Course Description​: This course is designed to help students acquire and demonstrate the
cross-curricular literacy skills that are evaluated by the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test
(OSSLT). Students who complete the course successfully will meet the provincial literacy
requirement for graduation. Students will read a variety of informational, narrative, and graphic
texts and will produce a variety of forms of writing, including summaries, information
paragraphs, opinion pieces, and news reports. Students will also maintain and manage a
portfolio containing a record of their reading experiences and samples of their writing.

Units
Unit 1 : Opinion/ Argumentative Writing
This unit focuses on getting a base level of where your reading and comprehension is. We will
also be working on skimming and scanning reading techniques. Another topic we focus on is
writing short comprehensive, and well structured paragraphs to communicate ideas effectively.
Our grammar topic in this unit will include how to format titles in a text. Lastly, we will go over
the different types of texts that will be covered in this course.

Unit 2: Narrative Texts and Short Stories


This unit will focus on reading narrative texts and short stories. We will be analysing the different
short stories and practice our writing skills. We will also be focusing on what reading strategies
we use while we read through short stories. We will be working at creating our own read-aloud.

Movie Reviews
This unit will focus on movies! Yay! We will be looking at movie reviews and giving a review of
our own. We will be watching a movie and using our skills in order to analyse the movie. We will
then critique the movie and write a review.

Unit 3: Newspaper Articles and Op-Eds


This unit will focus on our newspaper writing skills. We will be practicing writing short articles for
The Beacon, our school’s newspaper, and writing op-ed pieces for any newspaper of your
choice! This is exciting guys. Are you excited? I am!

Unit 4: Data and Informational Texts


This unit will focus on presenting data and informational graphs. How do we analyse statistics?
We will also be focusing on building skills for reading informational texts. How do we get the
most information out of an informational text that we have not seen before? How do we preview
texts so that, even if there are difficult terms in the paper, we are able to understand the main
argument of what is being discussed? We will be doing all of this and more in this unit.

Survey Taking
This unit will focus on what is involved for taking a survey of the community around us. How do
we read statistics and graphs. How do we determine what is important to focus on? How do we
determine what important questions are? This unit will help introduce us to some of the other
units that we will be studying in this course.

We will be working on creating a short informational text in an area that you are interested in.
Next, you will be presenting your information in a variety of different ways, depending on your
PLP.

Reading - Types of Texts Read
Students read many self-selected and teacher-assigned informational, narrative, and graphic
texts of varying lengths and degrees of challenge on a range of topics, including topics relevant
to the students’ interests and postsecondary destinations.

Reading Skills Demonstrated


Students demonstrate their understanding of texts and their skills in the three key areas in
various ways - for example, throughout written and oral answers to questions, through
discussion and teacher-student conferences, and through written responses to texts.

Reading Strategies Used


Students learn and demonstrate the ability to select and apply a range of reading strategies:
● before reading, to preview texts and build on prior knowledge
● during reading, to monitor comprehension and record ideas
● after reading, to consolidate and extend understanding

Writing Forms Used


Students are required to produce several pieces of writing, on self-selected and
teacher-assigned topics, in each of the four forms. They are also asked to write in other forms
relevant to their personal interests and future destinations.

Writing Skills Demonstrated


Students are required to demonstrate in their writing all of the key skills measured on the test.
They also learn and are expected to demonstrate their use of the writing process (prewriting,
organizing, drafting, revising, editing), which provides a necessary framework for their writing.

exceeded​ the level of literacy required for graduation, and earns an credit for
the course.
50 – 65% Performance that shows ​moderate​ skill in reading and writing. The student has
achieved​ the level of literacy required for graduation, and earns a credit for the
course.

0 – 49% Performance that shows ​limited​ reading and writing skills. The student may be
approaching ​the level of literacy required for graduation but cannot be deemed
to have met the requirement and does not earn a credit for the course.

Summative Assessment: Portfolio 30%

Note: In the assignment pages you will notice that there will be either a TW or a SA next to an
assignment. TW stands for term work (60%) and SA stands for summative assessment (30%).
This course is very specifically designed by the Ontario Ministry of Education. As such, there will
be no Discovery Day project connected to this course. Your summative assessment projects
make up your digital portfolio, and your 30%. If you have any questions please come see me.
