A century of changing lives
Founder Stevens Warren Flower.
Ellen Burge Flower, the beloved wife of
Stevens Warren Flower, passed away more
than 100 years ago. In her memory, Flower
willed $20,000 to build a hospital in the
downtown Toledo community where he
lived. In 1910, the first building of Flower
Hospital opened on Collingwood Boulevard
and Cherry Street in Toledo.
In 1975, Flower Hospital moved to its
current location on Harroun Road in Syl-
vania. Over the last 100 years, the 28 beds
of the original hospital have since grown
tenfold into one of the area’s leading health
care facilities.
Throughout the decades, Flower Hospi-
tal has always been committed to providing
outstanding patient care. Stevens Warren
Flower’s legacy of caring and community
lives on today at Flower Hospital, where pa-
tients have a place to turn for high-quality
care delivered with compassion, trust and
understanding.
Flower Hospital, a member of ProMedica
Health System, is a 292-bed facility located
in Sylvania, OH. Flower Hospital’s 1,500
employees are dedicated to a full spectrum
of health care, providing comfort and care
to generations of patients and their families.
Flower Hospital is home to the regional
leader in radiation oncology services, the
Hickman Cancer Center and is the regional
leader for inpatient adult psychiatric ser-
vices.
Flower Hospital also offers a Level III
emergency trauma center; inpatient reha-
bilitation services; surgical services; cardiac
and pulmonary rehabilitation; and a full
range of diagnostic and emergency labora-
tory and radiology services. The Flower
Hospital campus is also home to senior and
assisted-living facilities, such as Lake Park,

New moms are happy moms at Flower

Maybe the happiest place in a hospital or
medical center is the Maternity Unit. That’s cer-
tainly the case at Flower Hospital, where more
than 1200 babies are welcomed into the world
each year. Those babies are born in one of 12
(soon to be 13) state-of-the-art Labor-Delivery-
Recovery-Post Partum rooms (LDRP) where
moms stay from the time of their admission until
the bigger family is ready to go home. Expectant
dads, grandparents, and eager siblings can sleep
in the rooms, watch TV, and even cook micro-
wave meals or snacks while waiting for the
arrival of the newest member of their family.
After the delivery, the homey atmosphere is a
comfortable place for everyone to get to know
baby, and a perfect spot for mom to work with
nurses and other professionals as she gets to
know her baby’s schedule and mannerisms.
Elaine Ozarzak, the Administrative Director
of the Maternity Unit, explains that the LDRP
rooms serve several purposes. “All the neces-
sary technical equipment is in the rooms, ready
to go when needed. Until then, the rooms are
family-friendly places, where mom can visit
with family members and still be close to care

vices. Our supportive and compassionate
treatment programs encourage the patient

and involvement in their care. Our goal
is to meet the psychiatric needs of each
patient while allowing the patient to

services use long, flexible tubes to visually
