Yale University

I chose Yale University as my college to research because I was interested in their

academics and its history. Yale University is an Ivy League school which are among the most

prestigious colleges in the United States; they are associated with academic excellence and

prestige. Originally named the Collegiate School, Yale was founded in 1701 in Saybrook; in

1716, the college was moved moved to New Haven, Connecticut, where it remains today. A

wealthy English merchant, Elihu Yale, donated a generous amount of money, books, and other

cloth goods in 1718, the university was renamed to Yale University in his honor (Yale History).

The modern day Yale university is a private, co-ed college with no religious affiliations.

As of 2017, the undergraduate enrollment was 5,472 students who are among the various

graduate students and alumni living on the 345 acre campus. The tuition for Yale is estimated to

be $51,400, with additional payments of $15,500 (room and board) as well as other costs such as

the Yale Health Hospitalization & Specialty Care Insurance ($2,332) the student activities fee

($125). Yale offers financial aid in the form of The Yale Scholarship, merit-based scholarships,

entitlement grants, and the Yale Financial Aid Award. To apply, students must apply by

submitting a FAFSA form, College Board CSS Profile application, and a submission of the

parent's federal tax returns.

Those who wish to be accepted into Yale must submit their application by January 1st,

while the early action application deadline is November 1st. Those who get accepted have an
average GPA of 4.19, and average SAT (on the new scale) and ACT scores of 1540 and 33

respectively (PrepScholar). Yale is a liberal arts and sciences centered college, their majors cover

a large variety of topics such as economics, political science and government, history,

psychology, and cell/cellular and molecular biology. The university also offers opportunities for

doubler majors (by petition), studying abroad, simultaneous bachelor and master's programs, as

well as an honor seat. The campus also offers a variety of domestic, international, ISA-eligible,

and CGCC internships such as the Paul Block Journalism, Yale Alumni Community Service

Fellowship, William F. Buckley, and AIESEC Yale internships which can be on- and off-campus

or summer programs.

While those who move to New Haven move there primarily for academics, there are

other activities surrounding campus for the students to experience. Nearby are multiple Yale

sponsored museums, parks, and dining halls. A few activities of note include the Ingalls Rink

which is open for Yale hockey and figure skating events and the Yale Peabody Museum of

Natural Science. New Haven is also the home to multiple bed and breakfasts, parks, and centers

for art. Multiple ATMs are available in near or around convenience stores. Students can also

participate in on-campus activities such as a capella groups, club sports (such as badminton,

basketball, cricket, and polo), intramural sports (such as soccer, volleyball, and softball), varsity

sports (the most notable being squash, sailing, fencing, and hockey), and volunteering

associations (Dwight Hall, TEDxYale, the Civil Liberties Union). Students can also experience

greek life by joining sororities and fraternities such as Alpha Epsilon Pi, Alpha Phi Sorority, and

the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.

Students live in one of the 14 residential colleges, each college has its own dining room,

dining traditions and residential community, (Yale College). Freshmen and sophomores are
guaranteed on residence and are required to live on campus and all freshmen live on single-sex

floors. Upon moving into dorms, students are encouraged to communicate with their roommates

about bringing furniture, stereos, telephones, rugs, televisions, lamps, and linens. To change

roommates or move to a different dorm the student must submit a petition to switch living

conditions. There is an extremely strict policy prohibiting drugs and alcohol in dorms and on

campus.

Meal plans for undergraduate students include the Full Meal plan ($3,400 per semester),

the Anytime Meal plan ($3,470 per semester), the Any-14 Meal plan ($3,400 per semester).

Students may also get off campus meal plans such as the 5-meal and 150-block plans.
