Numerical to Practice t-test

1. In a study of abstract reasoning, a sample of 83 twelfth-grade boys and a sample of 95 twelfth-

grade girls scored as following:

Sex N Mean SD
Girls 95 29.21 11.58
Boys 83 30.92 7.81

Assuming that our samples are random; would further test of similar groups of boys and girls give
virtually the same result?

2. Given are the scores from two randomly drawn samples of boys and girls on a class test. Based on
these samples can you infer if these exists any significant difference in the performance of the
population group of boys and girls in this test?

3. We know from experience that intensive coaching increases reading skills. At the end of a school
year, Class A, which had received special coaching, averaged 5 points higher on a reading test
than Class B, which had received no coaching. The standard error of this class difference was 3.
Is the gain significant?
4. At the beginning of school year, the mean score of a group of 64 sixth-grade children upon an
educational achievement test in reading was 45.00 with SD of 6.00.at the end of the school year,
the mean score on an equivalent form of the same test was 50.00 with SD 5.00. The correlation
between scores made on the initial and final testing was 0.60. Has the class made significant
progress in reading during the years?
5. Two groups, X and Y of seventh-grade children, 72 in each group, are paired for child for age and
score on Form A an Intelligence test. Three weeks later both groups are given Form B of the
same Intelligence test. Before the second test, the experimental group is praised for its
performance on the first test and urged to try to better its score. The control group is given these
cod test without comment. Will the praise cause the scores of the group to differ significantly?

6. The achievement of two groups of first-year high-school boys, the one from academic and the
other from a technical high school, is compared on a non-scholastic performance test. The two
groups are matched for mean and SD upon a general intelligence test so that the experiment
becomes one of comparing the non-scholastic aptitude scores of two groups of boys of equal
general intelligence enrolled in different courses of study. Do the two groups differ in mean
ability?

7. A researcher is interested to know the awareness towards health hazards of people towards a
plant. Thirty patients were randomly selected to participate in the study. Half were given a plant
to care for and half were given a plant but the care was conducted by the staff. Number of health
complaints was recorded for each patient over the following seven days. Compute the appropriate
t-test for the data provided below.

a. What would be the null hypothesis in this study?
b. What would be the alternate hypothesis?
c. What probability level did you choose and why?
d. What are your degrees of freedom?
e. Is there a significant difference between the two groups?
f. If you have made an error, would it be a Type I or a Type II error? Explain your answer.

8. A researcher obtained t =3.68 between mean number of hours of study by M.Ed. students and
mean number of kilometers M.Ed. students travel to the University for attending classes in a week
(n1 = 37, n2 = 37, = 0.05, one-tailed test). Do you agree with the nature of test the researcher
chose for this study? Justify. Write a statement of inference for the researcher.
9. Bullying observed to be on increase among high school students. A student-researcher obtained a
score on experience of being bullied among random samples of students as given below. Her
research hunch was that bullying is occurring more in Private schools and than in Government
schools. Make inference by testing her hypothesis at 0.01 level.
