The real life corrosion that have not been solved that I choose for my case study is metal

roof
corrosion. A metal roof is made from an iron based metal and frequently exposed to rain and
moisture. Hence, they suffer from corrosion. Corrosion is a natural process, it changes a
refined metal to a more chemically-stable form, such as its oxide, hydroxide, or sulphate. It is
the gradual destruction of materials (usually metals) by chemical and or electrochemical
reaction with their environment.

Cause of corrosion

There is always three element that needs to present in order to perform corrosion in a metal
roof which is iron, water and oxygen. Water is the main cause that perform corrosion.
Electrochemical oxidation of metal in reaction with an oxidant such as oxygen or sulphate.
Rusting, the formation of iron oxides, is a well-known example of electrochemical corrosion.
This type of damage typically produces oxides or salts of the original metal, and results in a
distinctive orange colouration.
Type of corrosion

For this type of issue it is known as galvanic corrosion. Galvanic corrosion is when two
different metals have physical or electrical contact with each other and are immersed in a
common electrolyte, or when the same metal is exposed to electrolyte with different
concentrations.

Flow Accelerated Corrosion is one of the most common in roof tops due to their exposure to
wind and rain. The protective layer is simply blown away or dissolved which exposes the
metal beneath to corrosion.

Stress Corrosion Cracking is another problem suffered by roof structures. High winds and
activities inside a building such as dance halls and gymnasiums all contribute to extra tensile
stress on a roof. Repetitive movement and vibration cause microscopic cracking and
accelerate attack from water particles.

Solution to solve this problem

There are 3 ways to solve this issue which is:

1. Painting- Protect the roof from getting corrode or rusted. Paint your roof with a
primer that contains at least 80% zinc. Zinc is an excellent corrosion and rust
preventive. A zinc-rich primer works best if you prepare your roof well before
application. This will necessitate a thorough cleaning of the roof to remove all dirt
and rust that may have set in.

2. Coating- Elastomeric coatings are an excellent rust preventive. They are an acrylic
sealing system that is applied onto the roof in layers. Once it sets it forms an effective
barrier on the roof against corrosion and rust.

3. Galvanized roof- Treat your roof with liquefied zinc to create galvanized metal. The
zinc forms a coating of several layers over the tin and effectively protects it from
corrosion and rust. When you galvanize your tin roof with zinc, you will extend its
longevity as the tin will remain effectively protected underneath the zinc for several
years. It toughens the roof from extreme weather such as hail, snow and excessive
heat, all of which can facilitate rust.
