AI student Bina48 takes NDNU philosophy of love course

In the most literal terms imaginable,
the digital divide is being bridged in a
Belmont college classroom.
For the first time ever, a robot named
Bina48 joined the ranks of human stu-
dents at Notre Dame de Namur
University last semester in professor
William Barry’s philosophy of love
class.
Bina48 virtually sat in on the class
via teleconferencing program Skype
and even participated in the final exam
of the course which Barry hoped would
help the robot better understand human
emotions such as care and compas-
sion.
In his belief that artificial intelli-
gence can augment education, as well
as a variety of other endeavors, Barry
said he was proud to host the first ever
robot college student.
“It was so cool to be the world’s first
teacher of artificial intelligence in a
college course,” he said.
Prior to joining the Peninsula class,
Bina48 established an impressive rep-
utation. The robot owned by scientist,
academic and entrepreneur Martine
Rothblatt is designed with humanoid
features to gain sentience through pro-
gramming to build memories, replicate

‘Pete’ Liebengood dead at 73
DAILY JOURNAL STAFF REPORT
Don Peter “Pete” Liebengood, profession-
al sports reporter, anchor and producer for
KCRA-TV, KRON-TV and ESPN, died Dec.
22 in Redwood City. The husband of
Redwood City Councilwoman Alicia
Aguirre, Liebengood was 73 year old.  an upstart sports network
Pete Liebengood was born to Don and
Jean Liebengood in Pontiac, Illinois, Sept.
17, 1944. He and his younger brother Tom
grew up in Santa Barbara. Pete Liebengood
attended San Marcos High School (class of
1962), where he excelled in football, and
was named All American in 1962.
He graduated from San Francisco State
with a Bachelor of Arts in radio, television
and film. While at S.F. State, he continued
his football career and was named All-FWC
offensive left tackle in 1965. In 1988, he
was inducted into the S.F. State Athletic Hall
of Fame, and in 2017 he was inducted into
the S.F. State Gridiron Hall of Fame. 
After college, Pete Liebengood served in
the California National Guard. His lifelong
love of sports carried over to his profes-
sional career as a sports reporter and anchor,
which began at KCRA TV Sacramento.
While in Sacramento, Pete and DeeAnna
Liebengood had their two sons, Kelly and
Kevin. His broadcasting career later blos-

Big labor sees growth potential in California pot workers

GOSHEN — Unions have caught a whiff of
a rare opportunity to organize a whole new
set of workers as recreational marijuana
becomes legal in California.
The United Farm Workers, Teamsters and
United Food and Commercial Workers are
looking to unionize the tens of thousands of
potential workers involved in the legal weed
game, from planters to rollers to sellers. The
move could provide a boost to organized
labor’s lagging membership — if infighting
doesn’t get in the way.
The United Farm Workers, co-founded by
iconic labor leader Cesar Chavez, says organ-
izing an industry rooted in agriculture is a
natural fit, and growers could label their prod-
ucts with the union’s logo as a marketing
strategy.
“If you’re a cannabis worker, the UFW
wants to talk with you,” national vice presi-
dent Armando Elenes said.

older at licensed shops beginning Jan. 1.
Cannabis in California already is a $22 bil-
lion industry, including medical marijuana
and a black market that accounts for most of
that total, according to University of
California, Davis, agriculture economist
Philip Martin. Medical marijuana has been
legal since 1996, when California was the
first state to approve such a law.

