Germanic tribes for
centuries, but by the 300s
barbarian groups like the
Goths had encroached
beyond the Empires
borders.
Constant wars and
overspending had
significantly lightened
imperial coffers, and
oppressive taxation and
inflation had widened the

The fate of Western Rome
was partially sealed in the
late third century, when the

the Empire into two halves
