NOTICE: We are in the process of switch-
ing recycle material haulers to prevent the
overflowing dumpster caused by a missed
pick-up on the prior day. A similar problem
is that we have residents that are leaving
materials outside of the dumpster when it is
full. If the dumpster can not fit any more re-
cyclables, please do not drop them off. The
appearance of the clubhouse trash corral go-
ing forward will determine if we decide to
continue this program.

Creating Winter Interest in Your Landscape

Winter is here! Although the lush and colorful spring and summer plants have
faded, the winter landscape has a beauty of its own through texture, color and
movement. I have listed some plants that provide winter interest which might help
appreciate our winter in a new way! First are the evergreens which moved to the
forefront in winter. These trees provide food and cover for birds. Also, there are
ground cover evergreens that provide some green, such as low growing junipers,
evergreen ferns, wild ginger and hellebores.
Other plants of interest are:

Exfoliating Bark

There are small trees and shrubs that have

peeling bark and is prominent in the winter. The
peeling and curling bark often has a different
color below which adds an extra layer of dramatic
interest. Look for River Birch, Cornelian Cherry,
Kalm St. Johnswort and Lacebark Pine.

Colorful Stems, Twigs and Berries

Planting one or two deciduous shrubs with

colorful bark is an easy way to add color in
the winter. Look for red or yellow twig
Dogwoods, which looks good individually or
together and near evergreens, Red and
Black Chokeberries, Winterberry, a native
holly, and Witch hazel, Viburnums,
Crabapples and Sumac. These also
provide berries for feeding songbirds.
8
Perennials and Grasses

There are many perennials that

retain their form and stay upright
and strong in winter despite heavy
snow. These plants provide food
for the songbirds. Some of these
are popular in gardens in the
summer: Brown Eyed Susan,
Coneflowers and Liatris.

Grasses add texture and

movement and look great planted
near evergreens. They also
provide food and shelter for birds.
The best for winter are: Northern
Sea Oats, Switch Grasses,
Feather Reed Grass, Prairie
Dropseed and the Bluestems.

Adding some of these to your landscape will definitely improve the view of winter
from your window!
