An  Introductory  Halal  Awareness  Course  
 
The  Halal  industry  globally  is  worth  nearly  $3  Trillion  and  heavily  influences  the  life  of  some  1.8  million  people,  yet  
the  fundamental  concepts  of  Halal  are  not  widely  understood  even  amongst  Muslims.  This  Introductory  Aware-­‐
ness  Course  to  Halal  is  the  first  unit  in  an  all  encompassing  curriculum  to  Halal  to  be  offered  by  EdTrIn  and  the  
Halal   Industry   Development   Corporation   of   Malaysia   and   serves   as   a   general   introduction   to   what   exactly   Halal   is  
and  a  foundation  for  further  study.        
 
 
Course  Objectives  and  Learning  Outcomes:  
 
Halal  is  any  object  or  an  action  which  is  permissible  to  use  or  engage  in,  according  to  Islamic  law.  The  term  covers  
and  designates  not  only  food  and  drink  but  also  all  matters  of  daily  life.    
 
The  main  aim  of  the  course  is  a  provide  a  basic  knowledge  of  Halal  and  Haram  in  the  following  key  areas:  
 
• Understand  the  general  concept  of  Halal  and  Haram  
• Understand  the  justifications  within  Islam  on  the  importance  of  the  Halal  /  Haram  principle  to  Muslims  
• Understand  concepts  of  halal  food  and  ingredients  
• Application  of  the  concepts  of  halal  to  specific  foods  
• Understand  Halal  slaughtering  
 
The   learning   outcomes   go   beyond   simply   reciting   facts.   Learners   will   be   asked   to   apply   the   course   information   to  
examples/scenarios.  
 
Content:  
 
• The  content  has  been  approved  by  HDC.  
• The  content  will  be  edited  for  suitability  to  an  online  learning  environment,  and  to  ensure  broadest  literacy  
level  understanding  and  geographical/cultural  relevance.  The    
• Content  will  be  based  on  the  assumption  that  learners  have  little  or  no  previous  knowledge  of  Halal.  
• Additional  quizzes  and  activities  will  be  added  to  test  learners  understanding  of  content.  
• No  external  assessment  of  knowledge  or  competency.  
 
Length:  
The  estimated  average  student  completion  time  of  this  course  is  approximately  60  minutes,  including  the  content,  
interactive  activities,  and  quizzes.  
 
 
Delivery:  
 
The  course  will  delivered  online  and  will  require  the  use  of  a  PC  or  a  mobile  device  (Tablet  of  large  format  Smartphone).