Dems aim for 2018 midterm boost from Trump tax plan fallout

ATLANTA — A Democratic congressional
candidate outside Philadelphia calls the
Republican tax overhaul a “cynical bill” that
will redistribute wealth upward.
One of her counterparts in California dis-
misses estimates of tax savings for most
U.S. households and says the legislation is
“just putting money in the pocket of the
wealthy.” And in Kansas, a Democratic can-
didate for governor says it’s “a recipe for dis-
aster” that previews inevitable cuts to popu-
lar programs like Social Security and
Medicare.
While Republicans celebrate a massive tax
overhaul they say will goose the economy
and increase workers’ take-home pay up and
down the income ladder, Democrats are aim-
ing to turn the tax law into a cudgel in next
year’s fight to retake control of Congress
and to dent GOP advantages in statehouses.
Democrats hope to use the tax plan, passed
without a single Democratic vote, to stake
their ground as the party of middle-class and
working-class America. They hope
Republican efforts to gut the 2010 health
care law and President Donald Trump’s
unpopularity will help that cause.
“It’s all a consistent message: This is not
what you were promised,” says Chrissy
Houlahan, a Democratic candidate in the sub-
urban Philadelphia district of Republican
Rep. Ryan Costello, who voted for the tax
plan. He is one of Democrats’ top GOP tar-
gets as they try to flip the 24 GOP-held seats
necessary for a House majority.
Republicans acknowledge dismal polling
for their approach but count on a turnaround
in public opinion as tax cuts for many take
effect.
A Wall-Street Journal/NBC News poll
taken Dec. 13-15 found just 17 percent of
respondents expect to pay less in taxes,
while a third thought they’d pay more. Two-
thirds of those polled said corporations
would get breaks; more than half said rich
people would get cuts.
Indeed, the overhaul slashes the corporate
rate from 35 to 21 percent, and adds generous
deductions for certain types of businesses.

Man arrested following pursuit with police
A Las Alamos man was arrested Saturday night in connec-
tion with leading police on a pursuit in Pacifica.
David Allen McCoy, 33, was arrested on suspicion of
felony reckless evading a police officer and misdemeanor
possession of a controlled substance, according to the
Pacifica Police Department.
On Saturday at 11:10 p.m. an officer attempted to conduct
a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling south on Highway 1.
Police said the driver, later identified as McCoy, failed to
yield, turned onto eastbound Linda Mar Boulevard and accel-
erated in an attempt to evade the officer.
The pursuit made its way onto northbound Highway 1
when McCoy's vehicle crashed into a center barrier just
north of Reina Del Mar Avenue, police said.
The vehicle then ran off the road and into heavy foliage
near a Pacifica Police Department station.

‘pipe dream’ that it will give up nukes

dream” for the United States to think it will give up its
nuclear weapons, and called the latest U.N. sanctions to tar-
get the country “an act of war” that violates its sovereignty.
The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved tough
new sanctions against North Korea on Friday in response to
its latest launch of a ballistic missile that Pyongyang says
can reach anywhere on the U.S. mainland. The resolution
was drafted by the United States and negotiated with the
North’s closest ally, China.
“We define this ‘sanctions resolution’ rigged up by the
U.S. and its followers as a grave infringement upon the sov-
ereignty of our Republic, as an act of war violating peace
and stability in the Korean peninsula and the region and cat-
egorically reject the ‘resolution,”’ North Korea’s foreign
ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

cific function. But it didn’t take many days

jurisdictions,” said Borgens.
When Gee asked how the new rules would
be enforced, interim Police Chief Gary
Kirby said he expected the new rules to help
reduce confusion on what constitutes a com-
mercial vehicle for residents. He said the
police department receives many calls from
residents concerned about vehicles with
commercial license plates but may not pose
the same size or safety issues as oversized
commercial vehicles. He estimated the
department has issued an average of 225
citations for commercial vehicles in the last
year but has gone on as many as 600 calls in
which officers educate community members
on what the enforceable rules are.

added that their plants have been grown pes-
ticide-free, making them sustainably grown
and on track to be considered organic as
well. Alexander said the heads of lettuce
they’ve been producing have passed all
taste tests with flying colors.
Though Alexander still lives in San
Francisco, Binney has since moved to San
Carlos, and said their startup’s location on
the city’s east side near other industrial
businesses has boosted their ability to build
their robots and expand their hydroponic
system. Binney said their proximity to
welders, machinists and suppliers of raw
materials has allowed their team to build
 
“There’s all these little businesses that
you don’t necessarily know about just driv-
ing by,” he said. 
The team of five employees is in the
process of moving its greenhouse and sys-
tems to a larger space in San Carlos, where
Alexander said the company can expand its
operations to eventually sell produce to
grocery stores and restaurants in the coming
months.
“We’re growing in multiple ways,” he
said. “We’re growing in terms of plants,
we’re also growing in terms of team.”

for his six years of service in Redwood City

With yet another touchdown reversal by officiating chief
Al Riveron, the only thing that’s “clear and obvious” any-
more is the owners’ decision to grant full replay authority
to NFL headquarters has only added to the league’s cluster of
headaches.
To the player protests, president’s put-downs, receded rat-
ings and sidelined superstars add the unrelenting second-
guessing the league has invited with its frame-by-frame
micromanagement of the on-field officiating in 2017.
After Jets tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins lost two TDs
and Bears tight end Zach Miller another this season, the lat-
est example came Sunday when Kelvin Benjamin’s 4-yard
TD catch just before halftime against New England was
overturned on review.

