Christian Message:
1. Bible:
a. Luke 1:26-38
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named
Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and
the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly
favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29 And when she saw him, she
was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30 And
the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou
shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be
great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne
of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom
there shall be no end. 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a
man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and
the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be
born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also
conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. 37 For
with God nothing shall be impossible. 38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it
unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

b. John 1:1
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”

c. Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign;* the young woman, pregnant and about to bear
a son, shall name him Emmanuel.

d. Luke 1:23
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which
means “God is with us.”

2. Church Teachings:
a. Nicene Creed
…For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was
incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man…

b. Catechism of the Catholic Church #461

Taking up St. John's expression, "The Word became flesh", 82 the Church calls "Incarnation" the
fact that the Son of God assumed a human nature in order to accomplish our salvation in it. In a
hymn cited by St. Paul, the Church sings the mystery of the Incarnation:
“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form
of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the
form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled
himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. ”

c. Catechism for Filipino Catholics # 476

Why the Historical Jesus? We proclaim in the Creed that the Son of God came down from heaven
“for us and our salvation.” Scripture like wise declares : “T he Father sent His Son a s Savior of
the world” (1 Jn 4:14). This means first, that God sent His Son as an offering for our sins (cf. 1 Jn
4:10). Second, he came to reveal to us God’s love, that we might have life through him (cf. Jn 3:16).
Third, he came to be our model for sanctity, so that, fourth, we could share in his divine sonship
(cf. 2 Pt 1:4; CCC 456-60).
At Christmas St. Augustine preached: “He who was the Son of God, for you has become the Son of
man, so that you who were children of men, might become the children of God. That he might
give us of his good things, he shared with us our infirmities.”

C. Nourishing the Plant

 Jesus is the Son of God.

 Jesus shows us God’s love.
 Jesus invites people to follow him.
 Jesus’ disciples continue his work.

Throughout the Old Testament we read about God’s plan. Little by little the
plan is revealed in the history of his chosen people and through his prophets and
messengers. And when the right moment came, this plan was revealed in all its
wonderful mystery in the birth, life, passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The plan God had in mind was Jesus Christ. In Jesus, God would reveal himself to us
most fully. In Jesus, we see God made visible, at once truly human and truly divine.

But God did not give up on the plan. When the time was ripe, God sent his Son
to bring it to fulfillment. This is Jesus, the Word made flesh. Jesus spent his life
showing us how to be peace with one another, with creation, and with his Father
and ours. He spent his life teaching love and forgiveness, healing sickness and
division. His resurrection and ascension was his victory over death and sin. Jesus is
our redeemer. Through him we are saved from sin. His sacrifice on the cross and his
victory over sin and death made the Father’s plan of peace and harmony possible for
us and for our world. The paschal mystery is the promise that God’s plan will be
fulfilled.
