Workshop on “Extraction and Isolation of Phytoconstituents”- Report

A 2 day Workshop on “Extraction and Isolation of Phytoconstituents” was held on 9-10 Dec.
2017 at Medicinal Natural Products Research Laboratory (MNPRL), Department of
Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology, at Institute of Chemical Technology, Matunga,
MUMBAI. The workshop covered practical aspects of herbal drug extraction and isolation using
lab scale to pilot scale extractor. During the workshop within 2 days, more than 14
Phytoconstituents were extracted, isolated and characterized which included, alkaloids,
glycosides, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenyl propanoids, tannins, flavor compounds, etc. Identity
and purity of isolated phytoconstituents were evaluated by TLC/HPTLC, GC/HPLC, etc.

The workshop was attended by 24 delegates from pharmacy, botany, and ayurvedic colleges and
institutions like Institute of Science, Nair hospital, University college of Pharmaceutical Sciences
(Warangal), DIPSAR, Delhi, Annamalai University (Tamilnadu) etc. We also had industry
personnel from Ultra International Ltd. (Delhi), Anchrom Enterprises Pvt Ltd and JKH Exports
from Mumbai, Sunita Hydrocolloids Pvt Ltd. (Rajashthan). The participants actively participated.
The workshop was well received and deliberations were shared on technical and scientific aspect
of extraction and isolation techniques which everyone felt will be useful.
