What is a Command Team?

A Command Team is comprised of
the Commanding Officer, Executive
Officer, Sergeant Major, Chaplain,
FRO, CO Spouse, SgtMaj. Spouse,
and Family Readiness Advisors.
(Family Readiness Advisors are also
spouses from within the battalion.)
When put together, these key peo-
ple voice their questions, concerns,
suggestions and solutions regard-
ing to the Battalion’s Unit and Fam-
ily Readiness Program. A Combat
Logistics Battalion is always at the
ready. Ready to board a ship at a
moments notice if there is a con-
flict or natural disaster and there is
a need for their assistance. This
means that not only does the Unit
need to be ready but their families
must be prepared as well The top-
ics discussed by the Command
team range from Family Education,
Professional Military Education, to
Unit and Family morale boosting
events for our Active Duty mem-
bers and family members. The mix
of senior Marine leadership along
with seasoned Marine Spouses has
proven to be a balanced combina-
tion that is able to effectively make
solid decisions for the Battalion.
The Command Team meets
monthly to make sure it keeps a
pulse on what our Marines/Sailors
and their families need. If you are

It’s Jellyfish Season!!
It’s Jellyfish season in Okinawa
so keep you eyes open! Jelly-
fish are amongst the most
abundant inhabitants of ma-
rine waters. Most Jellyfish are
equipped with stingers to pro-
cure food and protect them-
selves. While Jellyfish do not
actively attack humans, when
their tentacles come in contact
with human flesh, their sting-
ers are released as part of
their natural defense mecha-
nism.
Even though MOST Jellyfish
stings are completely harmless
to humans and do not pose a
serious risk, it is important to

Headquarters Platoon
At CLB-31, Headquarters Platoon
is comprised the command staff;
CO, XO, Sergeant Major, FRO and
Chaplain as well as several “S-
shops”. Together, these entities
keep the CLB in tip-top shape.
The S1 section provides all ad-
ministrative support to CLB 31 to
include Legal, Promotions,
Awards, Postal, Disbursing and
Personnel. They are also tasked
with handling disbursing and
postal for the entire MEU, quite a
big job.
S-2 provides the Battalions lead-
ers with intelligence information,
Health Service Support Platoon
Health Service Support (HSS) Pla-
toon’s main mission is to ensure
that the 31st Marine Expeditionary
Unit (MEU) is a healthy, fit, and
medically ready deployable force.
HSS Platoon minimizes the effects
that injury and disease may have
on the units’ effectiveness, readi-
ness, and morale through its com-
prehensive Medical and Dental
programs. Additionally, HSS Pla-
toon provides basic medical care to
routine patients and manages the
critical care of casualties through
rapid triage, stabilization, and pa-
tient evacuation.
Recently HSS Platoon took part in
several exercises to prepare for the
31st Marine Expeditionary Unit’s
FALL PATROL 10’. HSS Platoon took
part in Non-Combatant Evacuation
Operations and Mass Casualty Re-
sponse Training during the 31st
MEU’s Evacuation Control Center
(ECC) Exercises. The purpose of
the ECC is to search, clear, process,
and transport evacuees from areas
of natural disasters or political
conflict in which the U.S. State
Department has ordered an
evacuation of U.S. citizens from a

nature. It enables the leaders to
keep abreast of the local political
climate in each country they may
be working in or around.
S-3 is responsible for all training
and operations within the Battal-
ion. They ensure that all training
and missions are planned out and
executed in a smooth manner.
Just as Motor-T keeps our troops
and equipment moving, nothing
moves without the precise plan-
ning and coordination of the S-3.

During the 31st MEU’s ECC exer-
cises drills were executed to test
the service members' skills and
teach them how to deal with ad-
verse scenarios. Some scenarios
included medical emergencies.
During a medical emergency the
main responsibility of a corpsman
on-site at the ECC is to sort and
triage evacuees. A corpsman at the
entrance of the ECC screens people
for illness, and if something is de-
tected, they are escorted to the
medical section for further medical
assistance.
Another common scenario during
ECC training is a mock explosive
detonation in which the corpsmen
have to rapidly identify the injured
and render proper medical aid
based on the condition of the vic-
tim. This scenario helps prepare
the 31st MEU for Nightingale Mis-
sions; missions in which a pre-
organized team of Sailors and Secu-
rity Marines (The Nightingale
Team) respond to Mass Casualty
situations. The Nightingale Team,
which is inserted into the exercise
scenario via helicopter, LCAC, or

The MEU’s training is very impor-
tant to all its members because it
gives all the units Marines and
Sailors a chance to see the MEU’s
elements in motion. From class-
room training you can only grasp so
much. Being out in the field, get-
ting hands-on training, setting up
camp, and actually evacuating pa-
tients really helps the unit to better
understand mission details and
what must be done to function
properly in real-life scenarios. HSS
Platoon trains as if every situation
is real and performs exactly how
they would during real Non-
Combatant Evacuation Operations
(NEO) or Nightingale Missions
Health Service Support Platoon’s
personnel are proud to serve as
part of the 31st MEU. The pla-
toon’s' merit is represented by two
medical officers, one dental officer,
and twenty U.S. Navy Corpsmen.

