About Wayanad
Wayanad, which is also known as the green paradise lies in between the mountains of the
Western Ghats. It is called the green paradise because it forms the border of the greener
portion of Kerala. It lies at a distance of 76 km from Kozhikode.
Wayanad district is located on the southern tip of the Deccan plateau and in the north-eastern
part of Kerala. It is at a short distance from popular tourist destinations like Ooty, Kannur,

History of Wayanad
Wayanad is spread over an area of 2132 sq km and includes three talukas, namely,
Mananthavady, Sulthan Bathery and Vythiri. The headquarters of the district is situated at
Kalpetta. Wayanad District was formed on November 1, 1980 as the 12th district. It has been
formed from the Kozhikode and Kannur districts. Wayanad means 'Land of Paddy Fields'.
Wayanad has a rich history and the hills of Wayanad have several evidences of the New Stone
Age civilisation. There are pictures and pictorial writings on the walls of both the caves of
Ampukuthimala, which lie between Sulthan Bathery and Ambalavayal, that provide crucial
information about the past era and civilisation.
In ancient times, Wayanad was under the rule of the kings of the Veda tribe. Later its control
came into the hands of the Pazhassi Rajahs of the Kottayam Royal Dynasty. After becoming
the king of Mysore, Hyder Ali invaded this land and brought it under his control. However, it
went back to the Kottayam Royal Dynasty during the reign of Tipu Sultan.
Numerous changes were seen in Wayanad, after it came under the British rule. Tea and other
cash crops were cultivated in the plateau and roads were also built from Kozhikode and
Thalassery, across the risky slopes of Wayanad.
Things to do in Wayanad
Today Wayanad is a popular tourist destination in Kerala with numerous attractions such as

Travelling to Wayanad
Wayanad is well connected by road, rail and air. Kozhikode serves as the closest airport and
railway station to reach Wayanad, at a distance of 98 km. Wayanad is well connected by roads
from Kozhikode, Kannur, Ooty and Mysore. There are regular bus services from major cities like
Bangalore, Chennai and Trivandrum up to Kozhikode. From here tourists can hire cabs or
board bus to reach their destination.
Trip Cost - Economical, excluding the mode you choose to reach Kozhikode.
Food - Typical mallu food including Fish and Beef & economical.
Shopping - Nothing.
The trip begins - It was a 1. 5 hrs flight to Kozhikode from Mumbai wch landed at 11 AM.
DAY 1:
The journey started from the airport in a car, the weather was hot, although a little greenery
along the way but it's more like a developing concrete city. All boards written in english and
malayalam language. It also drizzled a bit.
Our first stop was at the foot hill (adivaram) of Wayanad and it took us 1. 5 hrs to reach here.
Name of the place was Pull Anjimedu. We had our brunch at a local hotel wch turned out to be
the best food joint we discovered, find below pic of the authentic mallu food, we also had 3
varieties of fish, beef and chaas.
The sightseeing had started on our way to hotel and we covered the following places on Day 1:
1. stop was lakkidi view point, nothing new but the road view was good.
2. stop, chain tree - there is a story revolving around it, you won't need more then 5 min to see
this.
3. pookot lake - boating, aquarium and fish spa, the most economical fish spa you'll find here
only Rs. 50.
We reached out hotel and in the evening went out exploring the street food, we had Beef /
Chicken with malabar paratha, the taste was OK.
DAY 2:
Jain Temple Road Map
1. Jain temple - just an archaeologist thing, stupid to include this in your sightseeing, it can be
explored during the evening while walking also.
After seeing the temple we left for kuruva island and the route was just superb. Name of the
Road was sultan bathery to pulp alley. Amazing one... Its carved between the forest... With lush
green trees and plants on both the sides of the road, no traffic and cool breeze, it's a paradise
for bikers.
2. kuruva island - the most idiotic thing to see and do here. It is nothing like island, do this only if
you have nothing to do. It was so disappointing that I don't have a good pic to share.
After our first day of sight seeing and kuruva island we were really disappointed with what
Wayanad had to offer us, until we changed the normal sight seeing plan and asked the driver to
take us Erika caves and that was the second best decision we tuk.
3. alkali caves, the second best things to do in Wayanad, it's a 340 steep climb but the view at
the top is worth it. It drizzled while we trekked up so we got an awesome view.
4. was Wayanad heritage museum & farm, the farm as the name suggests is a BIG garden with
variety if flower and birds. Its a good place if you go with kids or want to have a relaxed evening
just sitting and doing nothing.
Day 3:
Although it was not part of our itinerary but we made the changes and included this in our
itinerary and decided we would do this in the morning and then leave and this decision changed
our view from WAYANAD to WAYnotANAD!!
Chembra peak - we all we're very excited about it as we had read about it and it was a trek wch
turned out to be the most amazing thing to do in Wayanad... Your Wayanad is not Wayanad if
you done this. It's a trek between the mountains wch lead you to the highest but a v small lake
in Wayanad and man you gotta be there to experience this.
You have to come in quite a bit in your car/bike or hire a jeep, there is ticket counter, the price is
Rs. 700 for 1 to 10 people, so irrespective whether you are single or a group of 10 you'll be
charged same, so incase you are less people tag with someone there and share the cost.
You start the trek from a plain land with tea plantation on either side, and then the actual climb
begins, with steep steps, slippery rocks, naturally made way because of the river stream coming
down from the top hill, a 2. 5 km trek will take you a min of 1. 5 hrs to reach and lot of energy
and stamina, you'll probably be tried to the core and would want to give up mid way, but DON'T,
because the moment you reach up it gonna be worth every effort you had put in.
The view serene that you don't feel like getting up from there, cool and really fast breeze which
has the capacity to take you off your feet if you are standing at the edge and do not have
enough weight.
Trekking down won't take you long, prob half an hour or max 45 min.
The trek opens at 7 AM and shuts around 2 PM, and the best time is 7 or max by 8 so that you
don't get sun on your face when you reach the peak, we were lucky that it had rained the
previous day so or the more green we could see and even more lucky that it don't rain on the
day we trekked.
Wayanad is worth only if you do this trek and Erroll caves, it's OK if you skip everything else
because nothing more is really worth this." - Abhishek Anand, Mumbai, Jan 31, 2017

