I would like to thank all of those who have served SCC/MLA so faithfully
Montie Dobbins
this past year. Our outgoing Executive Board and Committee Chairs built
SCC/MLA President
upon the firm foundation of our past leadership, and Im confident that
our incoming leadership will continue that good work. I am also grateful
for all of those who volunteered to serve on committees this year, as I know they are ready to
dig in and get to work. I know the members of the program and local arrangements committees
are already working on a great meeting for San Antonio!
I encourage each member to renew your membership. Without you, SCC/MLA cannot continue
to be the active and dynamic chapter it is. When you renew your membership, dont forget to
volunteer for a committee! There are plenty of exciting committees to serve on, and the work is
not only fun, but it forms the backbone of our chapter. There will be plenty of calls to volunteer
for a committee, so dont be shy about answering! I also invite our members to mentor those
who are new to our chapter. Help them get to know folks and make them feel welcome. Lets
learn one anothers stories, and build a better chapter together.
As we head into a new year, let us take advantage of every opportunity SCC/MLA offers. In
2018, we head to San Antonio, the site of the very first annual meeting of the South Central
Chapter of the Medical Library Association. While it is fun to reflect on our history, how much
more interesting it is to create a vital and vibrant future!
So dont forget:
Montie Dobbins
President-Elect
Membership renewals for 2018 are currently underway, and everyone should have received the
initial email reminder about them on November 2. Officially, current memberships expires on
December 31, but anyone who has not renewed by that time will still have until February 28, 2018,
to renew for the 2018 calendar year.
If you wish to pay online with a valid credit card, all you need to do is select the Pay online
option and follow the on-screen instructions. Please note: The online payment processor (Stripe) is
currently validating submitted credit cards using the address and Zip code on file for the card along
with the security code, so if you get a message that the payment did not completely process, this is
why. If you have any questions or comments about this, please contact me immediately.
If you prefer to pay by check, you should select the Pay by invoice option, which will generate an
invoice that you may print out and send with your payment; the invoice will also be emailed to you
automatically. With my current situation, I may not be able to deposit the check as quickly as I
would otherwise, but I promise I will deposit them as soon as I can.

Every librarian I have met, every meeting I have attended inspired me to do more, be better at
what I do, and share with others what I have learned. I never fully realized the impact of my
activities until Debbie Sibley called and I heard Shari Cliftons presentation. I am overwhelmed
with gratitude for this distinguished honor.

A couple of quotes from the letters of recommendation written for this years recipient:
The recipients loyalty and dedication to the chapter has never faltered.
As for the recipients participation in SCC, didnt just do a lot of things but did a lot of things
extremely well.
The recipient has been a member of SCC for decades and has chaired or been a member of
nearly all the committees. The recipient has produced and/or collaborated on beaucoup SCC
papers and posters. The recipient is a distinguished member of AHIP. The recipient has served
as president of both HLIS and SCC.
Her contributions to the infrastructure of the organization are many. She is has kept us
technologically current and in touch by being our listserv manager since the beginning.
Oh one more quote The joy she brings to her work is infectious. I believe there was also a
quote about joi de vivre
I am very pleased to announce that Joy Summers-Ables is the 2017 Distinguished Service
Award recipient!
Thanks to everyone who submitted photos from the meeting to the Google Photos page. Here
is just a preview. Be sure to check out all of the photos and upload yours:

There are so many things that made the meeting so memorable to me. The venue was perfectly
set in historic Old Town Albuquerque, and the view from my 10th floor balcony was spectacular.
The Hotel Albuquerque and food were phenomenal! Oklahoma Tex Mex is good but not nearly
as flavorful as New Mexican food! I learned so much from the presentations, as well as the
guest speakers. I enjoyed Dr. Patriquins HLIS presentation, Mindful Meditation. It was very
calming, and I hope to continue that practice now that I am back home.
I think what really made the meeting so memorable was everyone that I met. My friend and
mentor, Anne Howard, was the best! She introduced me to so many great people, and we
talked about how she began with SCC/MLA and what the
chapter means to her. Annes encouragement
throughout my trip inspired me to attend many of the
social events and get to know other members. Dr. Dede
Rios was also a new, amazing friend. Her positivity and
energy brought such life to the event. She always
brightened my day. The new member reception was also
a great place to meet other new members, as well as
chapter officers. Throughout the meeting, I never felt like
a stranger or even a new member; I always felt welcome.
Thank You to the Local Arrangements Committee for
doing such an amazing job! I know there was a lot of
hard work that went into this years preparations. My hope is when I graduate this coming
spring that I will find a medical librarian position where I can stay apart of SCC/MLA and
hopefully come back next year for the 2018 SCC/MLA Annual Meeting in San Antonio.

Im thankful to my mentor, Julie Esparza, for her words of wisdom and perspective. Im also
grateful to Heather Moberly for encouraging this opportunity; and my supervisor, Esther
Carrigan, for her support.
This conference was an invaluable experience to learn more about medical librarianship and its
leadership and opportunities within the region. I look forward to seeing the SCC/MLA family
again in San Antonio.

This years writing retreat was phenomenal! As a novice writer, I benefited greatly by attending
the SCC/SCAMEL Writing Retreat! The mentors, Stewart Brower and Jack Bullion did an
awesome job setting the tone, choosing a spectacular writing space, and offering constructive
feedback of our work. The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library was such a
beautiful and serene place to create, and their staff were so helpful. Even the view from the
third floor of the balloons in the afternoon was just enough to inspire you to write more. I
learned so much from the cohort, and Im so motivated to keep writing. I highly recommend
this to anyone who is even remotely interested in becoming published. Write ON!

