New Year Greetings from IPRH
I would like to wish IPRH readers a very happy and prosperous New Year 2018.
The year 2017 has been an important year for Homeopathy. In this year we witnessed some of
the best research studies so far, some of the strongest allegations, mutually agreed international
projects and most importantly political turmoil at international level. This has proven that the
challenges are rising proportionally to our growth. The challenge and criticism can only be
tackled if we aim to work with self-consciousness, acceptability and close association.
At this point in time, our approach must not be centred to improve the popularity of
homeopathy alone, but to enhance its reach to every segment of society with proven scientificity.
We need research! The research that is oriented to report the actual facts, and not the positive
findings only. Our success stories need to be translated into validated evidence. We need to reach
to practitioners and motivated them to come out of their shells and contribute towards the
success of homeopathy by contributing evidence.
At every front, be it research, practice or teaching we apply four basic rules - baseline teaching,
experience, experimentation and intuition. Over the decades we have strengthened our teaching
and experience but grossly neglected the research part, therefore, there is a gap between the
teaching, preaching, practising and experimentation. We are still taught to believe our science as a
religion and not a scientific battleground where we must fight and win.
The time is not far when we would be answerable to the community at large and also to
ourselves. We must be well prepared because “The Adventure has Begun” and we must “Take a Leap
of Faith and Begin This Wondrous New Year by Believing” and take the road less travelled to explore
the unexplored, to see the unseen, to discover the hidden, and to validate Homeopathy as a
Plausible Science.

Current Scenario
In homeopathic clinical practice, we are challenged with variables, and one such variable is the
quantity of a dose. Although it has been clearly mentioned in our literature about the concept of
minimum dose, this is usually adopted in various ways when applied in clinical practice. The
amount/quantity of a dose differs in different settings despite following the Law of Minimum.
It is equally right that a single dose is the minimum quantity of a medicinal substance to arouse
the vitality of the patient, but the minimum dose is quantified differently in different settings.
This might be influenced by factors such as:
 Baseline teaching
 Experience
 Influence
 Etc.
For example, a physician may dispense one drop of a medicine while another dispense four drops
of the same medicine for a similar condition. In both instances, they follow the law of Single-
Minimum Dose, but the quantification is different.
It is also argued that the quantity of homeopathic medicines does not play an important role
because whatever quantity is given as one dose is considered minimum and single. This might not

be applicable in clinical settings where mother tinctures, biochemics etc. are prescribed
frequently.

In vivo evaluation of antipyretic effects of some homeopathic ultra-high
dilutions on Baker's yeast-induced fever on Similia principle.

Abstract
Background: Homeopathy is a controversial alternative system of medicine. The action of
homeopathic medicines is considered slow and it is assumed that homeopathic medicines are
ineffective in acute conditions such as fever.
Objective: In the present study, effects of 3 homeopathic medicines on baker's yeast induced
fever were investigated.
Materials and methods: 42 local strain rabbits were equally divided into 7 groups. Normal
saline was orally administered to group 1 (normal control) rabbits without fever induction. Group
2 underwent baker's yeast-induced fever (negative control). Groups 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 underwent
baker's yeast-induced fever and were thereafter treated orally with paracetamol, Nux vomica

200C and 1M, Calcarea phos 200C and Belladonna 200C respectively. Rectal temperature was
checked hourly. The abdominal writhing and frequency of loose stools were also monitored.
ANOVA was applied for checking statistical significance. p ≤ 0.05 was considered significant.
Results: The rectal temperature increased significantly (p < 0.05) in the negative control group
when compared to the normal control. Abdominal writhing and loose stools monitoring showed
increased writhing and loose stools frequency of group 2, 3, 6 and 7 rabbits. However, treatment
of paracetamol significantly reduced rectal temperature. Group 4 & 5 showed significant
reduction of rectal temperature together with abatement of abdominal writhing and loose stools.
Conclusion: N. vomica ultra-high dilutions have normalized rectal temperature and prevented
the abdominal writhing and loose stools in baker's yeast-induced fever model of rabbits. It could
be due to antidotal activity of N. vomica ultra-high dilutions. Therefore, N. vomica ultra-high
dilutions can be useful antipyretic agents and can treat conditions associated with gastrointestinal
symptoms. However, fixed conclusion can't be asserted due to caveat of small sample size.

