From the President
With another SCC/MLA meeting behind me, Im reminded of what I like
best about being a part of this chapter: the people. The program and
local arrangements committees coordinated a great meeting, the
presenters contributed interesting content, and our vendors and
speakers gave us much to consider as we returned home. The
opportunity to meet our new members was an absolute pleasure I can
tell they are ready to jump in and continue the SCC/MLA traditions of
serving, sharing, and celebrating!

I would like to thank all of those who have served SCC/MLA so faithfully
Montie Dobbins
this past year. Our outgoing Executive Board and Committee Chairs built
SCC/MLA President
upon the firm foundation of our past leadership, and Im confident that
our incoming leadership will continue that good work. I am also grateful
for all of those who volunteered to serve on committees this year, as I know they are ready to
dig in and get to work. I know the members of the program and local arrangements committees
are already working on a great meeting for San Antonio!

I encourage each member to renew your membership. Without you, SCC/MLA cannot continue
to be the active and dynamic chapter it is. When you renew your membership, dont forget to
volunteer for a committee! There are plenty of exciting committees to serve on, and the work is
not only fun, but it forms the backbone of our chapter. There will be plenty of calls to volunteer
for a committee, so dont be shy about answering! I also invite our members to mentor those
who are new to our chapter. Help them get to know folks and make them feel welcome. Lets
learn one anothers stories, and build a better chapter together.

As we head into a new year, let us take advantage of every opportunity SCC/MLA offers. In
2018, we head to San Antonio, the site of the very first annual meeting of the South Central
Chapter of the Medical Library Association. While it is fun to reflect on our history, how much
more interesting it is to create a vital and vibrant future!

So dont forget:

Renew your membership!

Volunteer!
Save the date! October 19-24, 2018 in San Antonio, TX
Thanks for allowing me to serve!

Montie Dobbins
President-Elect

Membership renewals for 2018 are currently underway!

Update from the Treasurer

For those of you who may not be aware, I fell at the end of the annual meeting in Albuquerque,
which resulted in a torn quadriceps tendon on my right leg, and I had surgery on November 9 to
repair the injury. The surgery went very well, and I am currently recuperating in my apartment
since I am unable to put any weight on the knee for six weeks. I am able to work remotely, so I will
be able to respond to any questions.

Membership renewals for 2018 are currently underway, and everyone should have received the
initial email reminder about them on November 2. Officially, current memberships expires on
December 31, but anyone who has not renewed by that time will still have until February 28, 2018,
to renew for the 2018 calendar year.

If you wish to pay online with a valid credit card, all you need to do is select the Pay online
option and follow the on-screen instructions. Please note: The online payment processor (Stripe) is
currently validating submitted credit cards using the address and Zip code on file for the card along
with the security code, so if you get a message that the payment did not completely process, this is
why. If you have any questions or comments about this, please contact me immediately.

If you prefer to pay by check, you should select the Pay by invoice option, which will generate an
invoice that you may print out and send with your payment; the invoice will also be emailed to you
automatically. With my current situation, I may not be able to deposit the check as quickly as I
would otherwise, but I promise I will deposit them as soon as I can.

Jon Crossno
Treasurer

Special congratulations to the

lovely Barbara Crossno for her
dedication to her son and
SCC/MLA! She received an official
Certificate of Recognition from the
chapter, and there wasnt a dry eye
in the place during that
announcement!

2017 SCC/MLA Librarian of the Year
I want to express my appreciation and excitement to the SCC/MLA
for the prestigious Librarian of the Year Award. If I had had to name
two traits that defined my career, it would be a need for collegiality
and a thirst for knowledge. As a solo librarian, I had to reach out to
others I knew in similar positions so I could share the small triumphs
and large frustrations that come with creating your own place in a
hospital setting. My first call was to Helen Caruso, then at Slidell
Memorial, and from there, the idea of monthly calls with other
solos was born. As Helen and I shared professional practices and
new knowledge, we realized that, by expanding our base, we had a
better chance of offering services that increased our value to our
clinicians and ultimately to the patients our hospitals treated. Today every chat has three parts:
News, Help!, and Explore, and the support we offer each other is enlightening and invaluable.

