Points regarding our MME courses
• Introductory courses
– To give a feel of/for materials (without going into depth)
– Commonly seen objects (household, domestic & other items)
– Common functional objects (engine components etc.)
– Unseen functional objects
– Specialised objects/components
– Inner structures of materials (Optical, SEM, TEM pictures)
– Should tie up with the ID 1100 course on design
– ID course coordinator to interact with instructor
– Instructor to carefully design the course in order to
maximise the students’ interest/enthusiasm
– General knowledge and fun stuff (esp. in I semester)
– More in the form of games/play
Points regarding our MME Courses
• Basic & fundamental courses as well as courses
concerning application aspects
– Overlap should be reduced
– Some overlap is needed to ensure continuity

• Electives and higher level courses

– Should there be electives only for B.Tech/DD?
– Pros – Can be pitched at a really advanced level
– Cons – Precludes PG students
– Cons – Increases total number of courses to be floated
– Already reasonable number of PG courses available
• Real world & case study courses
– Currently in “Self study” mode
– More needed?

Suggestion of other courses by MME faculty
• Mathematical models and computational techniques in
process metallurgy
– Proposed by Dr. Sabita Sarkar as a core course for B.Tech./DD
– “MT4110 Computational Techniques in Materials Engineering”
is already available as elective for B.Tech./DD (currently
dormant)
– Should this be revived as it is in elective form?
• Has to be allotted a MM number

– Or should it be a core course for B.Tech./DD?

• Reworking of curriculum will be needed
• Alternatively one elective course dropped instead

– Or be proposed as a PG elective?
• Make it possible for M.Tech and Research Scholars to credit the course
• Numbering of course will have to change
Already existing course in the department
MM411 Computational Methods in Materials Engineering
Introduction to computers, numerical methods, minimization techniques, overview of
computational techniques such as FEM, Monte Carlo, and molecular dynamics; use of
computers to solve materials science problems, such as, phase transformations, nucleation
and growth, diffusion and heat transfer.
