0 INTRODUCTION
Science can be defined as the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the
systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through
observation and experiment. In today’s lives we can see that through science, our lives
becomes better and easier with many great inventions. In medical sector especially the
science has helped the doctors to find an effective ways to cure diseases. So that it can be
seen science has a great impact in our daily life, hence it is important for us to know and
learns science.
Without realizing, we have been learning science since the early childhood and until
in the middle school. But then, some of the students still cannot grab the concept of the
science. They are always having a misconception about science. Even, a simple concept of
the science, the students cannot remember. There are also some sorts of the students just
remember the concept without understanding it. It can be seen obviously, when they are
given a question of application, they cannot answer it. It shows that the student is not actually
Education from Bachelor of Education in Science would like to organize a program named
"Mad Scientist". The program is name as Mad Scientist as this program involved the students
itself to try various activity through the experiment. So the whole day of the program will
have various activities for student as they will learn through playing. Apart from that, this
program will become a stage for student to apply on what they have learned in the class
through hands on activity. This program will be focusing on hands on activity, which the
students can understand the concept of science easily through playing. The students will
enjoy in playing the games but at the same time they are learning. Besides, this program also
wants to attract the students in learning science in attractive and effective ways. According to

child development theorists also, play is a natural way of learning and necessary for
cognitive, social, and personal development. Thus, they will learn while having fun and the
Apart from that, this program is prepared for 50 students and aligns with our
objective, to make this program as a part of charity; the students are selected from the several
orphanages which located in Shah Alam. The participants will be range on 13 -15 years old.
Besides, the program will take charge by 6 facilitators to make sure this program will achieve
its objective and makes the program smoothly. This program will be organized for one day
starting from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m and this program consists of three slots. The first and second
slot is the educational slots which the students will learns several concept of science and
apply the concept through the hands on activity. The third slot is the invention slot where the
student will cooperate together to invent something new from the given item.
We feel like being called to organize this program because we want to clear the
perception of students that learning science is boring and thus with the interactive activity, it
will help the students become more understand in learning science better. Besides, we also
want the students become more interested toward learning science. With the help of the
wonderful facilitator and our previous experiences in organizing this event, we believe that
we will succeed in achieving the objectives of this program and ultimately will help the

2.0 RATIONALE
The program is relevant in preparing the students become more interested in learning
science and we want to make the student become more understand the concept of science by
applying attractive hands on activity towards the students. Besides, we also want to change
the perception of the students which some of the students feels that science is a boring
subject. Realizing about this matter we construct a day of learning science in an attractive
ways where the student are learning the concept of science while playing. This program is
significant to encourage the student to be fun while learning science. We feel responsible to
make the students understand several concepts of science hence in this program we give the
opportunity to the students to construct a few experiment through various activity related to
the science concept. Moreover, we are also trying to convince the student that science is fun
to learn. Apart from that, we will try to make the student understand the science concept and
let them to explore the science concept in hands on activity. In studying science, the students
must master in both theory and practical. By making the activities practically, hopefully the

Observation
As the result of PT3 was announced last year, it can be seen that the performance in
science is not very good among students. Base on the analysis of Education Minister also the
science result of PT3 and final year’s exam since 2012 getting decrease year by year and this
problem usually occurs is almost all student level. Nowadays it is hard to find a science day
program that is prepared by the students. These lacks of exposure toward science make the
realize that most of the lower form student there gets lower performance in science. This is
corresponding with the analysis from the Education Minister about the result of student in
PT3 and final year’s exam. We discover the reason why the problem happened among the
orphanage student. Because of the problem, we decide to identified the problem happened
among the student form 1, form 2 and form 3. We decide to make the interview among the

Based on the interview conducted, most of the respondent gives negative feedback on
the first question. A lots of student said science is something that boring and hard to
understand. And the second question, a lot of the student said that they never involve or go to
science program. They said that school never makes a program base on the science. And for
the third question, most of student not gives the answer. As we can see, they not interested
with the program that related to science. For the fourth question the most students answer is
they had done the experiment in school but they not understand the related between what they
And for the last question, student said that they want clearer and understand about
science and want know what is important in study science for daily life.
Information Gathering
On 11 November 2015, a meeting was held regarding this growing concern. The
SEEDS committee members and we agreed that some innovation should be made in a science
type of program so that it would attract students and give positive impact to them. However,
based on the information, the student didn’t like something that is boring. So, we come out
with an idea to organize a day with full of interactive activities but at the same time they are
learning. After a few meetings, we come out with the idea of a new science program. This
program should be able to ignite student’s love and attention about science. The program has
to be held at the faculty because we want them to feel comfortable, easy access to attend, and
also making faculty as one of their memorable experience due to the program.
The slot must able to attract student attention, interactive, new knowledge for them
and also give them a meaningful feeling and something that can make them reflects them as a
5
good student in science. In other words, it should motivate student to be a better junior
scientist. The slots of the program should be something that they familiar but didn’t have a
chance doing it. They might have a basic perception or idea on how the activity should be
conducted but not the real procedure. It should be fun but at the same time has lots of deeper
meaning.
The slot will be conducted by experienced facilitator with the observation from the
instructor, so that they are able to fulfill the objectives of the modules. The committee
members also help the conducted program if needed to make the program run smoothly.
Science and technology culture by focusing on the development of individuals who are
competitive, dynamic, robust, and resilient, and able to master scientific knowledge and
technological competency.
Our Philosophy
A line with NSEP, we are dedicated to attract the student's interest in learning science. In
effort to develop individual who mastering the concept of science, we are adapting interactive
and effective learning to the students, and thus ensuring students to born as well-rounded