Every librarian I have met, every meeting I have attended inspired me to do more, be better at
what I do, and share with others what I have learned. I never fully realized the impact of my
activities until Debbie Sibley called and I heard Shari Cliftons presentation. I am overwhelmed
with gratitude for this distinguished honor.

2017 SCC/MLA Distinguished Service Award Announcement
2017 Distinguished Service Award Recipient
Joy Summers-Ables
Director, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual who has

performed outstanding service to SCC/MLA and is the highest accolade
that the chapter bestows upon a member. Recipients are selected on
the basis of their contributions in measurable ways to Chapter
achievement and effectiveness.

A couple of quotes from the letters of recommendation written for this years recipient:

The recipients loyalty and dedication to the chapter has never faltered.

The recipients career has been lengthy and productive.

As for the recipients participation in SCC, didnt just do a lot of things but did a lot of things
extremely well.

I believe the term enthusiastic ambassador was also used.

The recipient has been a member of SCC for decades and has chaired or been a member of
nearly all the committees. The recipient has produced and/or collaborated on beaucoup SCC
papers and posters. The recipient is a distinguished member of AHIP. The recipient has served
as president of both HLIS and SCC.

Her contributions to the infrastructure of the organization are many. She is has kept us
technologically current and in touch by being our listserv manager since the beginning.

Oh one more quote The joy she brings to her work is infectious. I believe there was also a
quote about joi de vivre

I am very pleased to announce that Joy Summers-Ables is the 2017 Distinguished Service
Award recipient!

2017 Mayo Drake Scholarship Winners

As I flew into Albuquerque for the 2017 SCC/MLA

Annual Meeting, I was blown away by the beauty of
New Mexico. I had been there one time as a seven-
year-old child but had not been back since then.
However, the beauty of the mountains and inactive
volcanoes surrounding the city of Albuquerque was
just awe inspiring.
I am a graduate student in the Library and
Information Science program at the University of
Oklahoma, Tulsa, and I am one of the 2017 Mayo
Drake Scholarship Award recipients. I am honored to
have been asked to contribute to the South Central Connections newsletter about my
experiences at the 2017 Annual Meeting.

There are so many things that made the meeting so memorable to me. The venue was perfectly
set in historic Old Town Albuquerque, and the view from my 10th floor balcony was spectacular.
The Hotel Albuquerque and food were phenomenal! Oklahoma Tex Mex is good but not nearly
as flavorful as New Mexican food! I learned so much from the presentations, as well as the
guest speakers. I enjoyed Dr. Patriquins HLIS presentation, Mindful Meditation. It was very
calming, and I hope to continue that practice now that I am back home.

I think what really made the meeting so memorable was everyone that I met. My friend and
mentor, Anne Howard, was the best! She introduced me to so many great people, and we
talked about how she began with SCC/MLA and what the
chapter means to her. Annes encouragement
throughout my trip inspired me to attend many of the
social events and get to know other members. Dr. Dede
Rios was also a new, amazing friend. Her positivity and
energy brought such life to the event. She always
brightened my day. The new member reception was also
a great place to meet other new members, as well as
chapter officers. Throughout the meeting, I never felt like
a stranger or even a new member; I always felt welcome.
Thank You to the Local Arrangements Committee for
doing such an amazing job! I know there was a lot of
hard work that went into this years preparations. My hope is when I graduate this coming
spring that I will find a medical librarian position where I can stay apart of SCC/MLA and
hopefully come back next year for the 2018 SCC/MLA Annual Meeting in San Antonio.

Thank you for awarding me the Mayo Drake Scholarship, I appreciate
the opportunity to attend the 2017 SCC/MLA Annual Meeting and to
meet everyone. I was grateful for the opportunity to receive feedback
during the retreat as well as both attend and present at the conference
for the first time. Going to the poster presentations, listening to what
my colleagues are doing in their libraries, and learning their
perspectives on the profession was quite engaging. I appreciate the
support and feedback I received for my first presentation, and I was
able to gain some ideas about how to improve my project and
presentation. Attending the Grants and Proposal Writing Continuing
Education session presented by Bethany Livingston and Debbie
Montenegro, from the NNLM SCR helped develop ideas for moving
other projects forward. I feel the perspectives discussed during the different components of the
conference will help me become a better librarian.