platoon is part of it all. We
provide Communication to all
the other platoons so they can
keep in touch with our base in
the rear. Over the past couple
of months we've had a lot of
opportunities to become bet-
ter trained in our jobs. At the
beginning of July we went out
to Kin Blue along with the rest
of the Battalion for, what we
call, CLB EX. It is a miniature
op to simulate what we will be
doing while we are deployed.
All of the platoons from the
Battalion go to practice and
become better at what they
already do. As Comm platoon,
we set up what is called an
anthill (ant being short for
antenna) and a command and
control center. That is exactly
what we did on the beach at
kin blue for CLB EX.
We provided comm to every-
one, including range control.
We tested out our Satcom and
high frequency capabilities and
came out with a great
accomplishment. We learned
quite a bit about just how far
HF can go. All the new joins to
the platoon became very well
acquainted with Satcom. Kin
blue was a great success for us
and we were very excited
about it..
The following week we helped
support Command Element in
one of their ops they were
doing to give their guys some
practice in their MOS's as well.
We set up only a miniature
version of our ant hill and got
more familiarized with HPW
and tac chat. We gave and
received classes from our
Command Element and once
again, it was another success-
ful op. This went on for two
weeks. The very next week, we
were tearing down our site
only to set it up again in the S3
shop. We had all sorts of
Comm set up for MEU EX.
Everything from HPW, tac
chat, satcom, the RSAM, the
SWAN and HF. Everything was
up and running within a couple
days. Troubleshooting had to
take place when the weather
became a nuisance but we still
maintained comm throughout
the 2 weeks. We were part of
HST's (helo support training)
where we go with landing
support platoon and we get

We had Marines go on con-
voys to Camp Schwab where
they were doing HADR training
for when we go to the Philip-
pines and other countries. The
Marines that went on this
mission got comm. up where
they were as well with the
Marines that stayed back on
Camp Hansen. It was a suc-
cessful operation and the Ma-
rines got some good training
in. We are now tearing down
the sight at S3 as MEU EX
comes to an end. All the pla-
toons will begin preparation
for boarding the ships. There
will be a lot to pack and get
organized for Comm platoon
but after
all our success over the last
couple of ops, we have the
utmost confidence in getting
done what we need to accom-
plish while on float.

Landing Support Platoon

Landing Support Platoon of CLB-31
garners a lot of questions on what
the infamous Red Patch means. With
all the rumors and jokes aside, it
actually symbolizes the shore parties
of World War LS Marines to distin-
guish them from the landing teams
that were to assault the beaches.
Now, it is still II and was given to the

Marines before them, and as a part
of their military heritage. Present day
LS Marines do everything from load-
ing and unloading ships, conducting
external helicopter lifts, to unloading
and loading every major aircraft in
the United State's fleet of aircraft. On
a day to day basis, the Marines of LS
platoon inspect and re-inspect their
gear to maintain the highest state of
readiness in case the 31st MEU is
called into action. Gear serviceability
is of utmost importance as Marines
and very valuable equipment are at
risk whenever LS is conducting exter-
nal helicopter lifts.
To prepare for the upcoming float, LS
has been conducting serviceability
checks on all their gear and replacing
old and damaged gear with better
more serviceable replacements. LS
has been doing routine inventories to
make sure all the gear is accounted
for, and has been preparing and plan-
ning for the expeditious loading and
unloading of the ships. LS platoon has
also been working on completing
annual training such as the rifle
range, gas chamber, the combat
fitness test and the physical fitness
test. In conjunction with these annual
training requirements that focus on
the physical and shooting aspects of a
Marine's career, the Marines of LS
platoon have been doing regular
classes and yearly training require-
ments at the Learning Resource Cen-
ter.
Along with these training events, the
specialty of LS Marines is conducting
external helicopter lifts. Working in
conjunction with HMM-265 and
HMM-262 here on Okinawa, the
Marines of LS platoon have been
doing weekly training operations with
a variation of loads. Performing these
training operations is essential in
keeping the Marines proficient and
safe in the performance of the duties
they are tasked out with in such a
critical part of their job. These lifts
are done during the day as well as
done in a completely tactical environ-
ment such as night operations with
the aid of night vision goggles. In
actual field environments, these lifts
can provide crucial supplies and tools
to Marines such as chow, ammuni-
tion, water and mail. Working under
a hovering helicopter is an inherently
dangerous task with downwash
winds coming from the rotor blades
on some aircraft clocking in above
200mph. The static electricity gener-
ated by the aircraft can exceed
200,000 volts making the need for
grounding the electricity on the air-
craft an important task before attach-
ing the load.
The Marines of LS platoon all come
from varying backgrounds and it
reflects in the pride and cohesion the
LS is very proud of. The Marines of LS
Platoon are highly motivated profes-
sionals with a work ethic that makes
sure the mission is accomplished no
matter what. Being such a small pla-
toon, the Marines of LS platoon are a
very tight knit family with a lot of
pride in the patches they wear on
covers and trousers.
