Sam Jewison Long Biography, 2017

Praised as a ‘fully rounded musician’ (Next BRIT Thing), Sam Jewison is a vocalist, pianist and conductor, based
in London. He holds a BMus (first-class honours) from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, where he
continues training under Lynton Atkinson and Anna Tilbrook on the MMus course (Kathleen Creed Scholar).

Sam represented Trinity Laban at the Kathleen Ferrier Bursary 2014 giving a ‘Highly Commended’ performance.
Subsequently, he was a finalist in the TL English Song and Elisabeth Schumann Lieder competitions. Recent roles
include: Gabriel von Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus/PuzzlePiece Opera) and Carissimi’s Jeptha (Stephen
Jackson/TLCC - Brandenburg Choral Festival), in addition to creating Sylvian Beauclerc in Louis Mander's The Rue
Morgue (OperaUpClose - King's Place) and Apollo in Matthew Hall's Cantata. In 2015, Sam was the tenor soloist
in the British premiere of Judith Bingham's A Bird is Singing at the BASCA British Composer Awards, held at the
BFI Southbank and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Most recently, he performed Op. 53 No. 3 Der Arme Peter and Op.
24 Liederkreis in the TL Schumann Series, prepared by Eugene Asti.

An ‘M.D. professional beyond his years’ (NODA), operatic credits include: Berkeley’s A Dinner Engagement (Opera
Dinamica), Menotti's The Medium (Clockwork Opera) and Puccini’s Suor Angelica (Opera in the Meantime).
Orchestral premieres include, Vasileios Filippou's Equilibrium (2015) and Harry Palmer’s Water Aspects (2017).
In 2016, he conducted the Sam Jewison Orchestra’s debut concert, The Cole Porter Story, at Blackheath Halls.
This initial sell-out performance was followed by appearances at South Kensington’s Polish Hearth Club,
Westminster Abbey and the Jazz Café, the latter celebrating the music of Frank Sinatra. The orchestra returned to
Blackheath Halls in February 2017 with The Great American Songbook.

As a jazz pianist and singer, his eponymous trio prompted reviews noting their ‘unique rapport’ as musicians ‘who
play so well together that you’d think they’d been playing as a group for decades’. Sam holds a jazz residency at
the Grand Caffè Concerto, Shepherd’s Bush and gives solo concerts nationwide, including an annual appearance
at Jazz at the Assembly Rooms in Faversham. An avid chamber musician, Sam regularly accompanies singers and
instrumentalists, including a longstanding partnership with violinist Rosie Judge, most recently performing at the
Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

Born in Scarborough in 1994, Sam began singing under Evelyn Halford and in the ensuing years enjoyed solo
appearances with the Scarborough Choral Society, at the Sage Gateshead and the Scarborough Open Air Theatre.
He started conducting season-length musicals in 2010 with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, followed by The Wizard
of Oz and Musicality. His many contributions to music in Scarborough resulted in Sam being awarded the Borough
Thank You Award for Performing, Artistic and Cultural Endeavours in 2012.
