Unit 1 : Opinion/ Argumentative Writing
This unit focuses on getting a base level of where your reading and comprehension is. We will
also be working on skimming and scanning reading techniques. Another topic we focus on is
writing short comprehensive, and well structured paragraphs to communicate ideas effectively.
Our grammar topic in this unit will include how to format titles in a text. Lastly, we will go over
the different types of texts that will be covered in this course.
Movie Reviews
This unit will focus on movies! Yay! We will be looking at movie reviews and giving a review of
our own. We will be watching a movie and using our skills in order to analyse the movie. We will
then critique the movie and write a review.
Survey Taking
This unit will focus on what is involved for taking a survey of the community around us. How do
we read statistics and graphs. How do we determine what is important to focus on? How do we
determine what important questions are? This unit will help introduce us to some of the other
units that we will be studying in this course.
We will be working on creating a short informational text in an area that you are interested in.
Next, you will be presenting your information in a variety of different ways, depending on your
PLP.
