smaller parts of the words.

Materials:

Crunch and Munch decoding strategy sheet
Post-it notes

Pre-Lesson Assignments/Prior Knowledge:

The students are familiar with the concept of chunking smaller parts of words to
decode the whole word.

Lesson Beginning:
The teacher will call the students to the carpet by table group for Readers
Workshop. The teacher will read the Crunch and Munch decoding strategy rhyme
to the students once, and then have the students read along with the teacher a
second time.

Instructional Plan:
The teacher will read Meanies in the House to the students. The teacher
will have covered tricky two-syllable words with a post-it note. When the
teacher reads these words, they will model the crunch and munch strategy
for the students.
Halfway through the book, the teacher will ask the students to join in using
the crunch and munch strategy in the book as they read along.
Towards the end of the book, the teacher will come to a trick word and ask
the students to decode it themselves.
The teacher will ask the assigned Book Box Caller to call people to retrieve
their book boxes.
The students will independently read for 5-10 minutes.
The students will pair up with a partner and discuss any crunch and munch
words they found in their reading.
o Differentiation: Depending on the frustration level, the teacher will
review the Crunch and Munch strategy with the students. The
teacher will sit and listen to individual readers and assist with the
strategy.
o Questions: How do we use chunking to help decode trick words?
How does crunch and munch help us read?
o Transitions: The teacher will have materials readily available to
smooth transitions. The teacher will call students by table group. The
teacher will have the assigned student call other students for
independent reading.
Closure:
The teacher will give each student their own copy of the Crunch and Munch
decoding strategy. The teacher will informally assess knowledge and understanding
by restating the essential question.