Over Rated Holiday Destination
"Well well, first things first. I had heard a lot about this place, being an ideal holiday destination,
but didn't quite meet my expectations. It's all about the Journey and not the destination- literally
holds true for this place. We drove all the way from Bangalore to Wayanad, which is approx 280
kms drive. And the drive, without any doubt was the best part of the holiday. The highway is well
maintained and surrounded by lush green landscapes, and forests on the either side of the
road. Once you cross the forest, you will be taken up by surprise by the sunflower fields on
either sides. We stopped just next to the fields and clicked lot of photographs.
It took us about 5-6 hrs to reach Wayanad, and the fact that it was nothing like a hill station
disappointed us. The weather was far from being a hill station weather, to be frank it was damn
hot, and so we decided to take some rest and spend time in the resort itself. Next day we
started early with visiting the coffee estates which I would say was some respite to us. Next we
decided to head to the Soochipara Fall. You have to walk about 2Kms from the parking place,
to reach the falls, and after covering all that distance you are just allowed to look at the waterfall
from a distance, ofcourse due to the safety concerns. There are some lake's as well, but for that
you need to trek another 2-3 kms and we were not in a mood for trekking another 2kms since it
was already evening, and so we decided to head back to our resort and spend some time in the
pool. Next day we started our journey back to Bangalore.
May be you can explore the city during Nov-Feb as the weather would be better during these
months, but still I won't recommend it at all." - Tinu Dalal, Bangalore, Mar 30, 2016
A refreshing change, since it is still untouched - relatively
"When you talk of Hill Stations in India, Wayanad may not be what comes to your mind right
away. It is not very well known to people and some may not know that it is in Kerala, since the
moment you hear Kerala, most think of only the back-waters.
But this hill district in the north eastern borders of Kerala is really a treat to the senses. You will
find this refreshing because it is not too touristy, while still being sufficiently well stocked and
connected for tourists owing to its location and strategic importance.
The Edakkal Caves in Wayanad is a must visit. This is a place in the hills where you will find
pre-historic paintings and markings on rocks. Truly remarkable. This place is located at a
distance of about 45 minutes from the town of Kalpetta and you can get there via shared Jeeps.
There are other attractions like cardamom plantations, coffee and tea plantations and the like, if
you are the sorts that is fascinated by botanical wonders.
When I visited Wayanad in the month of February, it was foggy in the mornings and the
temperature would go up to about 24 degrees in the afternoons. Overall, February and October
are the best times to be there." - Joby Abraham, Delhi, Mar 22, 2016