the FIFA trial:
THE PARTY’S OVER?
For more than 20 years, some soccer offi-
cials acted as if they were entitled to kick-
backs from broadcasting and sponsorship
deals. And they acted as if they were
untouchable by sports judicial bodies,
despite warning signs from criminal and
civil court cases that touched FIFA in
Switzerland up to a decade ago.
In Brooklyn federal court a picture was
painted of South American men high in the
FIFA hierarchy routinely taking payments
of hundreds of thousands of dollars, some-
times millions.
The three defendants were second-tier fig-
ures in the bigger FIFA picture. Yet each got
$4.4 million to $10.5 million in bribes
since 2010, prosecutors said.
In the U.S. federal agencies’ wider investi-
gation of soccer officials across the
Americas, some of the more than 40 people
charged allegedly were paid and took bribes
dating back 25 years. Many pleaded guilty
for reduced sentences.
CORRUPT CONTINENT
It was no secret that some South American
soccer leaders were corrupt.
The two men convicted Friday were rela-
tively late arrivals on the soccer bribery
scene. At times in court it seemed a previous
generation who long held South America’s
influence at FIFA were also on trial.
Indeed, Napout and Burga were said to be
in a “Group of Six” seeking a share of power
and bribes routinely taken by Julio
Grondona of Argentina, Ricardo Teixeira of
Brazil and Nicolas Leoz of Paraguay.
Grondona was FIFA’s senior vice presi-
dent — second in command to Sepp Blatter
— and finance committee chairman when he
died in July 2014 aged 82. He is “co-con-
spirator 1” in Department of Justice indict-
ments unsealed in 2015.
Teixeira and Leoz were also indicted but
have not been extradited. Both left the FIFA
executive committee by April 2013 to avoid
ethics committee bans for taking kickbacks
from World Cup TV deals in a previous scan-
dal known as the ISL case.
As new FIFA leaders try to win public
trust, its vice president from South America
is another Paraguayan, Alejandro
Dominguez.
Yet Dominguez, the new FIFA finance
chairman, was described unfavorably in
court. Star prosecution witness Alejandro
Burzaco said Napout told him Dominguez
was “not a very successful businessman
(who) will probably request” a bribe.
QATAR WORLD CUP
The tiny, wealthy 2022 World Cup host
nation also had a tough trial.
Qatar spent much of the past seven years
denying it bought victory or acted improp-
erly toward FIFA voters.
Still, testimony in Brooklyn suggested a
broader plan to build influence among vot-
ers’ colleagues, even if the defendants had
no vote when FIFA’s executive committee
picked the 2018-2022 World Cup hosts in
December 2010.
However, Grondona, Teixeira and Leoz did
have votes. South America’s trio ultimately
supported Qatar in a five-nation 2022 con-
test, beating the U.S. in the final round.
In court, star witness Burzaco — an
Argentine marketing executive who paid
bribes and made a deal with prosecutors to
testify — described his associate Grondona
complaining to Qataris at a five-star hotel
in Rio de Janeiro about selling his vote too
cheaply.
Grondona said he got into “all these mess
and scandal for only” $1.5 million, while
Teixeira got tens of millions,” Burzaco
said.
Another witness, from a different
Argentine agency, testified that a ledger of
bribes included payments of $750,000 and
$500,000 to South American soccer federa-
tion presidents who did not have World Cup
hosting votes. The payments were labeled
“Q2022.”

have control of the ball until he brought it all
the way down into his chest,” referee Craig
Wrolstad said in a pool report after the game.
It didn’t appear to be so egregious a call as
to merit the league’s reversal, however, and
the decision was met with widespread criti-
cism.

football to stick to the receivers’ gloves and
freeze in a split second.
“The control element keeps coming up tie
after time because when you go frame by
frame it’s going to look like it’s moving and
it doesn’t mean you’ve lost control,” Cowher
suggested.
“Movement does not mean loss of con-
trol,” Brown agreed.
“The fact that we are sitting here arguing
about it tells you what? If it wasn’t clear cut
then it should not have been overturned,”
added Boomer Esiason. “It was ruled a touch-
down. The fact that we’re sitting here debat-
ing it means it should not be overturned. It
has to be clearly an error and that is not clear-
ly an error.”