Beneficial immunomodulatory and neuro digestive effect in Trypanosoma

cruzi infection after Lycopodium clavatum 13c treatment.

Abstract
Studies show that highly diluted medications demonstrate benefits in treating infections,
constituting an alternative for their treatment. The present study evaluated the effects of
Lycopodium clavatum, dynamization 13c, in Wistar rats infected with T. cruzi. In this study 42
male rats were intraperitoneally inoculated with T. cruzi - Y strain and allocated into groups: IC
(infected control group) and Ly (treated with L. clavatum 13c). The cytokines dosage (IFN-γ, IL-
12, IL-10, IL-4), quantification and morphometry of myenteric neurons were evaluated. The
treatment with L. clavatum modifies the immune response, with increase of IFN-γ on day 10 a.i.
and IL-12 on day 24 a.i., decrease of IL-10 concentration on day 10 a.i. and subsequent increase
of this cytokine and IL-4 on day 24 a.i., affording a bigger number of myenteric neurons
compared to IC group. Thus, L. clavatum 13c promoted on rats infected with T. cruzi a
beneficial immunomodulatory action reducing the pathogenic progression of digestive Chagas
disease.

M1 homeopathic complex trigger effective responses against Leishmania (L)

amazonensis in vivo and in vitro.

Abstract
Leishmaniasis is a term referring to a range of clinical conditions caused by protozoan parasites
of the genus Leishmania, Trypanosomatidae family, Kinetoplastida order that is transmitted by
the bite of certain species of mosquitoes Phlebotominae subfamily. These parasites infect hosts
wild and domestic mammals, considered as natural reservoirs and can also infect humans.
Leishmania are obligate intramacrophage protozoa that have exclusively intracellular life style.
This suggests that the amastigotes possess mechanisms to avoid killing by host cells. Cutaneous
leishmaniasis, the most common form of the disease, causes ulcers on exposed parts of the body,
leading to disfigurement, permanent scars, and stigma and in some cases disability. Many studies
concluded that the cytokines profile and immune system of host have fundamental role in
humans and animals natural self-healing. Conventional treatments are far from ideals and the
search for new therapeutic alternatives is considered a strategic priority line of research by the
World Health Organization. A promising approach in the field of basic research in homeopathy
is the treatment of experimental infections with homeopathic drugs prepared from natural
substances associations highly diluted, which comprise a combination of several different
compounds considered as useful for a symptom or disease. Therefore, this study aimed to
evaluate the effect of M1, a complex homeopathic product, in macrophage-Leishmania
interaction in vitro and in vivo. It was used RAW cells lineage and BALB/c mice as a host for the
promastigotes of L. amazonensis (WHOM/BR/75/Josefa). Several biochemical and
morphological parameters were determined. Together, the harmonic results obtained in this study
indicate that, in general, the highly diluted products trigger rapid and effective responses by living
organisms, cells and mice, against Leishmania, by altering cytokines profile, by NO increasing
(p<0.05), by decreasing parasitic load (p<0.001), and modifying classical maturation and
biogenesis of parasitophorous vacuoles (p<0.001). M1 complex decreased endocytic index
(p<0.001), and the % of infected macrophages (p<0.05), preventing the development of lesions
(p<0.05) caused by L. amazonensis by increasing Th1 response (p<0.05). Therefore the
M1complex can be a good candidate for a complementary therapy to conventional treatments,
since all the parameters observed in vitro and in vivo improved. It could be an interesting clinical
tool in association to a classical anti-parasitic treatment, maybe resulting in better quality of life to
the patients, with less toxicity.

