Activity Sheet EEM-10B

Objective: To conduct experiments in order to determine how to induce magnetism in a magnetic
substance

ENERGY Note: How can magnetism be created and destroyed?

Materials:
bar magnet
paper clips
iron scissors
Activity 1: Drill
1. How do you think you can get the domains in a magnetic material to line up...creating a
magnet? Give at least 1 idea.

Activity 2: Picture This!!!
2. Look at the picture on the screen. Does this give you any ideas?
Activity 3: Amazing Scissors
3. Read the procedures, “Amazing Scissors.” Highlight the action verbs.

AMAZING SCISSORS

A. Obtain materials from your teacher.

B. Place a handful of paperclips on your table.
C. Hold the scissors above the paperclips.
D. Record your observations in the “Initial Observation”
column of Chart 1, “Magnetic Observations.”
E. Stroke the scissor blades in the same direction several times using the bar magnet.
F. Repeat step C.
G. Record your observations in the “After Stroking” column of Chart 1, “Magnetic
Observations.”
H. Strike the scissors on the table several times.
I. Repeat step C.
J. Record your observations in the “Final Observation” column of Chart 1, “Magnetic
Observations.”
4. Conduct the investigation.

5. Group Discussion Question: Using your observations and what you know about domains, can
you explain what was happening in the scissors activity?

Activity 4: Summary and Extension

In the previous activity you stroked a magnetic material with one pole of a bar magnet to align the
domains inducing magnetism in that material. There are two other ways to induce magnetism,
conduction and induction. Does that sound familiar?

Conduction: Magnetism is induced when a magnetic material comes into direct contact with a
magnet.

Induction: Magnetism is induced when a magnetic material is placed into the magnetic field of a
magnet.

DESTROYING MAGNETISM
In order to remove the magnetic force within a magnetic material you need to cause the domain to
become unaligned. This can occur in several ways.

1. Banging the temporary magnet with a hard object.

2. Heating the temporary magnet.