Steelers clinch first-round bye

HOUSTON — Ben Roethlisberger told his
teammates they didn’t need to make up for
Antonio Brown’s absence. He just wanted
everyone to do what they could to help out,
figuring that would be enough.
It certainly was.
“I know everyone was thinking about A.B.
not being out there and trying to fill those
shoes, but you can’t fill those shoes,”
Roethlisberger said. “I just tried to tell them:
‘Don’t try to fill them, just try to be the best
you can be.”’
Roethlisberger threw for 226 yards and two
touchdowns in the first game since Brown
injured his calf, and the Steelers clinched a
first-round playoff bye with a 34-6 win over
the Texans. Roethlisberger threw passes to
six players as Pittsburgh (12-3) romped over
the lowly Texans (4-11) despite missing the
NFL’s leading receiver.
“It just kind of shows how many weapons
we actually have in our offense ... everybody
played well,” Le’Veon Bell said. “Ben made
the plays when he needed to. I made some
plays on third down when I needed to. It was
literally a total team effort.”
The Steelers led 20-0 at halftime after tak-
ing advantage of two turnovers by the
Texans. Bell added a 10-yard TD run late in
the third quarter and rookie JuJu Smith-
Schuster made it 34-6 with an 18-yard touch-
down grab in the fourth.
Bell finished with 14 carries for 69 yards
and Smith-Schuster had six receptions for 75
yards.
“Significant day for us,” Pittsburgh coach
Mike Tomlin said. “Our last regular-season

win, securing a ticket to the second round. All
very positive things, but it’s kind of the cul-

T.J. Yates was 7 of 16 for 83 yards and a
touchdown for the Texans, who lost their
fifth straight game and for the eighth time in
nine games.
“It’s brutal,” coach Bill O’Brien said of
Houston’s skid. “It’s been a tough year.”
Yates made his second straight start since
Tom Savage sustained a concussion. Yates
left the game briefly on Monday to be evalu-
ated for a concussion, and his replacement,
Taylor Heinicke, sustained a concussion on
his only full possession.
Roethlisberger was replaced by backup
Landry Jones with about six minutes remain-
ing and the game well in hand.
The Steelers hurried and harassed Yates all
day with Mike Hilton leading the way with
three sacks and three quarterback hits,

the retractable roof at the new stadium still
doesn’t work properly , forcing the Falcons
to leave it closed for all but one home game
this season. While we’re at it, an honorable
mention goes to the Pontiac Silverdome,
which also remained partially standing after
the first attempt to blow it up. Maybe the
stadium gods are trying to tell us something.
CHEVY CHASE AWARD: The national
soccer teams from Italy and the United States
freed up their calendars to take a trip to
Walley World next summer. Stunningly,
both failed to qualify for the World Cup. The
Americans were thoroughly embarrassed in
their final qualifying game, losing to tiny
Trinidad before a handful of fans in some-
thing resembling a small-town high school
football stadium. If the U.S. took it hard
missing out on the World Cup for the first
time since 1986, the result was downright
calamitous for the soccer-mad Italians .
They’ve won the championship four times,
most recently in 2006, but they’ll be stuck
at home for the next one. “It’s a black
moment for our game,” midfielder Daniele
De Rossi said after being eliminated by
Sweden. Arrivederci, Italy! We’ll check back
in on you again in 2022.
YOU CAN STAY HOME, TOO
(WELL, SORT OF): In a rare show of
backbone, the International Olympic
Committee dropped a hammer and sickle on
the Russians for running a systematic dop-
ing operation that ranks just below what the
East Germans were injecting into their ath-
letes back in the 1970s and ‘80s. As usual,
the IOC didn’t go quite as far as it should
have, allowing Russian athletes to compete
individually at the 2018 Winter Games as
long as they’re proven clean. But barring the
winter superpower from using its flag, uni-
forms or national anthem, or be counted in
the official medal table, is significant. And it
surely will lessen the luster of the
Pyeongchang Games, which already have
been met with a collective yawn in South
Korea and figure to leave behind the usual
financial carnage that goes to all host coun-
tries.
NO LONGER RUNNETH OVER CUP:
Remember when NASCAR was going to be
America’s next big thing? Not anymore.
Empty seats, dwindling TV ratings, boring
races and a rash of star power-sapping retire-
ments (Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Dale
Earnhardt Jr.) have left the sport stuck in the
slow lane. Capping off an ugly season, the
championship-deciding finale at Homestead
drew the lowest ratings in the race’s history,
the number of viewers plummeting a stag-
gering 23 percent from just one year earlier.
ALL ABOUT THE TIMING AWARD:
Founded in 1962 as the Houston Colt 45s,
the Astros finally won their first World
Series title with a scintillating seven-game
victory over the Dodgers . What made this
even more impressive is how Houston did it,
and what it meant to a city ravaged by
Hurricane Harvey . After losing more than
100 games each year from 2011-13 while
going through a massive rebuilding job, the
Astros soared to the top of the baseball
world. Some said it took ‘em 55 years.
Actually, they were right on time.
HOW NOT TO CONDUCT A COACH-
ING SEARCH: After firing football coach
Butch Jones, the Tennessee Volunteers
sought out a replacement with the ol’ “Who’s
On Rocky Top” comedy routine. Abbott and
Costello would’ve been proud . The first
choice never it to Knoxville, doomed largely
by a social media campaign launched by
angry fans. Over the course of a week, the
Vols were turned down by pretty much every-
one they approached (though Ric Flair gra-
ciously offered his services). Then, the ath-
letic director running the search was forced
out as well. Downright desperate, Tennessee
turned to former football coach Phillip
Fulmer as their new AD. Never mind that he
was essentially run out of town a decade ago,
launching a chain of events that got the
school in this mess in the first place. And if
you understand all that, please explain it to
us.