Therapeutic potential of HIV nosode 30c as evaluated in A549 lung cancer

Abstract
Objectives: To examine if HIV nosode in 30c dilution (HIV 30c) has therapeutic potential
against lung cancer cells (A549) as compared to WRL-68 normal cells and to elucidate its possible
molecular mechanism of action on DNA replication and apoptosis.

Methods: Effects of HIV 30c were thoroughly tested for its possible anticancer potential on
A549 cells (lung cancer); WRL-68 normal liver cells served as control. Three doses, one at LD50
and two below LD-50, were used. Proliferation, migration and senescence assays were made and
generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) studied by routine techniques. The ability of HIV
30c to induce apoptosis in A549 cells and its possible signalling pathway were determined using
immunoblots of relevant signal proteins and confocal microscopy, including studies on
telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) and topoisomerase II (Top II) activities, intimately
associated with cell division and DNA replication.
Results: HIV 30c prevented cancer cell proliferation and migration, induced pre-mature
senescence, enhanced pro-apoptotic signal proteins like p53, bax, cytochrome c, caspase-3 and
inhibited anti-apoptotic signal proteins Bcl2, TERT and Top II, changed mitochondrial
membrane potential and caused externalization of phosphatidyl serine. Thus, it induced apoptosis
as also evidenced from increase in cells with distorted membrane morphology, nuclear
condensation, DNA fragmentation, and ROS, typical of apoptosis in progress.
Conclusion: HIV 30c nosode has therapeutic potential for inducing cytotoxic effects on A549
cells as manifested by changes in nuclear condensation, DNA fragmentation, ROS generation
and MMP, and for its inhibitory action on cell proliferation, cell migration, expression of
telomerase reverse transcriptase and Top II genes, and increasing expression of pro-apoptotic
genes.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance characterization of traditional

homeopathically manufactured copper (Cuprum metallicum) and plant
(Gelsemium sempervirens) medicines and controls

Abstract
Background: NMR proton relaxation is sensitive to the dynamics of the water molecule H2O,
through the interaction of the spin of the proton (1H) with external magnetic and
electromagnetic fields.
Methods: We measured dilution and potentization processes through measurements of 1H spin-

lattice T1 and spin–spin T2 relaxation times. In order to interpret the recorded fluctuations in
T1- or T2-values, experimental data were linearized by investigating how the area under a
fluctuating time = f(dilution) curve (dilution integral or DI) changes with dilution. Two kinds of
fitting procedures were considered: chi-square fitting with a goodness-of-fit probability, and least
absolute deviations criterion with Pearson's linear correlation coefficient.

Results: We showed that fluctuations are not attributable to random noise and/or experimental
errors, evidencing a memory effect quantifiable by the slope of the DI = f(dilution) straight line.
For all experiments, correlation coefficients were found to lie above 0.9999, against 0.999 for
random noise. The discrimination between experimental slopes and slopes associated with
random noise data was very good at a five-sigma level of confidence (i.e. probability 3 × 10−7).
Discrimination between experimental slopes at a five-sigma level was possible in most cases, with
three exceptions: gelsemium aqua pura v gelsemium dilution (four-sigma); copper aqua pura v
gelsemium aqua pura (four-sigma) and copper simple dilution v gelsemium simple dilution (three-
sigma). All potentized samples show very good discrimination (at least nine-sigma level) against
aqua pura, lactose or simple dilution. It was possible to transform the associated relaxation times
into a molecular rotational correlation time τc and an average spin–spin distance d. Our
experiments thus point to a considerable slowing down of molecular movements (τc > 1300 ps
or T = 224–225 K) around water molecules up to a distance of 3.7 Å, values. It was also possible
to rule out other possible mechanisms of relaxation (diffusive motion, 17O-1H relaxation or
coupling with the electronic spin, S = 1, of dissolved dioxygen molecules).
Conclusion: There is clear evidence that homeopathic solutions cannot be considered as pure
water as commonly assumed. Instead, we have evidenced a clear memory effect upon
dilution/potentization of a substance (water, lactose, copper, gelsemium) reflected by different
rotational correlation times and average H⋯H distances. A possible explanation for such a
memory effect may lie in the formation of mesoscopic water structures around nanoparticles
and/or nanobubbles mediated by zero-point fluctuations of the vacuum electromagnetic field as
suggested by quantum field theories. The existence of an Avogadro's ‘wall’ for homeopathically-
prepared medicines is not supported by our data. Rather it appears that all dilutions have a
specific material configuration determined by the potentized substance, also by the chemical
nature of the containers, and dissolved gases and the electromagnetic environment. This
sensitivity of homeopathically-prepared medicines to electromagnetic fields may be amplified by
the highly non-linear processing routinely applied in the preparation of homeopathic medicines.
Future work is needed in such directions. The time is now ripe for a demystification of the
preparation of homeopathic remedies.

