Saint Mother Theresa was born with the official name Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on
August 26, 1910 in Skopje to her parents, Nikola and Drane Bojaxhiu. She received her First
Holy Communion and her Confirmation at the ages of 5 and 6. At the age of 8, he father died.
This unfortunate event caused her family to face financial troubles. Throughout her youth,
Mother Theresa was greatly involved with the Jesuit Parish of the Sacred Heart. Because she felt
compelled to pursue a life of missionary work, Mother Theresa left her home in 1928 and joined
the Institute of Blessed Virgin Mary (aka The Sisters of Loreto in Ireland) at 18 years old. She
made her First Profession of Vows in 1931 and then officially designated herself to the Loreto
Entally community in Calcutta while also teaching at Saint Mary’s School for girls. In the year
of 1937, Mother Theresa made her Final Profession of Vows and became the “spouse of Jesus
for all eternity”. Mother Theresa later became the principal at St. Mary’s School and was renown
for her “charity, unselfishness, and courage” as she lived her life for Jesus. On September 10,
1946, she received a message from Jesus; Jesus wanted her to satisfy His great thirst for the love
of others, especially the poor. Jesus also asked her to establish a religious community called the
Missionaries of Charity, that would be dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor. Answering
His call, on August 17, 1948, Mother Theresa entered the world of the poor, abused, and
abandoned in order to love and serve them as Jesus did. Later on, she returned to Calcutta and
with the help of the Little Sisters of the Poor, she continued her missionary and charity work in
the slums. There, she loved, cared for, showed compassion to, and served “the unwanted, the
unloved, and the uncared for.” She was recognized for her amazing work with awards such as the
Indian Padmashri Award and the Nobel Peace Prize while struggling to understand the sense of
separation from God she was feeling at the time. In reality, Mother Theresa was sharing in God’s
great suffering. Mother Theresa died on September 5, 1997 but was beatified by Pope John Paul
II. She was then canonized by Pope Francis while having two miracles attributed to her.
