lower right corner.
Make sure that PATCH 1.4 is installed!
If PATCH 1.4 is not installed, exit the game and download and install the original
SH3 patch from UBI (20MB) at:

Advice: Both in the forums mentioned patch names (1.4 und 1.4b) refer to the
same patch version 1.4.
Just install the PATCH 1.4 into the SH3 game folder.
Check the game settings

Click OPTIONS and choose your in game text, dialogue and keyboard language.
Click APPLY to save the settings.
The game has got be to restarted to activate the new settings.
Installation test
To make sure the fresh installation of SH3 functions flawlessly and may not be the reason for errors or game crashes at a later date with an activated SuperMod, you
should start the game now. Start a short CAREER or a SINGLE MISSION. The selection of SHIPS & AIRPLANES is another good way to test the operability. It may take you
up to 20 minutes until you enter the U-Boat.
When the right patch version is shown and the game works without any errors, exit the game and restart the computer!
Advice: If you intend to use multiple SH3 installations in the future (e.g. for other SuperMods) this would be a good time to make a copy of the complete
installation folder \Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\ to a save place! This copy of the game can be taken instead of further new installations from DVD. For further
information concerning multiple SH3 installations and the necessary tool MultiSH3 (included in the LSH3 V5.1 packet) see page 22.
LSH3 V5.1 Download

The all in all data volume of LSH3 V5.1 is 4.5 GB. For faster downloads we deliver the LSH3V5.1 files in a compressed installation packet.
Important: Downloads running more than 1 hour, will be aborted by our webserver (automatically and without further notice). If this happens the file will not be
complete and therefore is corrupted. Therefore choose the download variant appropriate for your DSL speed!
DSL-Download variants
The SuperMod Living Silent Hunter III V5.1 can be downloaded for free at: http://www.lsh3.com (page DOWNLOAD)
Choose the appropriate download variant appropriate for your DSL speed. New LSH3 players require the FULLVERSION file packet:
- LSH3 V5.1 FULLVERSION, subdivided into eight smaller parts - download for normal DSL connections up to DSL-4000 KBit/sec.
- LSH3 V5.1 FULLVERSION, as one large file-packet - download for fast DSL connections for DSL-6000 KBit/sec or higher.
If you already have an error free SH3 installation with LSH3 V5 then download the UPDATE packet.
- LSH3 V5.1 UPDATE, , subdivided into three smaller parts - download for normal DSL connections up to DSL-4000 KBit/sec.
- LSH3 V5.1 UPDATE as one large file-packet - download for fast DSL connections for DSL-6000 KBit/sec or higher.
Starting the download

If you play LSH3 for the first time you will need the LSH3 V5.1 FULLVERSION packet:
- For normal DSL connections the eight FULLVERSION packets LSH3_V5.1_FULLVERSION.EXE.bat, as well as the seven part files
LSH3_V5.1_FULLVERSION_1.EXE.efs to LSH3_V5.1_FULLVERSION_7.EXE.efs
- For faster DSL connections the large FULLVERSION packet LSH3_V5.1_FULLVERSION.EXE
If you already have an error free SH3 installation with LSH3 V5 then download the UPDATE packet.
- For normal DSL connections the three UPDATE packets LSH3_V5.1_UPDATE.EXE.bat, as well as the three part files
LSH3_V5.1_UPDATE_1.EXE.efs and LSH3_V5.1_UPDATE_2.EXE.efs
- For faster DSL connections the large UPDATE packet LSH3_V5.1_UPDATE.EXE
We recommend downloading the file/s directly with your browser. Disconnected downloads will mostly not be resumed automatically. Therefore we do not approve the
usage of separately installed download managers. If the download does not complete successfully try the alternative download server 2 or try it again, maybe at
another time (e.g. at night).In individual cases we send you LSH3V5.1 via mail packet contact us by e-mail at: team@lsh3.com.
Important: The file packages have to be downloaded into the same folder, to secure that the assembly of the installable .EXE will be free from defects!
A hint: We suggest not to save the downloaded files to your desktop. Choose a folder within My Documents. This will reduce the time to start your computer because
the large downloaded file/s will not have to be loaded.
Check the downloaded file/s

When the download is finished the file/s should be checked for possible download errors. An easy way to do this is to compare the file size!
The downloaded packet must have exactly the same file size in KB as the original. The real file size is shown in Windows Explorer exclusively in the detail-view in
the column SIZE.