Homeopathic treatment as an alternative prophylactic to minimize bacterial
infection and prevent neonatal diarrhea in calves.

Abstract
Bovine neonatal diarrhea is common due low immunity in newborn calves, poor management (or
absence) of sanitary barriers, and other factors. Newborn calves with diarrhea in the first days of
life suffer failure to thrive and may die if left untreated. The aim of this study was to evaluate
whether prophylactic administration of a homeopathic product (Dia 100®) can control bovine
neonatal diarrhea in calves born on a farm with substantial sanitary challenges. We counted total
bacteria and protozoan parasites in fecal samples. We measured serum glucose, total protein,
globulin, albumin, cholesterol and triglycerides on days 1, 7 and 14 of life. Twenty newborn
calves were maintained in individual stalls, and were divided in two groups: ten untreated animals
(control) and ten animals treated with Dia 100®. Fecal consistency was evaluated daily. We
diagnosed diarrhea in five animals in the treated group, and in all animals from the control group.
Infections with Escherichia coli and Giardia duodenalis were identified as the responsible
organisms. The E. coli count was low in the treatment group on day 7 of life compared with the
control group. Antibiotics were given to eight animals in the control group, and to two animals in
the treatment group. On day of life 7, serum levels of total protein and globulins were higher in
the control group, but were lower on day 14. Serum levels of glucose and triglycerides were
greater in treated animals on days 7 and 14, suggesting that the homeopathic product contributes
to improvement of intestinal health and absorption and nutrients. We conclude that Dia 100®
controls diarrhea with 50% of efficacy, and reduces antibiotic utilization.

Model validity of randomised placebo-controlled trials of non-individualised
homeopathic treatment

Abstract
Background: The comprehensive systematic review of randomised placebo-controlled trials
(RCTs) in homeopathy requires examination of a study's model validity of homeopathic
treatment (MVHT) as well as its risk of bias (extent of reliable evidence).
Objective: To appraise MVHT in those RCTs of non-individualised homeopathy that an

associated investigation had judged as ‘not at high risk of bias’.

Design: Systematic review.
Methods: An assessment of MVHT was ascribed to each of 26 eligible RCTs. Another 49 RCTs
were ineligible due to their high risk of bias.
Main outcome measures: MVHT and the prior risk of bias rating per trial were merged to
obtain a single overall quality designation (‘high’, ‘moderate’, ‘low’), based on the GRADE
principle of downgrading.
Results: The trials were rated as ‘acceptable MVHT’ (N = 9), ‘uncertain MVHT’ (N = 10) and
‘inadequate MVHT’ (N = 7); and, previously, as ‘reliable evidence’ (N = 3) and ‘non-reliable
evidence’ (N = 23). The 26 trials were designated overall as: ‘high quality’ (N = 1); ‘moderate
quality’ (N = 18); ‘low quality’ (N = 7).
Conclusion: Of the 26 RCTs of non-individualised homeopathy that were judged ‘not at high
risk of bias’, nine have been rated ‘acceptable MVHT’. One of those nine studies was designated
‘high quality’ overall (‘acceptable MVHT’ and ‘reliable evidence’), and is thus currently the only
reported RCT that represents best therapeutic practice as well as unbiased evidence in non-
individualised homeopathy. As well as minimising risk of bias, new RCTs in this area must aim to
maximise MVHT and clarity of reporting.

