1.

An airplane traveling at 100 m/s in horizontal direction drops a bomb from a

height of 1500 m above the ground as shown on Fig. 1.1. Given the gravitational
acceleration is 9.8 m/s2, find the time of flight of the bomb, horizontal distance
traveled by the bomb, and the velocity components as the bomb strikes the
ground.

velocity components:

vertical component: = . = 0 (9.8 m/s2 17.496 ) = 171.5 m/s
(minus sign means the velocity is pointing downward).

ADDITIONAL: in case we want to find the resultant velocity of the bomb just when it
hits the ground, we can apply:

= 2 + 2 = 1002 + 171.52 = 198.5 m/s

2. A car, of mass 1100 kg, is being towed by a truck from rest, along a straight
horizontal road as shown in Fig. 2.1.

Fig. 2.1

a) The car is constantly accelerated by 0.7 m/s2.

(i) Estimate how long it takes to reach the velocity of 20 m/s?
20 m/s - 0
= = = 28.6

(ii) The only horizontal forces acting on the car are the tension in the tow
bar and a resistive force. Given the resistive force is 125 N, what is the
tension in the tow bar?
= .
= .
therefore,
= . + = (1100 kg 0.7 m/s2 ) + 125 N = 895 N

b) After it reached the velocity of 20 m/s, the car moves with constant velocity for
1 minute. Calculate the distance travelled during this period of time.
= = 20 m/s 60s = 1200 m

4. Tony Hawk once again in competition, pushes the ground 500.0 N to move his
skateboard forward along a horizontal surface.

negligible, calculate the nett force acts on him.