COMEBACK OF THE YEAR: Or
should we call it the Collapse of the Year?
Let’s make it a joint award. Tom Brady and
the New England Patriots certainly deserve
plenty of kudos for their stunning rally in
the first Super Bowl to go to sudden-death
overtime . But they couldn’t have done it
without a big helping hand from the Atlanta
Falcons, who had their first championship
firmly in their grasp until they somehow
found a way to squander a 28-3 lead in the
second half. For a city that has endured so
much sporting heartbreak, this was the cru-
elest blow of all to the A-T-L . “I’m broken
inside,” Falcons safety Ricardo Allen said.
“I’ll probably never forget this. It will
always be haunting.”
ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: At the risk
of stirring things up a bit, our final award
goes to a guy who didn’t take the field at all
after the first day of 2017. Colin Kaepernick
was essentially blackballed by the NFL over
his take-a-knee protest during the national
anthem, but he sparked a much-needed focus
on police brutality and social justice. The
message got totally off track after President
Trump weighed in , saying the NFL should
ban any player who refuses to stand during
“The Star-Spangled Banner.” But let’s not
forget that Kaepernick was trying to make
this country a better place with his non-vio-
lent gesture, and he’s the only one who’s
paid a severe price for this simple act of defi-
ance.

SHOOTING WOES
The Cavs’ 31.8-percent shooting was the
lowest by a Warriors opponent in nearly four
years, since Charlotte shot 31.2 percent
from the field on Feb. 4, 2014.
“We just didn’t make shots,” Lue said.
A REAL RIVALRY
Sure, this one felt a little strange without
Curry or Kyrie Irving, now in Boston.
“Golden State-Cavaliers, that’s a big
game, no matter who’s playing, who’s out,”
Lue said.
“It will be weird, without Steph, without
Ky, especially the battles we’ve had over the
last three years. So both teams look differ-
ent.”
Warriors coach Steve Kerr knows just the
uniforms are enough to get everybody going
— and this marked the third straight
Christmas matchup between the franchises,
alternating home floors based on who won
the title.
“It’s always great to play the Cavs, they’re
an awesome team,” Kerr said. “LeBron is so
amazing and it’s so fun to feel the energy in
the building when the two teams get togeth-
er. Neither team will look the same as we
will even a month from now because Steph
and Isaiah Thomas both should be back,
hopefully they’ll both be back. ... But it
doesn’t even matter sometimes, just the two
uniforms in the same building gets people

Study: Self-harm, suicide attempts climb among U.S. girls

CHICAGO — Attempted sui-
cides, drug overdoses, cutting and
other types of self-injury have
increased substantially in U.S.
girls, a 15-year study of emer-
gency room visits found.
It’s unclear why, but some men-
tal health experts think cyberbul-
lying, substance abuse and eco-
nomic stress from the recent reces-
sion might be contributing.
The rising rates “should be of
concern to parents, teachers and
pediatricians. One important rea-
son to focus on reducing self-harm
is that it is key risk factor for sui-
cide,” said Dr. Mark Olfson, a
Columbia University psychiatry
professor who was not involved in
the study.