Treatment of Postoperative Sore Throat With the Aid of the Homeopathic
Remedy Arnica montana: A Report of Two Cases.

Abstract
We present 2 cases of severe postoperative sore throat, hoarseness, aphonia, and dysphagia, after
a laryngeal mask insertion, who were treated successfully with the homeopathic remedy Arnica
montana. Three doses of Arnica montana 200CH were given to the patients over 36 hours.
Although the symptoms were very intense, the remedy was very effective and cleared most of the
symptoms in 48 hours.

Homeopathic Treatment of Vitiligo: A Report of Fourteen Cases.

Abstract
Background: Vitiligo, also known as leukoderma, is an autoimmune skin condition that results
in the loss of melanin pigment. Vitiligo is not a rare condition but is difficult to treat and is
associated with psychological distress.
Case Report: A series of 14 cases of vitiligo are presented that were treated with individualized
homeopathic remedies that were based on plant, animal, or mineral compounds. There were 13
women and one man in the case series, with a mean age 29.8 years, and a mean follow-up from
treatment of 58 months. The mean time between the onset of the appearance of vitiligo and the
first consultation at our clinic was 96 months. Homeopathic treatment for patients is holistic and
was performed on an individualized basis as described in this case series. Photographic images of
the skin are presented before and after treatment.
Conclusion: In 14 patients with vitiligo treated with individualized homeopathy, the best results
were achieved in the patients who were treated in the early stages of the disease. We believe that
homeopathy may be effective in the early stages of vitiligo, but large controlled clinical studies are
needed in this area.

Integrative Treatment of Chronic Abdominal Bloating and Pain Associated

With Overgrowth of Small Intestinal Bacteria: A Case Report.

Abstract
Context: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is commonly defined as an increased
number of bacteria and/or an abnormal type of bacteria in the small intestine. Conventional
treatment for SIBO is typically focused on antibiotics to eradicate the bacterial overgrowth.
Numerous studies have demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of herbs, and a diet low in
fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) has been shown to
enhance antibiotic therapy.
Objective: The current case study intended to evaluate the benefits of an alternative,
multifaceted approach-including botanical and homeopathic therapies in conjunction with a low-
FODMAP diet-in the treatment of SIBO and its associated symptoms.
Design: The research team performed a case study.
Setting: The study was conducted at SCNM Medical Center (Tempe, AZ, USA).

Participant: The participant was a female patient at the SCNM Medical Center with chronic,
daily, severe abdominal bloating and pain that particularly worsened after meals and by the end of
the day. The patient also had a significant history of chronic constipation that had begun
approximately 10 y prior to her experiencing the daily abdominal pain.
Intervention: Based on a lactulose breath test for hydrogen and methane, the research team
diagnosed the patient with a case of mild SIBO. The treatment approach was multifaceted,
involving a low-FODMAP diet, antimicrobial botanical therapy, and homeopathic medicine.
Results: The patient's abdominal pain and bloating resolved with the treatment of the SIBO,
although her underlying constipation, which was likely associated with other factors, remained.
Conclusions: This case study supports an alternative, multifaceted approach to the treatment of
SIBO and commonly associated symptoms.

Embryonal Carcinoma with Immature Teratoma: A Homeopathic Case

Abstract
Background: Embryonal carcinoma with immature teratoma is a cancer with poor prognosis if
the expression levels of biological markers are very high. In such a case, after surgical removal of
the tumor, homeopathic treatment resulted in maintenance of the cancer-free state for over 6
years.
Case Report: This is the case of a 3-year-old Indian girl diagnosed with embryonal carcinoma
with immature teratoma (after surgery), treated and followed up for over 6 years. She was treated
on the basis of the principles of classical homeopathy and has stayed free of cancer for 6 years
now. Discussion: The cancer marker expression levels dropped while the girl developed severe
skin eruptions, which is in accordance with the laws of classical homeopathic treatment.
Although other examples of successful homeopathic treatment in severe pathologies exist,
further confirmatory studies are needed on a large scale.

