CASING DESIGN
1. To keep the hole open
2. To isolate porous formations with different pressure
regimes
3. To protect fresh water zones
4. To provide a foundation for the wellhead/B.O.P.'s
5. To provide a production conduit
CASING & CEMENTING
Functions
1. Conductor (20”-30”) to protect loose, near surface
formations and enables circulation of drilling fluid. Piling
Conductor to refusal depth or drill & drive (50-100m)

2. Surface casing (13-3/8”- 20”) to provide blowout

protection and prevent loss circulation. Setting depth
Surface range from 200-500m depending on the shallow seismic
casing result.

Tieback string 3. Intermediate casing (9-5/8” - 16”) to isolate

unstable hole section and loss circulation, low pressure
Intermediate and production zones (often set in the transition between
casing normal to abnormal zone). Setting depth range from
1000-2500m

4. Production (4-1/2”-9-5/8”) to isolate production

Production zone and contains formation pressure in the event of
casing tubing leaks

5. Liner (4-1/2” - 13-3/8”) to improve hydraulic

performance during deep drilling and to allow the use of
Production larger tubing above the liner top
liner
6. Tieback string to provide additional pressure integrity
from the liner top to the wellhead
1. Well data – Formation Types, Pore pressures, Fracture gradient,
offset well data
2. Fit for purpose casing design. Cheapest option without
compromising technical design
3. Bottom up design i.e what are the tubing size and formation fluid to
be produced
4. Consideration for Casing Lead time delivery
5. Able to withstand the whole life of the wells
6. Conventional casing types vs special size casing
7. Consideration for other requirements e.g Hole size, Wellhead & x-mas
tree, Rig requirement, etc
 Tension – Must be able to withstand the maximum
anticipated loading weight while running, pulling out, change
in temperature and pressure

 Burst – Must be able to withstand the max anticipated

internal pressure with min annular pressure support

 Collapse - Must be able to withstand the max anticipated

external pressure with min internal pressure support

 Compression – Must be able to withstand compressive

loads when setting some packers and in highly deviated wells
or dog legs.
 Couplings – Free from leaks, maintain ID clearance, strength
through bend areas and in compression and tension loads and
rotational load. Use standard API coupling (EUE, BTC, LTC) or
proprietary premium coupling (Vam top, Huntings, JF Bear, etc)

 Corrosion - Must be designed to counter corrosion reactions

with flowing fluids over its lifetime. CO2, H2S, acid, cracking, etc.

 Abrasion/Erosion – Must withstand abrasion and erosion

loads over lifetime

 Stimulation Loads – The casing must withstand loads from

acids, fracturing pressure or other stimulations

WELL TRAJECTORY &
DIRECTIONAL DRILLING
Well Trajectory Design :
Well path that is required to be drilled to achieve the given
target(s) objectives as set by the Geologist
A target could be a circular area at the top of a producing
zone.

Deviated Well Trajectory:

Deviated wells are defined as those wells which are to follow a
prescribed traverse and intersect at specified objective.
Design Consideration for Well Trajectory

1. Minimal DLS – Minimal Dog Leg Severity to achieve the given target(s).
Standard 1.5 – 2.0 deg/30m to avoid problem with running casing and
loggings. Maximum DLS 3deg/30m

2. Low to medium well angle - Generally, it is easier to drill low angle well
i.e around 30-40 deg than high angle well

3. Build and Hold Trajectory (J-shape) – 2D well trajectory instead of 3D or

“S-shape” or horizontal.

4. Shallow kick off – Design to kick off the trajectory as shallow as possible.
Generally, kick off point is selected after the surface casing has been set

5. Types of BHA to be used – Consider the most cost effective BHA to drill
the hole sections

6. Contingency for smaller hole size – In the event hole problem dictates,
casing will be set shallower than design.
DRILL BITS
DRIL BITS

 Selection of correct drill bit is essential to ensure the hole is drilled within the
planned time
 Nozzles size selection for TFA is important for rate of penetration (ROP) and bit face
cleaning
 Hydraulic calculation is also done to optimize both ROP and hole cleaning to avoid
hole packing off
 MT bit – for surface hole & very soft formation (clays), drill junks
 TCI bit – for intermediate hole, short section, and soft formation
 PDC – maximize ROP, long section, medium to hard formation, expensive

CEMENTING DESIGN
CEMENTING DESIGN

✓ Oil Well Cement is called Portland Class-G cement.

✓ Density used normally at 12.5ppg for bentonite slurry and
15.8ppg neat slurry
✓ Bentonite slurry – 300 – 500 psi compressive strength (lead
slurry)
✓ Neat slurry - The target compressive strength between
1000psi to 4000psi (tail slurry)
✓ Lite weight cement used for losses zones or below normal
pressure regime
✓ Silica flour is blended with class G cement for application on
HT (>150C) formation
✓ Spacers used to separate the cement and mud. Also to clean
up the mud filter cake on the wellbore
CEMENTING DESIGN

Additives are also added to control fluid loss, thickening times,

and fibers as safety nets to seal losses zones

depending on amount of salt and other factors. The effect of mud
on the set time of cement is unpredictable.