The South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association (SCC/MLA) held its annual
conference in Albuquerques Old Town, October 13 17, 2017. This was the 5th time this event
has been hosted in Albuquerque, the other years being 2007, 1997, 1987, and 1974.
Hosting in October allowed us to take advantage of New Mexicos beautiful fall weather and
Albuquerques amazing Balloon Fiesta to highlight our theme The Skys the Limit, even if
there was a bus driver snafu on Saturday and too much wind for lift off on Sunday!
This year was also the debut of a push towards a paperless conference and a meeting app.
Survey feedback indicates that most of the membership supports this. We welcomed 151 total
registrants to the conference, a number of whom attended a special Outreach track put on the
wonderful people of the NNLM SCR, and funded by the NLM. We heard thought-provoking
presentations by Dr. Patti Brennan of the NLM and Siobhan Riordan of the Philadelphia Free
Library, meditated during the Hospital Library Interest Section (HLIS) Luncheon, and heard of all
the great work going on in the chapter during poster sessions, lightning talks, and
presentations.

Membership Committee
On behalf of the Membership Committee (MC) I want to share the following:
First Thanks to everyone who attended the New Members Reception in Albuquerque.
Everyone went out of their way to make new members feel welcome.
Second Please remember to renew your SCC membership and to update your profile
information in the membership database at the same time. Wild Apricot makes this very easy
and it means SCC has the most current information for our members.
Third Current members should have received an email (11-16-17) asking you to vote on the
new membership category. Approval of a new dues category for retirees was voted on and
approved at the Business Meeting so it now moves to the full membership for a vote. Thanks to
Jean Hillyer, MC Chair (2016-2017) for moving this proposal through the process. We hope this
new membership category will encourage continued participation and mentoring by retired
members. Please take a few minutes to give us a yea or nay.

We had a great talk from Dr. Lara Patriquin about meditation and mindfulness. We even
engaged in some medication um meditation. Sorry, we were not recreating a scene from

The election results are in and congratulations to Tim Kenny President elect and Bob Bartlett

We also extend the call to any HLIS members that have any documents from the last decade (or

Newsletter Report
We would like to start out by giving a big shout-out to everyone involved with putting together
such an incredible meeting in Albuquerque. The Local Arrangements and Program Committees
did an amazing job. Special thanks to all the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library
and Informatics Center staff! Everyone was super helpful and hid their exhaustion well. Jacob
Nash and Steve Stockdale were the LAC MVPs for sure. They worked so hard, they really put the
you cant be in more than one place at the same time theory to the test. From the speakers
and presentations to the food and festivities, a great time was had by all! If you couldnt make
it this year, we highly recommend getting your plan together now to participate in next years
meeting in San Antonio. The 2018 LAC is already brewing up a great time, so watch for their
emails and calls for contributions over the next several months!
The newsletter isnt just for news. It provides an opportunity for members to get to know each
other. In just these first few issues, we have certainly learned a lot about you that we never
would have known if it werent for the newsletter. We hope that you will consider sending in
articles as well as announcements and photos.

Mark your calendars and plan to join us for SCCs 45th annual meeting in October 2018. The
Local Arrangements Committee is excited to welcome everyone to an opening party hosted on
the grounds of the Alamo. Our meeting venue will be the historic Menger Hotel, located just
steps from the Alamo and San Antonios famous River Walk.
We will meet in San Antonio as the city celebrates its Tricentennial. Even if you have visited San
Antonio previously, there will be many new things to see throughout the year. History buffs
wont want to miss some of the special exhibits at the Witte Museum, including 300 Years of
San Antonio History: Confluence and Culture and Gathering at the Waters: 12,000 Years of
People. Or, kick back and relax as you enjoy one of the three new beers created in honor of
the Tricentennial, from local breweries Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling and Freetail Brewing
Company.
We hope you will join us on a mission to learn, explore, and celebrate October 19-24, 2018!

Were still a couple months away from opening up applications for 2018-2019 grants, but nows
the time for brainstorming, gathering partners, and asking us questions about new funding
opportunities, including one focused on disaster preparedness and relief. Many will be similar
to what weve offered in the past, so take a look at our funding page here:
https://nnlm.gov/scr/funding
That page also has a link to past funded projects if you need ideas. We do, of course, answer
our phones and are happy to hear from you if you want to talk to us. Our office line is (817)
735-2223.
We Need Your Help to Update the South Central Region Members Directory
Were in the process of updating the directory, and you may have received a call from us at
some point to do so, but we would love your assistance. If you have a free moment, check your
organizations entry in our members directory and then email us with any updates you may
have at nnlm-scr@unthsc.edu. You can also update it yourself if you remember your login
information.

1. While working the booth Monday, an NLM librarian mentioned a session she attended
about how to talk about politicized issues in terms of concrete, local examples. Later during
that days debriefing, another Sewell recipient mentioned the same session. This lead me to
find it myself to review the slides.
2. I was pleased to realize how much impact librarians can have in public health tools and
programs.
3. Excellence in Practice-Based Teaching for Public Health (3000.0) provided insights into
how other schools of public health are improving their programs and the role that librarians can
play in those improvements.

In May 2017, I received the William D. Postell, Sr. Award to attend a continuing education
course at the 2017 MLA Annual Meeting in Seattle, WA. The CE I chose was Practical Skills and
Tips for Research: From Proposal to Presentation, with instructors Skye Bickett and Christine
Willis. The class provided an overview of the research process, including defining a research
topic, developing research questions, choosing the appropriate research design, obtaining IRB
approval, and finding funding opportunities. The instructors also provided tips on creating
effective poster presentations and publishing an article in a peer-reviewed journal. All in all, it
was a worthwhile course and Im very grateful to the SCC/MLA Awards and Scholarship
committee for giving me this award. I highly encourage all members to apply for the Postell
Award!