Homeopathic treatment for prolonged postoperative coma: a case report.

Abstract:
Coma is the state of unrousable unconsciousness. There are variations in the degree of coma and
the findings and signs found on the patient's clinical examination depend on the underlying cause
of the disorder. The Glasgow Coma scale evaluates the best motor, verbal and eye answers of the
patient. A patient is considered to be in a coma if his Glasgow Coma Scale is below 8 points. The
progress that we have made throughout the years has also led to complications that can culminate
in a major catastrophe like death, permanent brain damage, coma. A study performed reached the
conclusion that prior comorbidity, older age, intraoperative hypotension, and cardiovascular
surgery may predispose patients to postoperative coma. The article presents a case of
postoperative coma treated successfully with homeopathy. Although a rare complication,
postoperative coma is a severe, death-leading condition, causing immense suffering on both the
patient and the patient's family. A multidisciplinary and thorough approach is necessary for these
patients, but even after a well-conducted therapy, this condition leads to the death of the patient.

Remission of Schizoaffective Disorder Using Homeopathic Medicine: 2

Case Reports.

Abstract
Context: Research on the schizophrenia spectrum is primarily focused on pharmaceutical
interventions, although alternative treatments have been gaining increasing popularity in recent
years because patients are seeking treatments that are effective and have reduced side effects. A
significant body of evidence already exists supporting the effectiveness of homeopathy to treat a
wide array of illnesses.
Objective: The research team intended to demonstrate the need for using both alternative and
conventional treatments to improve clinical outcomes in the treatment of schizoaffective
disorder.
Design: The research team performed 2 case studies.
Setting: The study took place at Arizona Natural Health Center (Tempe, AZ, USA), an
outpatient clinic where Dr Tara Peyman worked as a naturopathic doctor from 2008 to 2014.
Participants: The participants were a 23-y-old female (case 1) and a 34-y-old female (case 2),
both of whom had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder of the bipolar type.
Intervention: Individualized homeopathic treatment was initiated for the 2 patients, who
previously had received medication of atypical antipsychotics and mood stabilizers.

Outcome Measures: A Likert scale was used to evaluate the intensity of each patient's
symptoms at each follow-up, based on self-reporting, using a scale from 1 to 10, with a score of
10 being the highest.
Results: During the course of treatment, both patients' symptoms normalized, and they regained
their ability to hold jobs, attend school, and maintain healthy relationships with their families and
partners while requiring fewer pharmaceutical interventions.
Conclusions: The 2 current case reports demonstrate a successful integrative approach to the
treatment of schizoaffective disorder. They illustrate the value of individualized homeopathic
prescriptions with proper case management in the successful treatment of that disorder. Future
large-scale, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies should investigate individualized
homeopathic treatments for mental health concerns, because the diseases cause great economic
and social burden.
Whooping Cough Alleviated by Homeopathic Medicines: A Case Report.

Abstract
Context: Pertussis cough (whooping cough) is distressing due to the intensity and chronicity of
its cough. No specific drugs are available that can alleviate the cough's intensity or significantly
shorten its duration. Homeopathic medicines are used for a wide variety of medical conditions,
including cough.
Objective: The study investigated the benefits of homeopathic medicines for whooping cough,
to alleviate the cough's intensity and to shorten its duration.
Design: The current study was a case series of patients with whooping cough.
Setting: The study took place at one of the suburban hospital clinics of the Ann & Robert H.
Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago (Chicago, IL, USA).
Participants: Participants were 20 patients aged 21 mo to 20 y, of whom 11 were female and 18

were male, who visited the hospital clinic for treatment of the chronic cough that is characteristic
of whooping cough. The details of the cases of 3 representative participants are highlighted in the
text.
Intervention: The 3 representative patients all received 1 dose weekly of a 30c dilution of
homeopathic pertussinum and a 6c dilution of homeopathic Drosera 3 times daily. The
homeopathic medicines most often used for the other participants were the same doses of
pertussinum and Drosera.
Outcome Measures: Verbal feedback from patient or family were obtained at the follow-up
visits.
Results: The intensity and duration of participant's coughs were alleviated within days to 1 wk in
most cases.