Im thankful to my mentor, Julie Esparza, for her words of wisdom and perspective. Im also
grateful to Heather Moberly for encouraging this opportunity; and my supervisor, Esther
Carrigan, for her support.

This conference was an invaluable experience to learn more about medical librarianship and its
leadership and opportunities within the region. I look forward to seeing the SCC/MLA family
again in San Antonio.

SCC/SCAMEL Writing Retreat

This years writing retreat was phenomenal! As a novice writer, I benefited greatly by attending
the SCC/SCAMEL Writing Retreat! The mentors, Stewart Brower and Jack Bullion did an
awesome job setting the tone, choosing a spectacular writing space, and offering constructive
feedback of our work. The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library was such a
beautiful and serene place to create, and their staff were so helpful. Even the view from the
third floor of the balloons in the afternoon was just enough to inspire you to write more. I
learned so much from the cohort, and Im so motivated to keep writing. I highly recommend
this to anyone who is even remotely interested in becoming published. Write ON!

Conference in Motion: SCC/MLA 2017

The South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association (SCC/MLA) held its annual
conference in Albuquerques Old Town, October 13 17, 2017. This was the 5th time this event
has been hosted in Albuquerque, the other years being 2007, 1997, 1987, and 1974.
Hosting in October allowed us to take advantage of New Mexicos beautiful fall weather and
Albuquerques amazing Balloon Fiesta to highlight our theme The Skys the Limit, even if
there was a bus driver snafu on Saturday and too much wind for lift off on Sunday!
This year was also the debut of a push towards a paperless conference and a meeting app.
Survey feedback indicates that most of the membership supports this. We welcomed 151 total
registrants to the conference, a number of whom attended a special Outreach track put on the
wonderful people of the NNLM SCR, and funded by the NLM. We heard thought-provoking
presentations by Dr. Patti Brennan of the NLM and Siobhan Riordan of the Philadelphia Free
Library, meditated during the Hospital Library Interest Section (HLIS) Luncheon, and heard of all
the great work going on in the chapter during poster sessions, lightning talks, and
presentations.

Membership Committee
On behalf of the Membership Committee (MC) I want to share the following:

First Thanks to everyone who attended the New Members Reception in Albuquerque.
Everyone went out of their way to make new members feel welcome.

Second Please remember to renew your SCC membership and to update your profile
information in the membership database at the same time. Wild Apricot makes this very easy
and it means SCC has the most current information for our members.

Third Current members should have received an email (11-16-17) asking you to vote on the
new membership category. Approval of a new dues category for retirees was voted on and
approved at the Business Meeting so it now moves to the full membership for a vote. Thanks to
Jean Hillyer, MC Chair (2016-2017) for moving this proposal through the process. We hope this
new membership category will encourage continued participation and mentoring by retired
members. Please take a few minutes to give us a yea or nay.

Hospital Library Interest Section (HLIS) Update

I hope everyone had a good trip to Albuquerque and

got that home safely. If you did not attend, hope to
see you next year.

We had a great talk from Dr. Lara Patriquin about meditation and mindfulness. We even
engaged in some medication um meditation. Sorry, we were not recreating a scene from
Breaking Bad.

Welcome to our six new members if you attended or not.

The election results are in and congratulations to Tim Kenny President elect and Bob Bartlett
Secretary.

We also extend the call to any HLIS members that have any documents from the last decade (or
earlier) since we have large gaps in our digital archive. Therefore, if you are hoarding a full set
of HLIS luncheon programs or anything else (they will never fetch anything on Ebay) send us
scans so we can fill in the blanks.

Respectfully standing as submitted,

Newsletter Report
We would like to start out by giving a big shout-out to everyone involved with putting together
such an incredible meeting in Albuquerque. The Local Arrangements and Program Committees
did an amazing job. Special thanks to all the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library
and Informatics Center staff! Everyone was super helpful and hid their exhaustion well. Jacob
Nash and Steve Stockdale were the LAC MVPs for sure. They worked so hard, they really put the
you cant be in more than one place at the same time theory to the test. From the speakers
and presentations to the food and festivities, a great time was had by all! If you couldnt make
it this year, we highly recommend getting your plan together now to participate in next years
meeting in San Antonio. The 2018 LAC is already brewing up a great time, so watch for their
emails and calls for contributions over the next several months!

guidelines are available on web page. The guidelines definitely need to be revised, and we hope
to have that wrapped up by the next issue, which will be v.28, number 1, April 2018.

