1. General.- " Clocks Nos. 3, 5 and i ,. a re s.da.y
general- purpose timepieces which have a spring-driven
chiLin and fusee move ment. The movement is
housed in ~~ circular polished ma hoga ny case.
" Clock No. 9 " is similar, but is without glass ami
bezel. The general appearance of t hese clocks is

A simple train of wheels is associated wit h a fusee
(F) which a cts as a. multi-ratio gear t o secure a
uniform motion of the wheels (i.e. t o keep correct
time), whilst the torque d ecreases as the spring in
the barrel (Q) runs down. The spring driving power
is transmitted to the fusee by mea.ns of a. chain (C),
and thence by wheels (W3 and W-!) to the escape
wheel (S). The pallet (J) a ll.nvs the escape wheel to
move r ound one tooth for ov•.·ry swing of the pendu-
lum (P).
3. Tbo }ength of the pendulum r od is designed to
permit a. certain number of escape-wheel teeth to
p ass per minute, the actual number d ependmg on the
design of the wheels. Wheel W3 is couph i directlv

from a cockpiece (B) by means of a very flexible

4. A safety device (L), to prevent overwinding the
spring, is attached t o the pillar plate (A) adja.cent
the chain during the last t wo t urns of its winding,
bringing into operation a positive locking device,
which engages with a stop fixed t o the fusee, and thus
prevents over-winding.
5. The crutch is ma de of soft brass, to permit
bending in the plane of swing of the pendulum. This
operation is sometimM necessary to bring t he clock
into beat.
6. 'l'o expose the movement, remove the wooden
pegs which secure the back of the case.
7. Mounting.- The clock is provided with a con-
cealed mirror-plate suspension and fixing plates fo r
w;dl mounting. j •
8. Winding.-A winding key is supplied with each
·clock.
