Corruption

What is corruption? It is an unethical method used by a person to gain an advantage over

others. Corruption is what we read in newspapers, about the opaque financing of political
campaigns, scams, Panama papers, match fixing etc. Corruption is the greatest factor
consistently hindering development and realization of democracy and economy. This essay will
throw light upon the real causes, the effects and how we can curb the corruption in India.

As the time moves more and more people are being swept by the move of corruption. Lots of
factors and forces have conspired to cause it and spread it everywhere. First of all, it is the
economic insecurity which is regarded as the most important cause of corruption. The poor
people become corrupt in the hope of becoming rich. The rich have craving for luxurious goods
and imported commodities, such as branded clothes, gadgets, cosmetics, wrist watches, etc.
This contributes to an increase in the incidence of corruption.

Secondly, employees in some of the government departments are paid comparatively very less
salary. This situation is said to be the cause of corruption in administration. Clerks in the court,
peons and attenders in all government departments, police constables and such other
employees draw poor salary.

Also, it is the very presence of black money which is the main source of corruption. This money
is obtained by various ways, namely, tax evasion, smuggling, speculation in immovable property
and shares and stocks, receiving fees and remuneration partly or wholly in cash without showing
them in the accounts, trading in licenses and permits, etc.

Corruption has a huge effect on people, economy and all levels of the society.
Corruption in judiciary system, leads to improper justice and the victims suffer. Due to corruption
in the police system, the investigation process goes on for decades. To recall and mention a
famous quote here, Justice delayed is justice denied. There is the problem of poor health
and improper hygiene. There is no fresh drinking water, proper roads, quality food grains
supply, milk adulteration, etc. Due to lack of transparency, there is loss of faith in government.
This also leads to fall in foreign investment and lack of development. The more the corruption,
the slower the economic growth.

Therefore, this unethical practice needs to be controlled in our to improve. The current
government has turned to reform options to reduce corruption and mitigate its effects. The move
of the demonetization of currency and bringing more transparency in administration is
applaudable. However, We should be honest to ourselves. If each of us is faithful and truthful
towards our profession, then corruption will automatically decrease. We need to pay attention
towards professional accountability. Our country is going through great transition period. Until or
unless we become part of this change we cant completely eradicate this problem. As Robin
Sharma says, change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous in the end.