Older teen girls had the highest
rates — 633 visits per 100,000 in
2015, but the increase after 2008
was less steep.
Drug overdoses and other self-
poisonings were the most com-
mon method among girls and
boys, followed by intentional cut-
ting with sharp objects. The study
doesn’t include information on
which methods were most common
by age nor on how many injuries
were severe or required hospitaliza-
tion.
All the injuries were intentional,
but not all were suicide attempts,
said lead author Melissa Mercado,
a behavioral scientist.
The study by the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention
was published recently in the
Journal of the American Medical
Association. The trend parallels
rising reports of teen depression
and suicide, the researchers noted.

pace, rising from 228 per 100,000
in 2001 to 346 per 100,000 in
2015.
The results underestimate the
problem since they don’t include
self-injuries treated in doctors’
offices or elsewhere, Mercado said.
Researchers said the findings
underscore the need to beef up pre-
vention efforts including finding
ways to help at-risk kids feel less
isolated and more connected to
their peers, and teaching coping
and problem-solving skills.

Kohn Hsieh characterized the initial
settlement as a “sigh of relief” for offi-
cials, and expressed optimism resolv-
ing the labor strife could improve the
district’s standing among school com-
munity members and voters.
Despite the positive momentum,
officials are not yet out of the woods
regarding the district’s budgetary
issues, which Kohn Hsieh said

featuring violent conflicts between
humans and robots.
“In essence, Bina is a reflection of
how we are talking to her and what we
are trying to teach her,” he said.
While the educator’s interest in the
power of artificial intelligence is evi-
dent, Barry said his other students were
initially less enthusiastic about shar-
ing their lessons with a robot.
He said many students were also
underwhelmed by their earliest interac-
tions and attempts to communicate
with the robot, but grew an apprecia-
tion for Bina48 over the semester.
“There was a notable amount of stu-
dents who didn’t think she was very
smart. But by the end, overwhelming-
ly they thought she had gotten smarter
and was more coherent.”

cially and vote for a parcel tax,” she
said.
The attendance at most of the town
hall sessions was moderate, said Kohn
Hsieh. But for those not able to attend,
an online survey exists to gauge the
perspective of school community
members and voters.
In an email, district spokeswoman
Amber Farinha said town hall discus-
sions circled around the most efficient
fashion of addressing the projected
deficit, potential budget enhance-
ments and identifying parcel tax terms
voters may support.
Kohn Hsieh said following the meet-
ings, officials will synthesize the
comments and questions from school
community members and present them
again at a later school board meeting.
Beyond the need for the tax to
address the projected budget shortfall,
she added the measure could be useful in
boosting per student funding beyond
amounts allocated by the state govern-

the 46th in the nation in dollar-per-
student government spending, further
heightening the need for local tax sup-
port.
“The value of fiscally being able to
raise up our per-pupil spending is sig-
nificant to being able to continue not
just making this a special place, but
improving it,” said Kohn Hsieh.

He said a key step in building the
relationship with students was their
recognition that much of the curricu-
lum was foreign to Bina48, a departure
from their expectation that the robot
would come to the class already pro-
grammed with requisite lessons.
“They started off with nervousness
and uncertainty and ended up with more
comfort,” he said.
The process was not seamless
though, noted Barry, who suggested
more work still needs to be done in
building Bina48’s communication
skills. He said the robot performs well
in conversation styles it is pro-
grammed to recognize, but quickly
falls behind in comprehending the free
flow of actual human discussions.
Barry’s work with Bina48 is not
over, as the robot is slated to return to
the Bay Area for an artificial intelli-
gence conference next year, and stu-
dents are expected to host a discussion
with it.
He said the robot could come back to
his classroom again next year, as he
continues working toward a future he
considers as bright as the artificial
intelligence operating Bina48.
“We are excited to see where it goes
next,” he said.
