In this article, authors Andre and Jenny are explaining how domestic violence and its

victims should fall under human right standards. The problem is that many law enforcement see

DV as a family matter to be resolved within the home and not as an HR violation. After a law

suit filed against the U.S. the IACHR gave recommendations to the U.S. on the laws and policies

with the matter of DV and that it is a very big issue. People need to be held responsible and it is a

global issue. This is important to my article because reform and laws are necessary so domestic

violence can decrease and it needs to be treated as a very grave issue because it could lead to

death.

Barocas, Briana, et al. Changing the Domestic Violence Narrative: Aligning Definitions and

Standards. Journal of Family Violence, vol. 31, no. 8, 25 Oct. 2016, pp. 941947. Health

In this article, the authors are discussing how domestic violence needs to be handled. It

needs to be punished and addressed and change is needed when victims come forward. As stated
Burneo-Khan 2

in the article, Within the domestic violence, field, court-mandated offender treatment is an area

primed for innovation. Perpetrators should get treatment and sessions to deal with their problems

and handle it. The authors try out different research experiments to further back up their data

like for example, including the victim in a treatment approach with the offender in a safe way.

This supports my topic because different approaches and treatments to offenders could change

the path for domestic violence and decrease it even.

In this study, we see how physicians intervene with victims of domestic violence by

carrying out different methods on them. To make it easier to treat patients that have been

battered doctors need to know how to deal with this kind of situation and assess it. It can be

difficult dealing with victims of domestic violence as stated in the article. Even these physicians

reported sometimes feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, and incompetent regarding their role in

domestic violence cases. When the doctors intervened with their patience carrying out this study

they tried different techniques like giving reassuring and validating messages. This shows like

my topic of choice just how impactful domestic violence can be on a person and just how

damaging it is to a person as well. Domestic violence makes victims feel so weak they do not

know how to act or trust in anyone.

In Charlottes article, she writes about how Obama wants officials of federal agencies to

develop policies to address the ramifications of domestic violence. Vice President Joe Biden

also makes people aware to the fact that we should all be mindful to the fact that it can extend to

outside of home and have very unfavorable effects on victims. The memo sent out to federal

agencies will assure them they are not exempt to from being a victim of domestic violence and if

faced with this issue support is always available. This article also writes about how steps can be

taken to prevent it from escalating to the worst possible scenario. Many people were very pleased

with the Presidents agenda of signing a memorandum so it is a step forward in the right

direction in this matter. This article is by far the most substantial to my topic because it shows

that even the former President of the United States knew light had to be shed and people needed

to know that this is a real issue and concern and needs to be handled with the right care and

treatment. Abuse of any kind will not be tolerated especially domestically where a persons

home is supposed to be their sanctuary with domestic abuse it becomes their worst nightmare.

No one is exempt from domestic abuse, it could happen to anyone so it is always important to

reassure people help is always there.

What Is Domestic Violence. Domestic Violence Main Page,

www.clarkprosecutor.org/html/domviol/what.htm.

The website explicitly gives background information on to what Domestic Violence

really is. It includes what to look for in an abuser or victim and symptoms of abuse as well. The

website details that Domestic Violence is a violent confrontation between family or household

members including then different kinds of abuse. The website also explains warning signs for
Burneo-Khan 4

someone who might end up becoming and abuser and what to be observant for. The behaviors an

abuser will show as well are listed on the website ranging from using jealousy and blame to

justify actions to using isolation. This website goes in depth on how victims can get help

which is perfect information and only provides further sustenance to my topic by showing that

help is always available no matter what. Whenever or wherever victims are highly encouraged to

find the proper help and assistance they need.

Wihbey, John. Domestic Violence and Abusive Relationships: Research Review. Journalist's

Resource, vol. 75, no. 3, 17 Aug. 2015, pp. 15., doi:10.1111/jomf.12018.

In this article by John Wihbey he is providing information like statistics and sample

experiments on women that endure or have been a victim to domestic violence by an intimate

partner. In reference to the amount of research on domestic violence Wihbey writes that it has

grown substantially over the past few decades. In his article, he gives information on what

percentage of women have experienced some form of physical or sexual abuse by an intimate

partner in their lifetime which is in 2010, 30.0% [95% confidence interval (CI) 27.8 to 32.2%]

of women aged 15 and over have.... Rates have decreased nonetheless over the past two

decades, especially with women who are educated and financially stable. This journal article

relates to my topic greatly, providing information and statistics to back up everything being said

and gives people a better insight on what the real percentages are of women affected by domestic

violence. Furthermore, strengthens my topic by showing what a serious social issue it still is in

todays society.

Women around Globe Feel Burden of Domestic Violence, Often at Home. Nations Health,

vol. 36, no. 1, Jan/Feb2006, p. 21.

In this particular article, the most important fact that was stated was a report released by

the World Health Organization report that mentioned how a study shows that women are more

at risk from violence at home than in the street, and this has serious repercussions for womens

health, said WHO Director-general Jong Wook Lee, MD, MPH. The article also points out that

domestic violence needs to be recognized globally and as a very grave societal issue. A lot of

times victims of abuse will not say anything so it remains hidden which can be problematic for

policy makers. The article also mentions how it needs to be prevented from happening to begin

with. This is such an important article because it continues to shed light on the fact that domestic

violence is a global issue and many times goes unrecognized within families because of fear, but

victims need to know they will be taken care of and need to speak to anyone about it.

In this periodical writer Catherine Wright describes the fourth annual Health Cares which

is about Domestic Violence Day which is a large event established by the Family Violence

Prevention Fund as part of its National Health Initiative on Domestic Violence. The event hosts

to health care providers, government officials, and more. Domestic violence is a silent epidemic

in our country today, Cristina Beato, MD, principal deputy assistant secretary for health at the

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said in an introduction to the ceremony. Based

off a study mentioned in the periodical in 1998 one out of three American women is physically

or sexually assaulted by a domestic partner during her lifetime. Another director of the annual

event always makes sure to let health care providers know to consistently ask patients if their
Burneo-Khan 6

environment and well-being is being threatened or harmed in any way by a partner. In the event

people are recognized and awarded for bringing awareness to the issue at hand. This article

supports my topic of domestic abuse and violence by detailing awareness continually needs to be

raised and healthcare providers and just regular working people as well, or anyone can do

something to make sure someone he or she may know is safe and okay with their domestic

partner. Awareness needs to continuously be brought to this societal issue.