Assembly of the FULLVERSION file packets

This step will only be necessary if you downloaded the LSH3 V5.1 FULLVERSION divided into eight parts!
Make sure all file packets are within the same folder.
Start the assembly by double-clicking the file LSH3_V5.1_FULLVERSION.EXE.BAT, or LSH3_V5.1_UPDATE.EXE.BAT
For Windows 7 / VISTA the file has to be executed with the rights of an Administrator (right-click > RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR)!
The following dialogue box will temporarily be shown (Example: FULLVERSION).
This procedure may take up to 5 minutes and then the dialogue box will be
closed automatically.
When the assembly is done there will be the

LSH3_V5.1_FULLVERSION.EXE, or the LSH3_V5.1_UPDATE.EXE
installation file.
This file will be located in the same folder as the eight split files.
LSH3 V5.1 Installation

The installation of LSH3 V5.1 will not change or overwrite any existing data on your computer!
Four new folders will be created and the actual JSGME program files will be copied. These changes will only affect the SH3 program folder.
either - FULLVERSION - for LSH3 novices

Start the installation with a double-click at the file LSH3_V5.1_FULLVERSION.EXE.
For Windows 7 / VISTA the file has to be executed with the rights of an Administrator (right-click > RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR)!
or - UPDATE - for LSH3 V5 players

If you want to install the LSH3 V5.1 UPDATE, you will first HAVE TO DEACTIVATE ALL (!) activated MODs, before executing the install exe!
The LSH3 V5.1 UPDATE includes the old and new additional mods for LSH3 V5.1, therefore we advise to delete all old LSH3 V5 additional mods within the JSGME
MODS folder except the LSH3 V5 main mod (_LSH3_V5) this one has to be kept!
Start the installation with a double-click at the file LSH3_V5.1_UPDATE.EXE.

For Windows 7 / VISTA the file has to be executed with the elevated rights of an Administrator (right-click > RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR)!
Important: In the installation window (7-Zip self-extracting archive) you will first have to select the destination folder for LSH3-installation!
Therefore click the button and choose the destination folder where to install
LSH3!
If SH3 is properly installed, the destination folder will be

for XP: C:\Programme\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII
for WINDOWS 7 / VISTA: C:\Games\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\ or
"D:\games\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\..."
Then click on the button EXTRACT to start the installation process.
Depending on your computers speed the installation procedure may take up to an hour!
LSH3 V5.1 Activation with the JSGME

All LSH3 V5.1 mods will be activated with the GENERIC MOD ENABLER by JoneSoft (shortly JSGME).
After the installation of LSH3 V5.1, JSGME is already preinstalled and does NOT have to be installed separately.
If you did an accurate installation you will find JSGME.EXE by Windows Explorer in the \SilentHunterIII\ installation folder.
Advice: Because you may use JSGME periodically, we advice to create a shortcut on your desktop!
Select the file JSGME.EXE > right-click it and select > SEND TO > and then > DESKTOP (create Shortcut)
Now start JSGME for the first time
For Windows 7 / VISTA start the shortcut with rights as an

Administrator (right-click > RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR)
Only in the case of this first start this selection dialogue for the folder where the
MODS are stored will be displayed.
Accept the given folder name with a click at OK. Now JSGME starts.
Check now if all 32 new LSH3 V5.1 Mods are present!

On the left side there are the new LSH3 V5.1 Mods listed, as well as the LSH3
V5 MainMod, in the second place.
Attention: Not by any means do activate ALL THE Mods at once the
game would not work!
First activate the LSH3 V5 MainMod _LSH3_V5!

Select _LSH3_V5 on the left side and click the button >.
It may take up to 10 minutes to activate this Mod!
Second activate LSH3 V5.1 Mod _LSH3_V5.1 next!

During this process, some of the files activated with LSH3 V5 will be overwritten.
Therefore JSGME warns you to activate this Mod. Because they shall be replaced
by the newer version of LSH3V5.1 click the button YES.
When both _LSH3_V5 and _LSH3_V5.1 below are listed on the right side
the activation is completed. Exit JSGME now.
Tipp: It would be a good idea for a further test to start the game now without
any further Mod activated!
Some of the LSH3 V5.1 additional mods have to be activated in a defined
order, even some of the Mods (e.g. ATM and ENV) are not to be activated at
the same time. Read more concerning MOD-Activation in LSH3_V5.1_MOD-
Activation_DE.pdf (see SH3 installation folder at \_LSH3_V5.1_MANUALS\).
Now the 4GB-PATCH has to be executed (see the next page), NOT TILL
THEN LSH3 V5.1 is ready to be started!
4GB-PATCH Installation for all Windows-versions

Nowadays all(!) Windows operating systems do need the 4GB-PATCH to be applied, to be able to play SH3/4/5 with current SH3-Supermods on old and
new Computers without system crashes! For an effective appliance of the 4GB-PATCH exactly follow these given advice! The procedure necessary for your Windows
version is described in the table below:

