Preventing Cancer: An Annotated Bibliography

My survey asked four questions. 1) Are there effective ways that YOU KNOW of to

prevent cancer? 2) Have you or someone you know experienced cancer? 3) What type of

cancer? 4) What did the doctor say caused this? Thirty-four, and counting, people have

responded to the survey. They would specifically tell the type of cancer that was

experienced and what caused it and if that cancer was preventable. They would also

explain ways that they know would prevent or lower risks of cancer. I believe my survey

is a good credible source, because local people who have experienced or know anyone

who has experienced cancer wrote out the cause of their cancer, the type, and preventable

actions if there was any.

Harris, J. R. et al. (2005). The Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network. Preventing

Chronic Disease, 2(1), A21.

Retrieved from https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1323324/

In this peer-reviewed article on cancer prevention, it lists the top four cancers that are

affected in people and how it affects certain ethnic groups more than others. Also, this

article lists behavioral actions that can help prevent or lower your risk of cancer overall.

For example, less smoking, more screening opportunities to detect the cancer early, and

being engaged in cancer prevention can all help prevent and lower your risk of getting

cancer. Another topic this article mentions is needing the expansion of cancer research in

public health facilities and clinical practice settings. This source is credible for my

research, because it mentions many actions and different ways to prevent and lower your

risks of getting cancer and if these actions are proven to be effective.

Howell, A. et al. (2014). Risk determination and prevention of breast cancer. Breast Cancer

Research. 16(5). 1. Retrieved from: https://doi.org/10.1186/s13058-014-0446-2

In this peer-reviewed article on Breast Cancer Research it explains the risk determination

and prevention of breast cancer. Even though this article focuses more on breast cancer, I

will mention certain types of cancer and explain how to prevent and lower your risks of

getting each cancer that is mentioned. Advances have been made in breast cancer

treatment, but preventing the disease has been unsuccessful. However, 50% of breast

cancer victims cancer can be prevented by chemoprevention and lifestyles such as

exercising, weight, and drinking alcohol in moderation by almost 30%. In fact, most

countries are increasing their risk of cancer from late first pregnancies, later menopause,

and lower age of menarche. Even hereditary cancer has increased over the years. Also,

the article shows the methods of lowering risks by developing a machine to detect a

mutation probability of having the mutation. They explain the mammographic density

test shows breast cancer more than other tests. This article also mentions the hormone
measurements and other methods. This peer-reviewed article is a good source, because it

thoroughly explains how to prevent breast cancer through lifestyle actions,

chemoprevention, weight control, alcohol intake, and physical activity. Also, it explains

reducing estrogen to the breast, early pregnancy, and menopause.

The MNT editorial team. (2016, March, 30). Cancer: Facts, Causes, Symptoms and Research.

Medical News Today. Retrieved from http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/info/cancer-

oncology

In this newspaper article from Medical News Today, I received information about what is

cancer, some individual types of cancer, facts about cancer, how cancer spreads

throughout the body, causes of cancer, genes and other medical factors. This article will

also let you learn about the individual cancers and the symptoms, causes, definition, etc.

For example, liver cancer consists of tumor growths in or on the liver. Symptoms of liver

cancer includes: abdominal pain, vomiting, fatigue, general itching, and fever. Causes of

liver cancer may include: consumption of steroids (mainly used by athletes), diabetes,

family history and obesity. A way to detect this cancer is through imaging scans (MRI).

A way of treatment is to have a liver transplant or surgery. This newspaper article is a

credible source to use for my research because it explains each type of cancer and all the

facts you need to know about them individually and with that information I can explain

how to reduce your risk, prevent the cancer and the tests you can run to catch cancer

early.

The 10 commandments of cancer prevention.Harvard Health Publications.(2009, April).

Retrieved from https://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletter_article/The-10-

commandments-of-cancer-prevention
This newspaper article about the 10 commandments of cancer prevention by the Harvard

Medical School Newspaper, lists ten simple ways to prevent cancer. The ten

commandments include: Avoid tobacco, eat properly, exercise regularly, stay lean, limit

alcohol intake to two drinks a day, avoid unnecessary exposure to radiation, avoid

environmental toxins, avoid infections that contribute cancer, take low-dose of aspirin,

and get enough vitamin D. After each commandment, it follows with an example and

answer to why you should follow these rules. Also, this article includes a risk factor chart

and the percentage of cancer deaths. In fact, 2.4 million of the worlds 7 million cancer

deaths were blamed on nine preventable risk factors. For example, smoking and tobacco

use is 30% of the cancer deaths. Another way to prevent cancer or catching it super early

is get regular check ups and screening tests that can detect cancer before any symptoms

occur. However, some symptoms can be followed by the word CAUTION. Which stands

for Change in bowel or bladder habits, A sore that does not heal, Unusual bleeding or

discharge, Thickening or lump the breast, Indigestion or difficulty swallowing, Obvious

change in warts or moles, and Nagging cough. This article is a reliable and credible

source because it comes from one of the best schools in the country and gives simple tips

in ways to prevent cancer through simple actions.

Don't forget to organize the sources in alphabetical order. Also, if a source does not have an
author, you would include the title of the article first in the citation. All other citations are
formatted correctly and each annotation thoroughly explains the source, how it is credible, and
how you plan to use it. Very good.
