According to the Worlds Health Organisation (WHO), the report of Malaysians’ consumption of tobacco based
on the latest survey result on the 31st of December 2016 is as follow:
Smokeless tobacco (snuff by keeping in mouth, nose, chewing tobacco, and betel quid with tobacco, electronic
cigarettes, and others) use data:
Youth statistics were based from the Tobacco and E-Cigarette Survey Among Malaysian Adolescents
(TECMA), in 2016 where they sampled youth from ages 13 to 15. Adult statistics from ages 15 to 75 were from
the National Health and Morbidity Survey in 2015.
According to the table above, for the Malaysian youths, 17.4% of them aged 13 to 15 smoked tobacco with
29.5% making up boys and 3.9% making up girls. 12.9% of youth used smokeless tobacco with 19.6% making
up the boys and 5.3% making up the girls.
In 2015, approximately 22.8% (4,991,458) of Malaysian population aged 15 years and above smoked tobacco
with 43.0 % (4.85 million) being men and 1.4% (143,566) being women. Out of the current smokers, 20.5%
were daily smokers with 38.8% of them being men and 1.1% of making up the women. About one tenth of the
Malaysian population aged 15 years and above used smokeless cigarette, 20.8% being men and 0.8% being
women.
It is highly obvious that men are more prevalent to smoking that women in Malaysia.