If you downloaded and installed LSH3 V5.1 (as described before), the 4GB-PATCH is already on your hard disk. In the SH3-installation folder, at
\_LSH3_V5.1_TOOLS\4GB_Patch\ - the file 4GB_PATCH.EXE! Download available at http://ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php.
4GB-PATCH - For Windows 7 / VISTA:

The 4GB_PATCH.EXE has to be executed with the rights of an Administrator (right-click > RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR) > navigate to the SH3-installation folder > and
select the file SH3.EXE > click OK.
4GB-PATCH - Activation with Windows XP:

Execute 4GB_PATCH.EXE > navigate to the SH3-installation folder > and select the file SH3.EXE > click OK.
For ALL Windows versions: the 4GB-PATCH has been applied succesfully if you if you can find a file named sh3.exe.Backup in your SH3-installation
folder!
For all Windows 64 Bit Systems there are no further measures necessary! For all Windows 32 Bit Systems with 3GB or more the following steps are required:

Command entered in the console: start the console-window (dos-box) as an Administrator > enter the command appropriate for your amount of system
memory and press ENTER.
for 3 GB system memory command: bcdedit /set increaseuserva 2700

for 4 GB system memory command: bcdedit /set increaseuserva 2900
Measure (c) just for XP 32 bit

Entry in file boot.ini: right-click the symbol MY COMPUTER and select PROPERTIES > change to the register ADVANCED > at START AND RECOVER click the button
SETTINGS > in new window click on button EDIT > now boot.ini opens in editor > A new entry has to be added to the file.
Copy JUST THE LAST LINE ( beginning with multi(0)disk) and paste it below. Add one of the following entries at the end:
for XP 32 Bit with 3 GB system memory: /PAE /3GB /USERVA=2700 IMPORTANT: Keep in mind the space in front of the text!
for XP 32 Bit with 4 GB system memory: /PAE /3GB /USERVA=2900 IMPORTANT: Keep in mind the space in front of the text!
The screenshots below give an example (in this case: XP/32 with 4GB RAM), what the new entry in boot.ini may look like!
Attention: For each XP 32 bit user the line in the boot.ini may look different. Therefore the screenshots above show just one possible example.
This pictured text must not be copied into your boot.ini!
If the new line has been correctly appended with the correct entry, SAVE the boot.ini. After the next reboot Windows will display a boot menu with
two entries, Windows WITHOUT 4GB-Patch (as standard) and Windows WITH 4GB-Patch (as a selectable Option)!
LSH3 V5.1 First game start

Important: Make sure there is no folder \SH3\ within My Files. If so, delete the folder \SH3\!
For Windows 7 / Vista see in My Documents.
We urgently advise not to use saved games (career or SinglePlayer) from earlier LSH3 Versions!
Now start Living Silent Hunter III, using the SH3 shortcut , created during the SH3 installation from the desktop. This first start usually takes longer after a fresh
installation of SH3. Be patient. You may skip the intro videos by hitting the ESC-key.
SH3 with activated LSH3 V5.1 Supermod is loading correctly, LSH3 V5.1 is ready to play, if after the start procedure the

Verification of the game settings

Examine the LSH3 V5.1-game settings by clicking OPTIONS. Is the keyboard-layout correct for your language? The preset is ENGLISH. If required adjust the volume
settings at AUDIO. For older graphics adapters we suggest at VIDEO to deactivate the synchronization. The changes will be applied after a restart of the game.
Starting a Single mission

Get comfortable with LSH3 V5.1 by playing some single missions to activate the additional mods step by step. This is an easy way to get a survey about the effects of the
additional mods better than restarting a career every time.
Some of the LSH3 V5.1 additional mods have to be activated in a defined order, even some of the Mods (e.g. ATM and ENV) are not to be activated together. Read
more concerning MOD-Activation in LSH3_V5.1_MOD-Activation_DE.pdf (see SH3 installation folder at \_LSH3_V5.1_MANUALS\).
Starting a career
A career involves you in a war deployment as an U-Boot commander over the course of war from 1939 to 1945.
It may last over several months or even years, if you survive.
Generally speaking you should select the additional mods you want to use bevor starting your career.
Once you have started your career you should not change the JSGME mod list.
If necessary (e.g. additional mod because of change the u-boat-type), you will have to be in your base before changing the JSGME mod list.
If additional mods are de-/activated at sea this may lead to a CTD or total loss of your career!

