Grade Level Expectancies, an explanation for students and parents
The music educators in Batavia have outlined what every student should be able to do by the conclusion of each school
year. These benchmarks are known as Grade Level Expectancies (GLE’s). The purpose of GLE’s is for students to have
meaningful feedback about their progress and for teachers to have a tool at which to better assess student growth
against. If a student wishes to perform in a varsity ensemble by the time they are in high school, they should expect to
be in the Advanced Placement (AP) levels during high school. Placement in high school ensembles is measured by the
number of students with high GLE’s.
Every unit, students must “pass off” a specific number of GLE’s (the exact number depends on the instrument). Students
can move as fast as they want through the curriculum as long as they meet the requirements. Parents are encouraged
to check frequently with student progress during each school year.
An example of GLE’s
already recorded their progress at home, they have the option to stay in class or leave to work ahead. Any student who
misses their designated day can either make-up their work on the day designated for make-up work (there will be one in
each unit) or complete the assignments from home.
The unit schedule is based on the school calendar, the concert schedule, and other school functions. A unit schedule is
posted in each ensemble room, the department website, and charms at the beginning of each year.
Private instruction is encouraged during the school day and private teachers will help move students through the GLE’s
at a faster pace than regular band students. Students may take lessons during class and lessons are highly
recommended.
Honors Program
The Honors Program is available to Wind Symphony students only and is optional. More specific information can be
found in the Wind Symphony syllabus.