Conclusions: Homeopathic medicines can alleviate the intensity or reduce the duration of
whooping cough, with no adverse effects.
Homeopathic therapy for sleep bruxism in a child: Findings of a 2-year case

report.

Abstract
Bruxism is a sleep disorder characterized by grinding and biting teeth with multifactorial etiology,
resulting in deleterious effects on teeth, periodontium, and temporomandibular joint. There is a
lack of scientific evidence evaluating the effectiveness of medicines in treating this parafunction.
The present case report was drafted under the rules of CARE checklist. An 8-year-old male
patient with sleep bruxism and associated symptoms received a combined homeopathic therapy
of Phytolacca decandra 12c and Melissa officinalis 12c for 2 months. After this period of
combined homeopathic therapy, the bruxism and associated symptoms completely disappeared.
After 2 years of clinical follow-ups, the patient had no recurrences. The use of homeopathic
therapy was successful and should be seen as an alternative to treat sleep bruxism and its
associated symptoms in children.
Case reports on integrated management of tubercular disease

Abstract
Background: Host immunity plays an important role in prevention of disease as is evident by
the increased incidence of Tuberculosis (TB) in immuno-compromised population of HIV
infected, diabetes inflicted, immune-suppressant therapy and elderly people. Rising incidence of
antibiotic resistance has led to resurgence of TB of epidemic proportions. Integrated treatment
with add on homeopathy in addition to anti-tuberculosis treatment (ATT) appears to improve
outcome in TB. The intervention has been integrated treatment with homeopathy regime, which
is using a patient specific, disease specific and supportive medicine simultaneously, all
individualized for the patient and the disease.
Cases: Case 1: Pott's spine with paravertebral abscess, not responding to ATT. Addition of
homeopathy led to fall in temperature, improved appetite, increase in weight and reduction of
abscess.
Case 2: Recurrent sub-acute intestinal obstruction. The patient could not tolerate ATT but
responded to homeopathy by reduction of abdominal pain and distension, vomiting, loose stools
and queasiness.
Case 3: Pulmonary TB, treated with both ATT and homeopathy from beginning, led to rapid
recovery and shortened treatment time.

Conclusion: The addition of homeopathy to ATT is patient friendly, cost effective and appears
to reduces the duration of treatment. Its role as immuno-modulatory therapy should be evaluated
and explored.

A review of machines and devices to potentize homeopathic medicines

Abstract
Background: Potentization, consisting of serial dilution and succussion, is a key step in the
manufacture of homeopathic medicines. Originally prescribed as a manual process, several
attempts at mechanization have been published, patented and even commercialised in order to
remove the human element and introduce reproducibility without drudgery. Various machines
have been used over the years to prepare homeopathic medicines. Although these machines
follow the same principles, i.e. energetically mixing the medicines and diluting them significantly,
their mode of operation is different from each other.
Methods: This review paper surveys the main methods of preparation of homeopathic
medicines. The main machines discussed are: Boericke's potentizer, Tyler Kent's instrument,
John Alphonse's machine and the fluxion potentizer, which were used in the past, as well as more
recent potentizers like arm-and-weight instruments, the K-Tronic potentizer and Quinn's
machine. We review the construction and operating principle of each of these machines, along
with their advantages and limitations. A scheme for relative performance assessment of these
machines is proposed based on the parameters mechanical efficiency, physico-chemical
efficiency, turbulence generation, energy dissipation, and accuracy of dilution.

Results: Quinn's machine and the arm-and-weight potentizer perform well for generating
turbulence due to high impaction forces, while John Alphonse's machine is much more accurate
in diluting the homeopathic medicines at every step.
Conclusions: Both the commercial potentizers, Quinn's machine and the K-Tronic potentizer,
are completely automated and therefore reduce the manual labour and variation in succussive
forces during each step, which may produce uniformity in physico-chemical changes within the
resulting homeopathic medicines.
