Introduction:
Some disorders and diseases manifest themselves in different ways. For this mini project, you will research the
disorders that are genetic in origin and report your findings in a chart along with a visual aid in the form of a mini poster:
HEMOPHELIA, SICKLE CELL ANEMIA, HUNTINGTONS DISEASE, COLORBLINDNESS, and CYSTIC FIBROSIS.
Procedure:
1. For Part 1, you will create an 11 x 18 poster with the 5 disorders/diseases that you might see in a doctors office.
2. You must have at least FIVE visuals within your poster.
3. When designing your poster, consider it as a public service announcement to make the poster visually appealing
but also informative. Use visual aids to draw attention to your poster so that the audience (people in the
doctors office) would want to read it. Dont be too wordy in your poster.
4. For Part 2, you will answer the following questions in the form of a chart:
a. What are the genotypes of these disorders? Show an example by using a Punnett Square, key and a P1
cross showing an F1 genotypic ratio.
b. What is happening with the DNA to cause these phenotypic effects? What causes the disorder?
c. What are the phenotypic effects (symptoms)?
d. How is the disorder inherited? (dominant, recessive, X-linked, autosomal)
e. Are there carrier forms and/or lethal forms of this disorder?
f. How can this disorder be treated?
g. How can this disorder be avoided?
5. All topics (a-g) must be covered in a chart. You do NOT have to write the questions because you have headings
in your chart.
6. This is NOT a research paperit does not have to be extremely wordy. Just say enough to get the point across.