The newsletter isnt just for news. It provides an opportunity for members to get to know each
other. In just these first few issues, we have certainly learned a lot about you that we never

2018 Local Arrangements Committee

Join us in San Antonio! October 19-24, 2018

Mark your calendars and plan to join us for SCCs 45th annual meeting in October 2018. The
Local Arrangements Committee is excited to welcome everyone to an opening party hosted on
the grounds of the Alamo. Our meeting venue will be the historic Menger Hotel, located just

We will meet in San Antonio as the city celebrates its Tricentennial. Even if you have visited San
Antonio previously, there will be many new things to see throughout the year. History buffs
wont want to miss some of the special exhibits at the Witte Museum, including 300 Years of
San Antonio History: Confluence and Culture and Gathering at the Waters: 12,000 Years of
People. Or, kick back and relax as you enjoy one of the three new beers created in honor of

NNLM SCR Update

National Network of Libraries of Medicine South Central Region News

Time to Start Thinking About NNLM SCR Grants!

Were still a couple months away from opening up applications for 2018-2019 grants, but nows
the time for brainstorming, gathering partners, and asking us questions about new funding
opportunities, including one focused on disaster preparedness and relief. Many will be similar
to what weve offered in the past, so take a look at our funding page here:

Colleague Connection

American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual

Meeting

I went to APHA 2017 Creating the Healthiest Nation: Climate

Changes Health November 4-8 in Atlanta, Georgia funded by a
Sewell Stipend and NNLM SCR Professional Development Award.
The attendees were very diverse, which resulted in a variety of
presentations. It was large, but with personal planning in advance,
the conference felt manageable.

As a Sewell scholar I had a mentor and a volunteer experience. My

mentor was Dr. Patricia Dolan-Mullen at the University of Texas
Health Sciences Center at Houston School of Public Health. Dr. Mullen has a wealth of
experience and connections, which was on display as she introduced me to public health
professionals in the reserved section of Mondays General Session. Among other parts of the
general session, Lex Frieden was awarded the Fries Prize. Afterward we discussed how I had a
friend who worked on disability issues in Houston. Following the session Dr. Mullen met Lex
and coincidentally my friend was there as well. My friend and I later met up. As for my
volunteering, I worked at the NLM Expo Booth. Mostly, expo attendees stopped to say how
much they used PubMed. Handouts were available to highlight NLM databases, especially the
public health ones. I discussed a database project with NLM librarians and got their input.

The 3 most important/impressive sessions attended or lessons learned by attending were:

1. While working the booth Monday, an NLM librarian mentioned a session she attended
about how to talk about politicized issues in terms of concrete, local examples. Later during
that days debriefing, another Sewell recipient mentioned the same session. This lead me to
find it myself to review the slides.

2. I was pleased to realize how much impact librarians can have in public health tools and
programs.

3. Excellence in Practice-Based Teaching for Public Health (3000.0) provided insights into
how other schools of public health are improving their programs and the role that librarians can
play in those improvements.

William D. Postell, Sr. Professional Development Award Recipient Report

In May 2017, I received the William D. Postell, Sr. Award to attend a continuing education
course at the 2017 MLA Annual Meeting in Seattle, WA. The CE I chose was Practical Skills and
Tips for Research: From Proposal to Presentation, with instructors Skye Bickett and Christine
Willis. The class provided an overview of the research process, including defining a research
topic, developing research questions, choosing the appropriate research design, obtaining IRB
approval, and finding funding opportunities. The instructors also provided tips on creating
effective poster presentations and publishing an article in a peer-reviewed journal. All in all, it
was a worthwhile course and Im very grateful to the SCC/MLA Awards and Scholarship
committee for giving me this award. I highly encourage all members to apply for the Postell
Award!