LSH3 V5.1 Tools

The following selected SH3 tools (additional programs) are included in the LSH3 V5.1-packet and do not have to be downloaded separately.
The tools are available within your SH3 installation folder in the subfolder c:\Programme\Ubi\SilenttHunterIII\_LSH3_V5.1_TOOLS\...
DX9HiResFix
This tool can be activated like an additional mod via JSGME. It changes the screen resolution for all Windows operating systems to 1280x1024 Pixel.
The screen resolution quality increases for all views, especially the 3D-views (periscope, UZO, free camera) considerably, compared to the original SH3 resolution
1024x768px!
Important: The DX9HiResFix is designed for screen formats of 4:3 and allows a proportional higher resolution only on 4:3 displays!
The DX9HiResFix will work for Widescreen displays (format 16:9/16:10). But the appearance will look somewhat horizontally stretched. At this time there is no optimal
solution for a distortion-free view for widescreen monitors.
The usage of the tool DX9HiResFix is quite easy and can be done by JSGME:
- for Windows 7 / VISTA: Activate the mod _DX9HiResFix in JSGME
- for XP: 1. Activate the mod _DX9HiResFix in JSGME

2. Start once the file DX9HiResFix_REG.bat. (Use DX9HiResFix_UNREG.bat if you get any problems with other graphics apps)
The tool _DX9HiResFix can be turned on and off every time by JSGME, independent of any other additional mod!
Important for SH3 mission designers: Before starting the SH3 Missioneditor the tool _DX9HiResFix should be deactivated!
4GB-PATCH
Nowadays all(!) Windows operating systems do need the 4GB-PATCH to be applied, to be able to play SH3 with current SH3-Supermods on old and new
Computers without system crashes! If you installed LSH3 V5.1 (as described above), the 4GB-PATCH is already on your hard disk. In the SH3-installation folder, at
\_LSH3_V5.1_TOOLS\4GB_PATCH > the file 4GB_PATCH.EXE! Download is available at: http://ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php. For an effective appliance
of the 4GB-PATCH exactly follow the given advice at page 16!
JSGME (GENERIC MOD ENABLER)

The GENERIC MOD ENABLER by JonesSoft (JSGME) is already preinstalled in the LSH3 V5.1-Installation packet and does not have to be installed separately.
If you intend to use SH3Commander fr LSH3 V5.1 a separate installation of the JSGME will be necessary.
For this purpose the Original JSGME-Installation files are kept in the tools folder at \_LSH3_V5.1_TOOLS\JSGME
For further information please read the installation instructions for the SH3Commander for V5.1 in the folder: \_LSH3_V5_TOOLS\SH3Commander.
SH3Commander for LSH3 V5.1

SH3Commander allows to make deep changes to the game and is not only dedicated to the ambitious SH3-Player. Some of the possible changes are amongst others
Adjusting the crew (e.g. Medals, Abilities), Start outside the harbour, Adjust days in base, Change your destination PQ, Create an extended mission
report and much more. Storage location and Installation instructions in the folder: \_LSH3_V5_TOOLS\SH3Commander.
SetKeys
SetKeys is a helpful Tool, to change the existing shortcuts of the game or to add new commands to your preferred keys.
The tool SetKeys and the Installation instructions are available in the folder: \_LSH3_V5_TOOLS\ SetKeys.
MultiSH3
MultiSH3 enables you to use multiple Versions of SilentHunterIII, on the same computer.
MultiSH3 makes it possible to use separate storage location for the saved games in your folder My Files for each SH3-Installation a.
This tool should be used if you decide to play with different SuperMODs e.g. LSH, WAC or GWX, and maybe a pure SH3 for MultiPlayer games.
The tool MultiSH3 and further Installation instructions are stored in the folder: \_LSH3_V5_TOOLS\ MultiSH3.
The 7z-Archivprogramm
Most of the mods presented in the forums are packed for download in the format 7z. To unpack 7z-files
without any error, you will need the archive-program 7z.
We advise NOT to unpack 7z-files with other archive-programs (e.g. WinACE, WinRAR). The files will be
faulty in most cases.
The actual version of the 7z-Archive-program can be downloaded for free here:
http://www.7-zip.de/ .
After the installation of 7z start the program and check the following settings at OPTIONS:
If not already adjusted check 7-Zip link with: 7z! Restart your computer now! Thus you will
make sure that in the future 7z-files are opened via double click by the 7z-programm.
Archive files can be packed by the producer in different ways and can be unpacked by the user in even
more different ways. In practice these circumstances again and again result in unrequested folders within
the unpacked folder!
After unpacking 7z-Archive files you should always verify that within the unpacked folder only the desired
files are present. In case of a folder of the same name existing in the main folder USE the subfolder and
move its content one level higher!