Learning outcome:
Explore what will happen if two different mixtures are mix together
The first educational slot is the interactive learning I. The name of this slot is “All About
the Chemical Reaction”. In this first activity, we want to grab the student’s attention first with
the chemical reaction activity as the chemical reaction will produce fizzing, and bubbling
reaction hence can make the learning fun. Basic scientific experiments provide wonder for
students, engaging their senses and enhancing their natural curiosity while allowing them to
investigate and learn more about the world around them. For this slot, we have included two
activities which are the sand box volcano and homemade lava land.
The sand box volcano will be the first activity. Students have been learning about
eruptions before, and see the volcano eruptions in the television. So in this activity, the
students are given opportunity to build the volcano from the sand and see lively the eruptions,
when they are mixing several kinds of chemicals. The volcano is built from the sand, while
the lava is from the mixing of vinegar and baking soda. Through this activity, the students
will be more understand about how the volcano eruption works closely. Besides, the students
9
also will discover on how to make an awesome sandbox volcano eruption. The science
concept behind this activity is about the volume. In order to make an awesome eruption, the
students have to ideally add between the baking soda and vinegar. So in this activity the
students will repeat severally in order to get exact amount of vinegar and baking soda needed.
Hence the students have been working on simple science concepts. Repeating similar types of
experiments will builds knowledge and reinforces learning skills. Students actually need
simple concepts repeated for greater understanding. This activity will build confidence for
Next, the second activity is homemade lava lamp. Through this activity, the students will
be able to discover the science concept which is the difference between the oil and water
density. In this activity, students will explore the chemical reaction and at the same time the
science concept behind it which is density. This activity requires the student to mix oil, food
coloring and the Seltzer tablet is added to make the reaction vigorously. The students’ needs
to observe the changes that happen. When the lava lamp chemical reaction slows down, the
students need to add another tablet to the lava lamp. The students need to observe whether the
colored water moving up through the oil or not. When the student observes and raises
questions, this gets the students thinking. The process of learning will be more effective.
From this activity it can be conclude that difference density of liquid makes it to disperse

Slot 2: Interactive Learning II
Learning outcomes:
Discover the science concept that are used in simple machine which are work and
levers
The second slot is the interactive learning II. The name of this slot is “All About Simple
Machine”. In this slot the students’ needs to explore how the simple machines are works and
how the machine does for us. In this slot there will be two activities which are the homemade
The first activity is the homemade pulley. Pulleys are simple machine that can help us
lift things easier. The activity requires the students to construct a pulley with two bucket and
rope. Then the students are going to explore which pulley are easier to lift up the bucket,
whether the one wheel pulley or two wheel pulley. Firstly, the students’ needs to used rock to
fill the bucket. Then the facilitator will asked the students to lift up the bucket filled with
rocks without using pulley. It must be difficult to them to lift up the bucket from one place to
another. Then, the facilitators ask the students to use pulley to lift up the bucket. At first, the
one wheel pulley is used. Next the students will used two wheel pulleys to lift up the bucket
if possible. The pulley wheels is put one at the end one at the top. The two wheel pulley will

reduce the weight of the load, when lifting the load. This time when the student are pulling
the rope down the buckle will go up. This is how the pulley works. The students will observe
The second activity is the homemade lever. A lever is a simple machine that can be
used to lift heavy objects, as well as to make it easier to do other kinds of physical work. A
lever gives the user a mechanical advantage by multiplying the effort the user puts in. Some
examples of levers in daily live are seesaws, scissors, and wheelbarrows. All levers have the
same functional components, but different classes of levers vary in where the components are
located. In this activity, the students have to explore on how to lift and balance the object. In
this activity, the students are require to build their own lever using a ruler, tape, and a bar of
soap, and then use their lever to explore how it can lift a load. The science concept behind
this activity is, when the distance between the effort force and the fulcrum is greater, more

Slot 3: Innovative Learning
Learning outcomes:
Apply the concept of science in making the balloon rocket travel faster.
The last slot of this program is all about creating and exploring. For the earlier slots, the
students have seen how science works through the hands on activity. Now it is the time to set
the students to explore, discover, and invent a new thing. This slot will encourage the
students in problem solving, and engineering. In this slot, a competition is held for the
students. The students have to be creative and innovative in order to make the invention
works effectively. The students also will observe how the balloon rocket works. The science
concept behind this balloon rocket race is about the air and thrust. As the air rushes out of the
balloon, it creates a forward motion called thrust. Thrust is a pushing force created by energy.
In the balloon rocket race, the thrust comes from the energy of the balloon forcing the air out.
Different sizes and shapes of balloon will create more or less thrust. In a real rocket, thrust is
created by the force of burning rocket fuel as it blasts from the rockets engine and as the
engines blast down the rocket goes up. Hence through this game, the students will use their
creativity align with the science concepts in making the rockets travel faster.

3.7 Methodology
As stated in the objective, this program involved the students learning while playing. Every
slot in the program allowed the students to learn while doing the hands on activity. The
methodology that is used in this program is the cooperative and collaborative learning. This is
because after the registration, the student will be in group of ten and they will assist by
facilitator. Then they will do the hands on activity together. Working in groups has numerous
benefits. Firstly when the students doing the activity together, it will enhance the
communication and social skill. Apart from that, learning will be more effective as the
students will collaborate together to solve the activity and the given problem.
3.8 Evaluation
An evaluation form will be distributed to all students at the end of the program.
Students have to answer it according to what they feel throughout the program. From the
form, it can be seen whether the program has succeed in reaching its objectives of changing
the students’ perception on the science subject. It can also be seen that whether the program
is suitable to overcome the program or not. If it is, the same program can be held in the
future. We can see the flaw of the student opinion and fix it for next program.
