13th Sunday of Ordinary Time - A

First Reading: 2 Kings (4:8-11, 14-16) | Second Reading: Romans (6:3-4, 8-11) Gospel: Matthew (10:37-42)

General Introduction: - Do not read this line

We are called to discipleship, but to fulfill that calling seems to be a bit of a

dichotomy. (Pronunciation - DI-COT-TOMY). We hear in today’s readings that we
can only find our lives by losing them, and we can only live by dying. In order to
experience the enduring resurrection in our lives we must be willing to take up the Cross
of being a Christian in what we do and how we live. This is how we truly follow Jesus.

Introduction to the First Reading: - Do not read this line

The First Reading is drawn from the Second Book of Kings. This reading is filled with
hope, but it also is a reminder of God and salvation. Elisha reminds us that as stewards
we are called to lead God-centered lives, even when that may seem impossible or
difficult.

Introduction to the Second reading: - Do not read this line

St. Paul goes to a different level in the Second Reading from his letter to the Romans.
What Paul calls us to do is dramatic and life changing. We cannot die and rise again
without it changing our life. Our death with Christ is real in a spiritual way. We must
think of ourselves as dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus. That is what living
God-centered lives entails.

Prayer of the Faithful – For the Celebrant

Cel: Prophet Elisha rewarded the woman who provided him food and
lodging with the promise of a child for which the woman earnestly desired
and prayed. Jesus promises reward for acts of kindness such as even offering
a glass of cold water done in his name. Let us place our intentions before the
Lord firmly trusting in his bountiful mercy, saying.

Response: Lord, increase your good works in us.

Prayer after Prayer of Faithful

Cel: God our Father, we thank you for the gift of your Son Jesus, who through
his tireless instruction transformed the hapless fisher folk of Galilee into able
administrators of the nascent Church both spiritually and materially. Give us
the grace that with the knowledge we gain with regard our faith and secular
matters we may grow up into able men and women who can bring about the
much needed transformation in society. We make this prayer through Christ
our Lord. AMEN.
